Racewalkers excel at USATF indoors

Once again, our racewalkers (and, of course, Coach Chuck!) represented Marist well at (yet another) national championship meet. Marissa had a steady and strong effort, while Kyra was battling a cold all week, which hampered her. “The altitude was rough for everyone,’’ Coach Chuck wrote in a text. “The track is very banked too so not the best for racewalk.” Speaking of altitude! Chuck had an incredible hike on Thursday, reaching snow-capped peaks at more than 10,000 feet of altitude. Neat.

Here's some more details from Chuck: "They represented this team with such grace and determination on a tough track for the walk with altitude!!!! The banks are terrible for Race Walk."

Not quite magical on the Magic Carpet today, but still some strong performances. Personal-best times from Gabe in 3km, Raffi in 1km, Ferreri in 800m, Lee in 400m and a strong double from Easton in the 400/4x400 relay. Next week = meet at Cornell, then MAACs, then IC4As. The road never ends ...

Spencer's Olympic trials: Details + splits

Spencer’s pre-race gameplan was to stay in control in the first half of the race, going through the half-marathon split in around 1:09, and then aim to run the second half stronger and faster. He felt he was in PR shape and that’s always the goal, but he was cognizant that weather conditions probably wouldn’t be favorable for a personal-best time for most if not all the competitors. As a result, his secondary goal was sub-2:20, a threshold he only cracked once – at his trials qualifying marathon (CIM) back in 2022.

His early race pace was fast! He looked good and felt good, and the weather conditions were still favorable enough for this fast pace. It was sunny (duh, Florida) but not that warm yet – mid-60s, still not favorable for a marathon but not terrible either, with a relatively low dewpoint in the mid-40s. Spencer got to the half marathon in 1:08:11, and we who were tracking him on our phones immediately noticed his pace slowing (5:23 split in mile 13 was an “oh dang” moment).

But Spencer knew what he was doing out there. He told us after the race that he deliberately backed off, knowing it would get warmer (gosh, it did, as temperatures went in the lower 70s … again, standard issue Orlando weather in February) and knowing he wanted to attack the later miles. And attack he did!

Spencer had a really good stretch of fast running from miles 16-19, with a sizzling 5:04 in mile 17 – his fastest mile of the race! By that point, the majority of the field was fading in the heat – in some cases, from our vantage point, staggeringly so. While Spencer had a predictable slowdown over the final 10km, he reported that he was passing runners in droves and that gave him confidence. He even had a strong finishing kick!

In case you haven’t figured it out by now? Overall, this was a great race for Spencer. He’s probably in the best shape of his life and he’s looking to cash in these chips with some fast outdoor track racing during the spring season in California, before returning to the marathon in the fall, where he plans to run in the NYC Marathon (that will be neat!).

Spencer had had a fantastic post-collegiate running career. At age 28, we believe he has many more fast miles remaining in him, and we are excited to see what more he can accomplish. For now, we can all celebrate a fantastic Olympic Trials marathon experience. Neat.

Spencer's Olympic trials: A great race, a great day

Below is my Substack post about the race. Shameless plug = please consider subscribing to this at petecolaizzo.substack.com. Thank you.

Spencer’s story
A day at the Olympic Trials marathon
The results say that Spencer Bossi-Johnson, 28, from San Diego, placed 42nd in 2:18:15 (5:17 per mile) at the United States Olympic Team Trials marathon on a sunny Saturday morning in Orlando. It was his second-fastest marathon time and his only other sub-2:20 performance after his trials qualifying time of 2:17:15 at California International Marathon in 2022.

Those are the numbers.

The story is so much better than an already amazing race.

We love Spencer.

Anyone who has spent more than 10 minutes with Spencer loves Spencer.

And that love was so very evident on Saturday in Orlando. Between family, former Marist College teammates and friends, “Team Spencer” was a cheering force. We were located at a strategic spot, selected carefully by Spencer’s wife Lauren, about 400 meters from the finish line.

We were able to see Spencer four times at that spot. Each and every time, he acknowledged us like WE were the stars of the show. When, of course, it was our “little running engine that could” who was our star – today and always.

The truth of the matter is, it didn’t matter how well Spencer would have done. We all would have loved him just the same, and he knows that. That was the coolest thing about being at the Olympic Marathon trials.

The fact that Spencer crushed it, the fact that he followed his race plan to perfection, the fact that he moved up steadily through the field and finished ahead of so many runners with faster times entering the race … that’s all gravy. Spencer has touched us all with his gentle demeanor, his kindness, his loyalty to everyone in his life.

When he went past us for the first time, around the 2-mile mark, several of us in Team Spencer – his mom, his mother-in-law, his high school coach, his college coach -- succumbed to tears. Tears of joy. Tears of awe. We shared hugs of amazement. Our little guy, the ultimate underdog story, made it to the big stage. And he was savoring every minute of it.

And so were we.
