Recapping Yale: The beginning of the end

Today's meet at Yale was a study in contrasts. After a sweltering few days at Penn Relays (and really, almost everywhere in the Northeast, where the delightful warmth was welcome), Sunday's weather at Yale was cloudy, windy and brisk. "Out like a lamb" ... not so much. It wasn't terrible, but it certainly wasn't pleasant either. Despite this, there were enough positive efforts and performances to make this a worthwhile endeavor at the end of a long and busy week of travel for many of us. The persistent breezes out of the southeast made achieving excellent times a difficult task for sure -- the meet officials turned the sprint races around because of it -- but there were still some good late-season efforts for us across all disciplines -- sprints, hurdles, middle and long distance.

And now we round the corner toward the end of the season, and the beginning of many endings for our graduating seniors. I tend to make an immature habit/joke out of it ... "this is the last (fill in the blank) of your college career" ... I will repeatedly remind the usually annoyed senior class. This, of course, is my goofy mechanism for coping with the fact that we are losing yet another group of wonderful seniors to graduation and the real world. While we are proud of their many accomplishments, for those of us who stay behind and watch this cycle repeat itself year after year, it is an annual source of melancholy for sure. The beginning of the end starts with our final week of "regular season" activities -- practices and meets -- before final exam week. The beginning of the end has a formal beginning to it on Monday night with the senior awards banquet. The fancy awards banquet program is a reminder of the many wonderful men and women who have preceded their wonderful men and women -- stretching back to the prehistoric era when some dude named "Marty McGowan" from the track team won the sportsperson of the year award, the first year it was awarded. More than 40 years later, we get ready to honor another group, and start the clock on the beginning of the end of another great four-year run.

Penn Relays: Men's 4x800 relay team shines

What a great way to cap an eventful weekend for our program at Penn Relays. The men’s 4x800 relay team placed 11th out of 27 teams in the college men’s 3,200-meter relay. Their time of 7:37.62 basically matched the school-record run from two weeks ago at Bucknell (7:37.37) with the identical relay order. The guys raced great, start to finish, and we are proud of how they represented the program on the big stage at Penn. Very, very neat!

Penn Relays: Racewalker Kristi Licursi goes out in style

Senior Kristi Licursi completed her Marist career in fine style, with a career-best time at Penn Relays. Competing in the Olympic development 5km racewalk – actually, all the women’s racewalkers started together in a large field of more than 20 athletes – she surged to her best time of 26:31.20. Kristi has truly been a trailblazer for our program, and she has paved the way for current and future racewalk success. Although the NCAA does not support racewalk as a sport or an event, we are proud to have Marist students wear our singlet in races. Kristi was the first women’s racewalker to do so, and the future here is bright in this niche sport within track and field. Nicely done, Kristi, and thanks for all you have done for our program.

Fun at FoxFest

We take a brief break in the Penn Relays programming to bring you this goofy photo of freshmen Alex Hogue and Will Esposito from Friday afternoon's FoxFest at Marist. As Wilson noted in his text, FoxFest is the PG-13 version of RiverFest. (And, this time of year in our program, PG-13 versions of anything are about all we can tolerate). So yeah. A little fun interlude before it's back to work for these two fine young men at Yale on Sunday. But first! We have some more work to do down here at Penn. OK!

Penn Relays: Heat wave

Let's see. I've been coming to the Penn Relays as a track fan and/or track coach for more than 30 years. For the past 20 years, I've been to the Thursday Distance Night at Penn. Let me think about the last time I wore short sleeves on Thursday night at Penn. Wait. Oh. Yeah. How about ... NEVER! Until this year ... apparently, global warming has come to Penn. Usually, coaches and athletes are scurrying for cover because of the cold rain. This year, it's to get out of the blazing sun. Huh? And the forecast for tomorrow calls for near record heat, and possibly thunderstorms. I thought this was April?

Penn Relays: Women's distance night results

Fifth-year senior Nicki Nesi ran a PR time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, falling just 0.02 short of Brittany Burns’ school record in the event, in a solid effort on Thursday night at Penn. She finished with a hard and strong final lap, but some of the middle laps were just a little off what we were hoping. Later in the evening, Elizabeth Wasserman struggled in the 10km with a tight and stiff back that hampered her ability to run a full and complete pace and effort. This was a bummer. However! All was not lost, as we had two Marist Running Alums – recent graduate Lizzy Peper and soon-to-be UPenn grad Kyle Heubner – visit and hang out with us during the meet. Great to see them both. Once a Fox, always a Fox.

Penn Relays: Men's result and splits

It was a gutty but ultimately disappointing race for Steven Rizzo in the 5,000 at Penn Relays on Thursday night. Gutty in that he looked and raced strong through the first 3,200-meters. Disappointing in that the pace fell off dramatically over the last third of the race. There are no excuses for this, but Rizz has been working very hard academically and has been getting inconsistent sleep. Again, it was a good effort with a not-so-good result. On to the next.

Penn Relays: School record, ECAC qualifier!

The early results from Penn Relays were outstanding: Our women's 4x100 relay set a school record, and Debbie Boerke earned an ECAC qualifying mark in the 400-meter hurdles. Debbie's hurdle race was the first of the day, at 10 a.m., and she got the ECAC mark by the narrowest of margins -- 0.01 second. The 4x100 relay was this afternoon and they edged the previous, 3-year-old school record. Next up is the 4x400 relay and the distance events. Good start to our 3-day stay at Penn.

Shattering start to a new age group

Our old friend, Marist Running Alum and loyal program supporter Bob Sweeney of Colorado had a smashing debut as a 50-year-old at Sunday’s Glass City Marathon in Toledo, Ohio. Bob, who turned 50 in February, placed sixth overall out of more than 1,000 runners in the race and first in the masters (40-and-over) with a sterling time of 2:43:24. The master of consistency, Bob’s 13.1-mile splits were 1:21:32 and 1:21:52. Not bad at any age, but certainly stellar at a new milestone year. For true numbers geeks, Bob’s “age-graded time and achievement percentile” calculated at 2:29:11 and 86.012 percent, according to this web site. In other words, it’s an elite-level performance from an endurance athlete with a career filled with them. Nicely done, Bob!

Farm Lane therapy

Finally, mercifully, daylight has crept back into our early morning jog time. The headlamp you see pictured here has been officially retired from the morning run until the fall, when darkness inevitably creeps back in. This morning, with The Lawyer and The Mayor, our route took an impromptu turn onto Farm Lane – something we haven’t done since last spring or summer. The undulating terrain of our favorite cross country workout venue was an excellent metaphor for our rambling conversation, which I kind of dominated this morning, detailing the ups and downs of our lives these days. The run was great therapy for me and really for the three of us, as we unpacked various emotions that can only be shared on the solitude of an early-morning jog. The stats today were unremarkable: 7 miles, 8:42 pace, on those hills. In a previous life, this would be a slow jog. Two years ago, on crutches, I could only dream of such things. Now, I cherish every step and every word, at any pace and any distance. And it sure is nice to see my friends again in the daylight, as opposed to the blinding light of a powerful headlamp on a dark morning.

Stony Brook Wolfie meet: Women's results, splits -- Ashley Haynes, 100 dash record!

Congrats to senior captain Ashley Haynes, as she continues to leave her mark on the school record board. Today, she added the 100-meter dash to her ever-growing collection of school records, on a damp and chilly day. Nicely done, Ash! (Note: Photo above is from last year's Wolfie, on a much nicer day weather-wise)

Stony Brook Wolfie meet: Chilly selfie

Yeah. The "accu" part of Accuweather wasn't that effective today. All week, we had been checking the Stony Brook weather. All week, it was saying partly cloudy, or partly sunny, or cloudy, with consistent highs in the low to mid 60s. This morning that forecast changed to showers and low 50s. It wasn't all that pleasant, but the meet went well enough. Especially gratifying to see Marist Running Alum Mark Valentino, who came and ran the steeplechase and helped out tremendously with splits throughout the day. Just like old times. Results and splits will be posted here, once they are posted online. Still awaiting them. Some solid performances, despite the chilly, damp and windy conditions. Back with more later ...

Stony Brook Wolfie meet: 'Food' for thought to start the day ...

Our track trips almost always start with a grocery store stop -- either at Hannaford's in Highland or at Price Chopper in Poughkeepsie (which is where we went today, en route to Stony Brook). I was somewhat startled to see senior captain Ashley Haynes in this little shopping buggy at the Chopper. My immediate reaction was, "oh no, she's hurt!" but that quickly changed to "come on, Ash ... really?" But then my thought process shifted to, "well, geez, she's saving her energy for the meet today!" Yeah. That sounds good. Let's go with THAT. Being the quick thinker that I am, I snapped this photo and promised to post it to the blog. So. Here you go!

Stony Brook Wolfie meet: Order of events

On Saturday, we head to Long Island for the Wolfie Invitational at Stony Brook University. This a nice, low-key meet with some quality events and athletes; an excellent meet for us, and even better in that a lot of our athletes are from Long Island, so there is usually great family support. Boston Marathon: Some more Forever Foxes' stats

A few more stats on Katie Messina and Kara Lightowler from Boston (along with an additional finisher's information):

-- Katie finished in 3:03:18, an average of exactly 7:00 per mile. She placed 126th overall in the women's field, and she was 110th overall in the women's open race (18-39). That, my friends, is borderline elite status. Nicely done, Katie!

-- Kara finished in 3:09:42, an average of 7:15 per mile. She placed 256th overall in the women's field, and she was 225th overall in the women's open race (18-39). Good stuff!

-- Jillian Corley completed the marathon in 3:43:47, an average of 8:32 per mile. She slowed down a bit over the second half, but ran an excellent first Boston.

We are proud of them all, as always.

If there are any other Marist Running results from Boston that I missed, please let me know. The photo to the left of Katie was poached from Facebook. Clearly, she was basking in the glory of her new hometown marathon.

Boston Marathon: Bryn's dad = THE MAN

Congratulations to Joe Gorberg, father of soon to be graduating senior Bryn Gorberg (side note: typing those words are tinged with sadness), for his outstanding race at the Boston Marathon.

Despite the warmer than normal conditions, Joe was able to get to his pre-race goals with an outstanding time of 3:20:27, a nearly even-paced race (first half was run in 1:39:11). Joe averaged 7:39 per mile and placed 250th in the 50-54 age group.

As parents, we want to be role models for our children. What better way to be a role model for a student-athlete than by putting in a great effort as a marathon runner? Nicely done, Dad.

Boston Marathon: Only Conor

This is straight out of the Conor Shelley playbook. Spend the weekend in Boston with his best buddy from college, Vess. Note that "spend the weekend" is a top-secret code for late night/early morning hour activity revolving around Adult Beverages. Decide at the last minute -- literally, like, wake up and say what the hey -- to run the Boston Marathon. Take this selfie in Hopkinton (note the high-tech pre-race flannel; also note the ridiculously low bib number with "nobody" scribbled in sharpie for no apparent reason). Then proceed to run a fancy negative-split, re-qualifying time. Neat.

Boston Marathon: Alum update

Quick update from our first finishers:

--Katie Messina (photo from Matt Panebianco's phone) crushed it, running 3:03:18 (1:30:32 through 13.1) and placing close to top 100 in age group. She races for Battle Road TC in Boston.
--Kara Lightowler similarly ran great, 3:09:42 (1:32:57 through 13.1). K-Lights is proving to be quite consistent at this distance!
--Conor Shelley ran a negative split 3:01:47 (first 13.1 = 1:32:19).

Bucknell: April’s Magic Carpet

Alert readers of this not-so-fancy blog know that I have often referred to the Boston University indoor track as the “Magic Carpet.” That venue, and the meets held there, has generated countless career-best times, IC4A/ECAC qualifying marks and the majority of our indoor track school records. Well. Fast-forward a few months to the Bison Outdoor Classic, our one and only foray to Lewisburg, PA, for the awesome meet at Bucknell University. While the scope is limited – one meet per year as opposed to three or four meets at BU during the winter – the yield of outstanding results is quite astounding. It’s no secret that I love going to Bucknell; it’s a beautiful campus, the weather is almost always favorable (hard to believe, during the volatile month of April, in an area that has almost identical climactic conditions to the mid-Hudson Valley), and the place is seeping with baseball history as it is where the legendary Christy Mathewson went to college.

And oh yeah: When it’s time to start playing track, our athletes have produced some epic performances on the blue and orange oval at Christy Mathewson Memorial Stadium. The school records and IC4A/ECAC marks aside, embedded deeply in the results were some fantastic breakthrough performances by several of our athletes. There’s something about that place that we cannot put our finger on, but it almost always winds up being a great meet for us. Kevin Donner, the head coach at Bucknell, takes great pride in his meet and has been known to call it “Mt. SAC East,” for its penchant of producing national-caliber performances close to home. The meet is well-organized, low-key (there’s not even the ubiquitous “team packet,” which is usually filled with useless information anyway) and easy for our athletes to navigate. Check in about an hour before your race; get your hip number and lane assignment; stay loose; get on the track and rock. Just like Boston in the wintertime. Dear Bucknell: Thanks for another great meet. See you next April, and remember to have sunny skies and light winds once again.

Bucknell Bison, Day 2: Men's 4x800 relay, school record and IC4A qualifier!

What a truly tremendous way to end a fabulous weekend at Bucknell. We were hoping to nab an IC4A qualifying mark (standard = 7:43.00) in the 4x800 relay. The relay was dealt a bit of a blow because Zachary Ropes came down with some allergy related illness symptoms leading up to the race. We decided to sub out Zachary with Stefan Morton and it was mission accomplished -- in a big way, with an unexpected and dominant school record. As always, the leadoff leg sets the tone, and Brian Henderson did this in a huge way with a statement-making 1:54.7. He handed off to Drew Burns, who was immediately overtaken by an absolute blazing leg from Geneseo's second man (who split 1:51 and change). This hard charging Geneseo runner actually helped Drew, who threw down a monster 1:53.4. Steven Morrison made up the deficit in a hurry and extended the lead with a game-changing 1:52.2 (how much did we miss HIM during indoors?). Stefan got the baton in great shape, and he hung on for the school record in decisive fashion, knocking out the four-year-old mark that is one of the most hallowed on the books.

Not to be overlooked here is the excellent depth our middle-distance runners exhibited. Ropes led off the B Team (which ran in the first section) with a 1:56.8, despite feeling the effects of his illness. Mark Cappuccitti broke 2:00 for the first time in awesome fashion, and Steven Rizzo did the same. Add to that Anthony Colasanto's open race time of 1:57.86, and that's quite a bit of middle distance depth in a few short hours on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Bucknell, one that we won't soon forget.

Bucknell Bison, Day 2: Joe Cafaro's 400-meter hurdle school record!

Whoa. Check out THAT pose. You know. Some would refer to senior sprinter Joe Cafaro as "Mr. Marist" ... but alas, that's a story for another day. For today, we'll just call him the new school record holder in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, in one of the more remarkable breakthrough races in recent memory. Joe decided to skip right over 55 seconds (previous career best = 56.22 seconds) and run a heat-winning time of 54.93 seconds, breaking Hakim Cunningham's two-year-old mark of 55.62. And yeah. He wasn't afraid to do a little stylin' afterwards. Nicely done!

Bucknell Bison, Day 2: Danisha Craig, 400-meter school record!

After a fantabulous indoor track season, in which she set career bests and school records in seemingly every meet and every race, junior Danisha Craig has had a little more uneven outdoor track season -- mostly due to severe shin splints that have hampered her training and racing. However, Danisha overcame this in her usual tough and classy way on Saturday afternoon, forging her way to a tremendous school record in the 400-meter dash at Bucknell. Danisha zoomed to a time of 57.83 seconds, eclipsing the nine-year-old mark of Holly Burns, which was 58.32 seconds. A great race from a great athlete. Nicely done!

Bucknell Bison, Day 1: Palmer Weimann joins sub-15:00 5km list

Congrats to sophomore Palmer Weimann for becoming the 26th member of the sub-15:00 club for 5,000 meters. Much like at Colonial, Palmer did it in scintillating fashion, closing his last kilometer in an almost unfathomable 2:49 -- a pace he has never maintained in any part of a 3km race. Ever. How did he DO that? Very proud of Palmer and his 10-second PR and milestone achievement. Nicely done!

Bucknell Bison, Day 1: Stefan Morton qualifies for IC4A 1,500

Congrats to senior captain Stefan Morton for his IC4A qualifying mark in the 1,500-meter run under the lights on Friday night. It's the second year in a row that he has qualified for the event at IC4As. As you can see by the splits, the first lap was fast but then the field clogged up on the second lap. Stefan mustered a strong finishing kick to just dip under the IC4A standard. Neat.

Mt. SAC Relays: Nicki Nesi, ECAC qualifier!

Fifth-year senior Nicki Nesi ran a strong PR, an ECAC qualifier and a near school record (just 1.10 seconds off Brittany Burns’ school mark, set at the same meet in 2011) for a fabulous effort out in California. Nicely done, Nicki! Our other two athletes out there – Emily Burns and Ali Bartolotta – represented the program well and strong, but they were a little bit off their game on this night. Coach Chuck reported that it was a bit windy out there and they both were a little flat, but more big races and better days are ahead for them all. Good stuff!

What's next: Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic

While our three women's steeplers will be out in California, much of the rest of the team will be in Lewisburg, PA, for the Bison Outdoor Classic at Bucknell University. Because of Easter, the meet will be held on Friday afternoon/evening (mostly distance races on the track) and Saturday morning and afternoon (everything else), as opposed to the usual Saturday/Sunday schedule. We will post a final time schedule when entries close. We always look forward to this meet each year. Hopefully, the weather will be favorable.

What's next: Mt. SAC Relays

Coach Chuck is leaving for California tomorrow with three women's distance runners, who will be competing on Thursday afternoon in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Mt. SAC Relays in suburban Los Angeles. Fifth-year senior Nicki Nesi, sophomore Emily Burns and freshman Ali Bartolotta will be racing at 5:15 p.m. (Pacific time) in the open women's steeplechase. The meet will be held at El Camino College in Torrance, CA, due to construction at Mt. SAC in Walnut. We wish them well and we know they will represent our program proudly in California. Check @maristxctf on Twitter for updates from Coach Chuck from the meet and from their trip out there.

Alums: The gift that keeps on giving

One of the great things about this program is the random pop-ins by old alums. Yesterday, Schab texted me that he would be in town but he was limited by family commitments. I surmised there probably would be no conflicts at 5:30 a.m., and so he joined me and my pre-dawn jogging partners for several miles in the chill of the morning. I forgot to take a photo of him, but he was there and it was great to see him. Then, later this afternoon, with the temperature a good 45 degrees warmer, Ned Kenyon stopped by the McCann Center for a surprise visit. He posted this photo on Facebook with the following line: "Nice visit with the old coach. And I mean OLD." Swell. Thanks for stopping by, men. Any and all are always welcome back home by the Hudson. Forever Foxes. Neat!

National Sibling Day

There is a "national day" for everything ... today is National Sibling Day. We took advantage of the freakish 80-degree afternoon to have dinner down by the river, and Heidi took this rare shot of three smiling siblings in one place. National Sibling Day, indeed!
