Spots of time

Below is an open letter that I will share with alumni and friends who will gather on Friday and Saturday to mourn one of our own, Eric Bergmann (Class of 1997), who lost his battle to melanoma last week at the too-soon age of 45. I share it here for many blog readers who may not have known our friend and brother. There have been many heartfelt Facebook posts remembering Eric. This is my way. Please pray for peace and comfort for Eric’s family, especially his three young children, at this time. Thank you.

To the members of the Marist Cross Country and Track Family:

The loss of our dear friend and teammate Eric Bergmann (proud Class of 1997) has been very difficult for us all to process. For those of you who were his former teammates, the thought of facing your mortality just as you are growing accustomed to the vulnerability of middle age (your 40s), is troubling and haunting. You know its more difficult to do what you used to do, but you assume you’ve got time to sort it all out. Time. Yeah. That. We’re guaranteed nothing. We are all day to day, my friends.

Life’s not fair! Eric is a guy who by all accounts took care of himself. He never stopped running and he added triathlon to his regimen in adulthood. He reveled in the fact that his oldest son, Ethan, took to the sport as he did. There is a special joy in seeing your own child garner some of the satisfaction we had as beginners all those years ago. Even after melanoma took hold, when Eric’s body allowed, he repurposed himself, had a comeback tri race last spring with the very appropriate F*ck Cancer racing shirt. But as too often happens, cancer comes roaring back and wins.

But you know what? F*ck THAT! Cancer doesn’t win. We win. In this time of great sadness, we win because of the enduring kinship and love we feel for each other in the Marist Cross Country and Track Family. Months and sometimes years go by between times that we communicate. Maybe a PM on Facebook to wish someone happy birthday. A random text. A visit to campus or elsewhere. A chance meeting in the city. Some remain connected to the sport as coaches, parents of runners (like Eric), maybe even an occasional race for ourselves here and there. But always, in the back of our minds and in the front of our hearts, we are all Forever Foxes. We all share the bond, the camaraderie, the kinship, the family vibe that was forged years ago. By me, by Phil, by Chuck, by Terry, on van rides, bus rides, in the parks and tracks and trails of the mid-Hudson Valley that we have to call home because Marist doesn’t give us one -- peeing behind a tree, high-fiving some old guy on the rail trail, thanking the grounds guy at Vassar for unlocking the gate to the track for us, getting yelled at by the National Park Service for running shirtless or parking illegally, being hounded by some deranged lunatic on the Farm Lane trail on an otherwise beautiful fall day, getting our marking cones stolen by some losers on the trail, remembering to bring bridge toll money for the vans, hills and more hills at Bowdoin Park, intervals on that piece of crap track in McCann that we sorely miss now, lifting weights in an old racquetball court or now in a party tent, the Red Baron, grocery store stops on the way to meets, K&D Deli box lunches … I could go on and on with this run-on sentence. You men and women, you get it. You loved it. You love Eric. You love each other. And we love you right back. I haven’t gotten wealthy in my 28 years as coach at Marist, far from it! But I’ve been blessed the riches of your love and friendship, from Eric as much as any of the hundreds of athletes who have come through our team, our program, our family, during that time. We will mourn him, we will miss him, we will remember him.

These are my words. They are all I’ve got, inadequate as they may be. Here, then, I share with you some powerful song lyrics – a beautiful poem, really -- from my favorite musician, Warren Haynes. After proud and loyal alum Ned Kenyon – the glue that holds us all together in this -- called me early on a Saturday morning a few weeks ago, with the news of the cancer ferociously overtaking Eric, this was the first song that popped up on the iPod mix in my car. Spots of Time. When I hear the song and read the lyrics, I think of him, I think of all of you. I never stop thinking about all of you.

With love,
Coach Pete Colaizzo

Spots of Time, by Warren Haynes

Spots of time flash before my eyes
Like ribbons of light
Helplessly I try to touch them
Before they disappear into the night

Running fearlessly as in a dream
Headlong into the wind
Cool night air, blowing through our hair
Moonlight dancing on your skin

Do you remember
How young we were or is it just me
Imagining like I always do
When we were once wild and free

Young man yearning for days gone by
Innocence once removed
Familiar feeling of a front porch swing
And a song, always soothes

Spots of time like windows appear
You can look out or in
But you can't get to the future I regret
By going through the past, my friend

Do you remember
How young we were or is it just me
Imagining like I always do
That we were once wild and free

A mother's tears, a sparrow's wing
A lover's eyes softly glistening
Memories that to me are everything
But to others maybe only ashes and dust

Do you remember
How young we were or is it just me
Imagining like I always do
When we were once wild and free

BU Last Chance: Men's results and splits

Drew Burns had another great 800 but fell just short of the school record once again. James Moehringer ran a maddeningly neg-split mile (2:13/2:06!) in a heat that never seemed to get rolling. Same for Chris Tibbetts in the 1,000. The night ended with Dan Hillman notching a 5km PR in his last collegiate indoor race.

MAAC Indoor images, part 2

MAAC Championships in all our sports – cross country, indoor track, outdoor track – are emotionally charged events usually tinged with a bit of finality for the seniors in our program. With one more MAAC Championship to go, outdoors at Monmouth in a few months, the series of goodbyes that comes with senior year in college has already started, and the MAAC indoor meet this past weekend was one of them. These two images – the first a collage – do a decent job of expressing the emotions and the long journey of our sport. The collage is of three seniors – Brian Henderson, Tanner Senius, Drew Burns – good friends, housemates, captains, middle distance brothers, taken each year at the MAAC Championships at the Armory. Freshman, sophomore, junior, senior. Pretty cool. The second one is of those three guys and fellow senior captains Shea Bohan and Jordan Casey. Jordan texted it to me with the note: “The squad has just one more MAACs … time goes too fast.” Amen, sister. We have a few more months together, seniors. Let’s savor every practice, every meet, every van and bus ride. It’s been a good ride, with a few more chapters to write.

MAAC Indoor images, part 1

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to those who know me, but I’m not a big fan of over-the-top celebrations in sports – stylin’ … or whatever other names that can be attached to such behavior. At the end of our thrilling men’s DMR victory at the MAAC Indoor Championships the other night, anchor leg James Moehringer let his emotions take over and he celebrated the extremely rare victory for our men’s program. Normally, this would be frowned upon. But if you know Moe like we do, you know that there was zero showboat and 100 percent pure joy in his reaction. Coaches from other MAAC schools went out of their way to say how cool they thought the victory was. We agreed! Again, we don’t condone the kind of showboating you see in the NFL and other professional sports. Moe’s was different, entirely appropriate, and pretty awesome to see. This photo was posted on armorytrack.com and we are proud to display it here.

MAAC Indoor Championships: Day 2, men's results

The 800-meter race was a bruising affair, with Zeng getting tangled up in the final lap with another racer and that impeded his progress. Drew Burns had a strong sprint to the final and earned a top-3 medal. Our 3km guys battled well and ran some fast times, and that was gratifying to see. And the 4x800 relay was a down-to-the-wire thriller as well. On to the rest of championship season!

MAAC Indoor Championships: Day 2, women's results

A solid final day of competition at MAACs. The mile race was reminiscent of the 1,000 at the BU Valentine meet, with three ECAC qualifiers in the same race and one of the most memorable individual events in school history. It's a testament to how fast and competitive the league is when all three ladies were in the bottom half of the 10-person final. Wow! Great return to the track after injury for Jordan Casey, who got an assist from teammate Maria Smith, who set the pace for the first half of the race before stepping off the track. The championship season has started strong and we look to continue it in the next two weeks at Boston University.

MAAC Indoor Championships: Men's results, day 1 (DMR wins!)

We saved the best for last as the DMR team of Christopher Tibbetts, Josh Hindle, Brian Henderson and James Moehringer brought home first place and an IC4A qualifying mark. Moe, in particular, had a scintillating anchor leg, storming from third place to the victory in the last two laps. Very cool. In the open 800, Drew Burns had a high-wire act of a preliminary race but did enough to get the automatic qualifier by getting second place in his heat (and adding about 100 gray hairs to his coach's beard). Freshman Brendan Zeng continues to impress, as he too stormed into the finals with a second-place finish in his heat. Our sprinters had another solid day, and our 5km guys battled in a typically bruising, back-and-forth race in the steamy Armory. On Sunday, we look forward to our Drew and Zeng in the 800, the 3km race and both relays. For now, tonight, we savor a fair MAAC victory.

For a Friar

They were among the first friends I made when I arrived on the Marist College campus in August of 1982, a scared and skinny 115-pound distance kid from New Jersey. They talked in reverent tones about guys like Gregorek and Centrowitz and Petersen, names that meant nothing to me at the time, as a relative newbie to the sport of distance running. They would become lifelong friends. And then, when I started coaching here in 1991, before long my roster was littered with them, young men (and later, women) who carried the same proud high school tradition as my teammates from the mid-1980s. You can still find many of them on our current roster, and now there are parents as well, and of course an ever-growing legion of proud Forever Fox alums. The bond is strong, and it predates even my time as an athlete at Marist. I’m referring, of course, to the indelible, unique and special connection between the running programs at St. Anthony’s High School on Long Island and Marist College in Poughkeepsie.

Once Tim Dearie, a St. Anthony’s and Marist alum, became coach of the Friars many years ago, that bond and connection became even stronger, if that is possible. And then our good friend and teammate Ken Bohan, also a St. Anthony’s and Marist alum, started coaching the young Friars. This, of course, gave us very valid excuses to go visit the Friars whenever they would make their annual treks to Bowdoin Park for the Federation or other cross country meets. We’d see Tim, Bo, Brother Antonio and whatever iteration of the black singlets were there that year. Almost always, we would be recruiting one or more of the Friars. Because, well, that’s what we do here at Marist. And oh yeah, their teams are ALWAYS good.

During the last several years, we got to know another member of the Friar Family, a coach who always seem to have a smile on his face. Without fail, Bob Higgins would greet me warmly and by name. We had a running joke about who had the most out-of-date phone. For a quite a while, it was a good contest – me with my absurd flip phone, he with his ridiculous slider phone. Eventually, I “graduated” to a smart phone, but his ascension to 21st century technology took a bit longer (he did, eventually, get a smart phone!). I would bust his chops good naturedly because he would be wearing a Harvard sweatshirt instead of a Marist sweatshirt – as though pride in being an alum of one of the best colleges in the world were a bad thing! I’ll admit that I never really got to know Coach Higgins that well, other than these brief encounters at cross country and track meets. He was just another friendly face in a sea of friendly Friar faces.

As of last month, he could still be spotted at track practice, cracking corny jokes (my kinda guy!) and inspiring his athletes in his low-key, unassuming way. Then I heard from Bo and Tim that something was wrong, maybe a cyst needed to removed in his head. It sounded concerning. It turned out to be far, far worse, an inoperable brain tumor. And on Monday, Coach Higgins – a proud Friar athlete, alum and coach -- was gone, way too soon at 57. I tell my athletes all the time, “hey guys, we’re all day to day.” They think I’m joking. We’re not. Bo filled in some blanks about Higgins for me last week at BU. Higgins was a great member of some of the greatest St. Anthony’s track relays back in the late 1970s. They did everything together back then. Higgins went to Harvard, had a successful career, came back to the island to coach at his alma mater, where he inspired so many Friars – including many current Red Foxes and recently graduated Forever Foxes. Tim and Bo and Higgins, reunited after all these years, doing something they loved at a place they most definitely loved. And now he’s gone. Poof. Like that. I’ve read a few social media tributes to Coach Higgins. His athletes adored him. They were inspired by him. They put up with his trademark -- horrendously corny jokes. One of our current athletes texted me: “He inspired me to be a better runner and to work hard on and off the track.” If that doesn’t encapsulate everything we as coaches want out of our runners, I don’t know what does. Life ain’t fair.

Rest in peace, Coach Higgins. Long may you run.

Busy (and successful) racewalk weekend

Quite an amazing weekend for our growing racewalk family! Saturday at the Millrose Games, senior Katie Miale walked a mile personal-best of 7:15.07 and got fifth place. She was followed closely by new teammate Kayla Shapiro, who PRed in 7:16.95. Both times easily qualified both for the USATF Indoor Championships in two weeks (Sunday, Feb. 24) at Ocean Breeze. Lauren Harris was on a blistering pace but was DQed because of a form violation (common in racewalking). No worries! With the help of her loyal teammate Katie, she qualified at a meet on Sunday morning at Ocean Breeze, were both walked PR times for 3km (14:03.64 for Lauren; 14:28.33 for Katie … both easily exceeding the USATF standard of 14:40). So! We’ll have three Marist racewalkers competing at USATF Indoors! Kayla may not be in a Marist singlet, because as a transfer she still may not be cleared to compete for Marist (she is eligible for practice). No worries, she’s part of the family … the growing family of Marist racewalkers. We are proud of them all – past, present and future. Very neat!

BU Valentine: Men's results and splits

It was a day filled with so many personal-best style highlights that it is my sincere hope that we don’t forget any here. Start with senior captain Drew Burns, who put in a dominant effort in the 800-meter run, clocking the second-fastest time in school history and qualifying for the IC4A Championships by winning his heat in 1:52.43 – just shy of David Marthy’s 2014 record of 1:52.18. He later came back in the 4x400 relay with a split of 50.012 (by the way, our 4x400 team ran very fast as well, see splits below!). Other highlights:

--Staying in the 800, freshman Brendan Zeng knocked off two seconds from his previous best and clocked a 1:56.60 (Drew and Zeng are pictured here). Also, Aidan Sweeney ran a personal-best time.
--Senior captain Michael Kennedy lopped 25 seconds off his previous personal-best in the 3,000-meter run, clocking a strong time of 8:41.30. Also in the 3km, James Draney (8:47.01) and Elias Platanias (8:58.17) stormed to personal-best times.
--The sprint crew had a stellar day. Freshman Jeremy Mooney continued to nudge down his dash times – 60 dash to 7.32 and 200 dash to 22.83 (first sub-23.00). Not bad for a kid in his first season on the track … ever.
--Fan favorite Santosh Krishnan broke 52.00 for the first time in the 400-meter dash (51.90) and then backed it up with a 52.125 split to lead off the B relay team. Also in the 400, Jon Green and Pat Beglane notched season/personal bests.
--In the 1,000, Christopher Tibbetts ran a personal-best time of 2:28.83, narrowly missing the IC4A mark of 2:28.50. Dang.
--In the mile, senior Dan Hillman knocked off nearly seven seconds from his previous best. Also in the mile, freshmen Brad Rynkowski and Sam Goldzweig knocked out personal-best times.

So yeah. A pretty darn good day and night. (A note on splits: In most cases, I used the camera splits that the timing company provided, so it may seem more detailed while also omitting some laps)

Bu Valentine: Women's DMR

Our long day here at the Track and Tennis Center started quite well, as our women’s DMR improved their earlier ECAC qualifying mark by nearly eight seconds! Denise Grohn, Shea Bohan and Maria Smith came back on a double with strong performances, while 400-meter leg Debbie Boerke made the trip to Boston after student teaching on Friday and had her usual great split. Good stuff, all around. Looking forward to lowering this time even more over the coming weeks. Neat!

BU Valentine: Women's results and splits

Long day and evening at the Track and Tennis Center, but always well worth it. The aforementioned 1,000-meter race was the biggest highlight of the day. We're back at it early with the women's DMR, followed by a full day and evening of men's racing. Will update with women's splits soon.
