Ramsey Little’s strong indoor season continued with a 9-second personal-best time at 3km (8:15.69). Ramsey is now the second-fastest individual in school history, trailing only Adam Vess’ stellar 2009 school record of 8:05.81. Other highlights: Patrick Kutch (4:26.74) and Jon Kittredge (4:29.16) with personal-best times in the mile, Ian Wiesinger (9:00.41) with a PR in the 3km, and several 5km bests – John Ignacz (15:29.17), Daniel Czop (15:35.63) and Jeremy Mbogo (15:39.13). Much like with the women, we’ll fill in the splits at a later time.

MAAC Indoor Championships: Men's results and splits

Great finish to an exciting weekend at the MAAC meet. The men showed great resilience in overcoming the loss to injury of star sprinter Glenmour Leonard-Osbourne and got sixth place overall, which was neat. Ramsey Little completed one of the greatest distance doubles in school history. A day after his third-place finish in the 5km, he placed fourth in the 3km with a PR time of 8:24.78.

Easton Eberwein had the other stellar individual performance, storming to a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.16 seconds. Jeremy Mooney was another individual point scorer, placing sixth in the 200-meter dash in 22.20 seconds.

However, what’s more exciting that relay races? The men capped the weekend with two doozies. The 4x800 medaled with a third-place time of 7:45.14, an IC4A qualifier. The 4x400 placed fourth in 3:24.34. The star was Roshan Kalikasingh, who anchored the 4x400 with the fastest split (50.137) – on no rest, coming right after the 4x800.

In addition, Aidan Pech completed a strong double with a monster PR in the 3km (8:44.17), a day after his breakthrough performance in the mile on Saturday night. Fun stuff all around!

MAAC Indoor Championships, Day 1: Men's results

A strong first day for the men, highlighted by Ramsey Little’s gutsy third-place finish in the 5,000-meter run, the DMR getting an IC4A qualifying mark and placing fourth, and three individual qualifiers for Sunday’s finals – Jeremy Mooney in both the 60 dash and 200 dash, and Easton Eberwein in the 400 dash. Glenmour Leonard-Osbourne was a scratch in the 60 due to injury. Jeremy filled the void in a great, big way, showing his outstanding leadership.

Other highlights included:

--Sophomore Aidan Pech, with a five-second personal-best time in the mile run (4:20.58).
--Junior Patrick Kutch, with a 10-second personal-best time in the 5,000-meter run (15:14.00).
--Freshman Reed Dexter, with a personal-best time in the 400-meter dash (51.80).
--Freshmen Tyler Perry (1:58.20) and Thomas Dinsmore (1:58.30), with personal-best marks in the 800-meter run.

Our field event athletes didn’t have their best day, but we’re proud of them for competing hard. Will update with splits from all races after Sunday’s finals.

Where we are ...

Where we are, I don’t know where we are, but it will be OK

I always had a peripheral awareness of The Lumineers, an indie-rock band with a distinct, unique sound. Thanks to my loyal listenership to Radio Woodstock (WDST-100.1 FM), I am exposed to such music by newer, “modern” artists. Many current (and perhaps former) athletes might assume that, as a late-50s guy, I only listen to “older” music like classic rock and the like. That would be highly inaccurate! I’ve gotten into numerous newer bands over the past several decades, and my go-to staples are current acts that may have been around for a while but also crank out new music as well; no nostalgia acts for me. The Lumineers was never one of them. Again, I was aware of them, and their quirky songs (“Ho Hey” is more of an anthem and chant than a traditional song). But sometimes, it takes awhile for things to click. Newsflash: I really like The Lumineers now!

Again, I can thank Radio Woodstock for this. And my daughter Natalie. First, Gattine, the morning show host on Radio Woodstock. Gattine did a great interview with The Lumineers front man, Wesley Schultz, a few weeks ago, interspersing the conversation with songs from their new album, Bright Side, which dropped (that’s modern lingo for “released”) recently. The interview was interesting, insightful. The songs were catching and … just plain GOOD.

Back to peripheral awareness. On some of our long car rides to swim practices, Natalie would have a few Lumineers songs on her various playlists. I always liked them, in the context of her playlists that included music I was either unfamiliar with or not all that into. So yeah. Peripheral awareness has now turned into front-and-center fascination with this band. I’ve been sampling their vast catalog, via Spotify (again, another thing I’m late to the party on) during my Loser Laps in McCann. Great stuff! A few weeks ago, on a quick visit to see Natalie in the Albany area, she does what she usually does: Reaches for the aux cord, unplugs my boring podcasts and audiobooks, and plugs in her phone and her music. She had a surprise for me. The new Lumineers release. We bonded over the new songs, the awesome record that I currently cannot get enough of. It’s a rare moment when a 57-year-old dad and 19-year-old daughter can unanimously and enthusiastically agree on tunes in the car. Among the songs that I cannot get out of my head from this release is a unique (and, yes, quirky) tune called “Where We Are.” Schultz described in detail the origins of the song, about a horrific car crash from which he and his girlfriend amazingly walked away without serious injury. The lyrics, at the beginning and at the end of this blog post, keep rattling around in my head. Good stuff. Check it out.

Back on track

Here it is, February 15 … and track practice was at the Vassar College track today! This is a major victory, brought to you in part by the Captain of the Visiting Team, none other than Terry Horton (thanks to freshman Jared Tomasetti for these pictures). With the blessing of the grounds guys at Vassar, along with XC coach James McCowan, Terry spent several hours on Monday and Tuesday at the Vassar track, shovel in hand, clearing out a thin layer of snow and ice. The result? Several of our women’s athletes were able to complete their workout on the track today. It was cold and breezy – real feel still in the 20s. For a large chunk of our team, being on an outdoor track is preferred over an indoor track or a treadmill. So, that’s GOOD. We’ll be back again tomorrow, and the next day, and the day after that, as the temperature is slated to creep up into the relatively balmy 50s in the coming days. We’ll take it. Are we over with winter? Mentally, yes. Is winter over with us? Probably not. But for now, our team was able to run some hard laps on our home away from home, thanks in large part to the brains and brawn of a dedicated 73-year-old coach. Highly neat!

BU Valentine: Men's results and splits

It was a long, late journey (van pulled into driveway at 3a this morning) at the Valentine Invitational, which never fails to thrill. In case you missed it, Grant Fisher from Nike Bowerman TC ran an insanely fast 12:53.73 in the elite, seeding 5km – the fastest indoor time in USA history and fourth fastest indoor time all-time. Two other men (Moh Ahmed, 12:56.87 and Marc Scott, 12:57.08) broke 13 minutes as well. As usual, the Track and Tennis Center was ROCKING with energy. Think back to a year ago (I know, I know, I say that all the time!) and you appreciate such a scene even more. Also appreciated? The many strong performances from the men’s team, which are detailed below. Our final racer of the night, Ramsey Little, is now third all-time at 5km with a gutty effort in a very physical race. He’s getting closer. We’re all getting closer. On to MAACs next weekend …

BU Valentine: Sub-15 list grows!

Early highlight – and I mean EARLY … the unseeded 5km was at 9a! -- from the men’s portion of the Valentine Invitational here at BU: Freshman Gabe Rodriguez lowered his personal-best time in the 5km by 12 seconds (en route, his 3km split was seven seconds faster than his previous 3km PR, which is pretty remarkable, too!) and joined the elite list of Marist College men who have run sub-15:00 for 5km. Gabe (14:54.26) is 22nd on the list of 31 names (see list below), and his collegiate track career is just starting. Neat! As strong as Gabe ran, we believe he has more in him, especially over the final kilometer. For now, he can celebrate joining this sub-15 list. In the same event, senior Patrick Kutch lowered his PR by several seconds in a gutty effort, down to 15:25.06. A great start to the day, which is still ongoing here at the Track and Tennis Center …

BU Valentine: Women's results and splits

Long day in Boston #1 is in the books. An even longer day tomorrow awaits. Friday’s highlights: Another school record for grad student Jessica Ippolito in the pole vault; personal-best times from Adele Alexander (mile) and Ellie Davis (5km) and another ECAC qualifying mark from Hayley Collins in the 5km. We will be running a women’s DMR tomorrow, sandwiched around a lot of competition before and after that. Please be patient with results and updates, as I will be driving a van back to Poughkeepsie very late on Saturday night/early Sunday morning and obviously won’t be able to update the blog. Side note: Most of that snow from two weeks ago has melted away up here! Great to be back in Boston. OK.
