The idea was first posed as a blog post here, nearly four years ago.
On Monday, Marist Running Alum Matt Walsh made it a reality: The
Minnewaska Marathon, a run from Marist’s McCann Center to Minnewaska State Park
and Preserve in Ulster County.
Turns out, the run was a bit shy of a marathon (23.1 miles, to be exact). But it was a marathon effort nonetheless. Walsh did
the run solo on a warm and muggy morning, with current Marist junior (and
fellow Wantagh HS alum) Arquimedes DelaCruz providing support (and the photos that accompany this post)
during the second half of the race.
This is one tough run, especially the latter stages with its
relentless climbing up the Shawangunk Ridge. And then, once Walsh arrived at
the park, the run up the park road is straight uphill. Again, relentless.
Walsh made it to the lake in just under 3 hours (2:59). He
proudly wore his Marist Alumni Racing Team singlet. And he did it.
