A word about the weather

Spring weather in the Northeast is quite unpredictable and ever-changing. The next few days will prove my point. It has been cold and raw and windy and rainy the past few days. The next few days will be beautiful and eventually summer-like, which is hard to believe but true.

On Tuesday, the weather conditions were atrocious. There was a cold, strong and biting wind. It was raining sideways. And yet ... and yet ... it was a workout day for most of the women's team and a few members of the men's team. The fieldhouse was occupied by the baseball team. We had no choice. We went to the Spackenkill track.

Trust me when I say this is the last place I wanted to be. But it all worked out. The workout went well for those involved. The wind was the biggest factor, but the women and men dealt with it like champs. Nicely done. It had to be done.

The lousy conditions brought to mind a long-ago practice during the cross country season -- probably in the 1993/1994 range. The day's protocol called for mile repeats at the Vanderbilt trail. There was some debate as to the merits of such a workout on such a day -- especially from one young local harrier with the surname of Rose. This surly young man thought it was a stupid idea to do this workout on this day, and he was not shy about telling me and the team just that.

His reticence steeled the resolve of the others (and me). The boys -- led by Mr. Bucket and most probably Dirt Baird (it was a long time ago, I do not recall exactly) -- spread mud all over their faces in an act of solidarity. They did not have to spread the mud on their legs. Their splashing mile repeats through puddles, rocks and roots took care of that.

They got through the workout like champs. The van reeked of mud, sweat, steam and filth on the way home ... and for weeks to follow.

And you know what? That team ran well the rest of the season. Steeled by the resolve of doing that workout on that day in those conditions -- what other guys on other teams in other places were as tough and as crazy on them that day? -- they raced with toughness and confidence that only such a group effort in extreme conditions can engender.

Our young local harrier probably was speaking the voice of reason prior to the workout. But I know of no one on that team who regretted that workout that day.

No matter how bad the day is, it's probably not as terrible as you think once you get moving. While it would be nice to have some of this great weather when the team is actually on campus and practicing (Note: Most of the upcoming great weather will be wasted on Easter Break from Friday through Monday!), we would do our best to deal with the conditions positively and with toughness.

It's the best way to make the best of the fickle spring weather.

Mudders and Grunters

Check out these fine photos taken by DECKER at Mudders and Grunters on Sunday. Our esteemed Alumni Team took second place to Albany Running Exchange, and had a lot of fun doing so.

You'll note Kirk Dornton and Rickie Ambrosio leading the charge at the start. Yes, that's Schabby running shirtless despite the mid-40s overcast chill and chest-deep water. What a nut. Steve Hicks got 2nd overall, nicely done!

For more photos from the event, taken by Decker, check this link.

Shout out to the 4x400 relay

I thought of this item this morning: Our men's 4x400 relay ran really well at Monmouth. Although the time wasn't that quick, the guys RACED tremendously in conditions that were far from ideal for sprinters (or for anyone, for that matter!).

It was getting dark. The wind was whipping. The temperature was approaching 30 degrees. I do not have the individual splits (my hands were numb at that point), but all the guys raced well and strong, and I know that Coach Horton was pumped at the positive end to the otherwise endless day in New Jersey.

I will post splits soon.

Monmouth results

In the "I'm too old for this stuff" department ...

We left campus yesterday morning at 5:30 a.m., and did not arrive back until 11 p.m. I drove the van both ways! I love driving the van, but the ride home toward the end got tough, despite the riveting "van talk" with Janzo and friends (last night's topic: Religion).

Thanks for Kyle Havard's family for the great post-meet feed, despite the bus driver's being none-too-pleased with the unplanned stop. Oh well. That's life. We offered to feed him but he refused.

Overall, this was our best season-opening outdoor meet in recent memory. Despite chilly and windy conditions that deteriorated as the day went on (by the time the 4x400 went off, it was downright nasty and getting dark), we had many PRs and PR-type efforts (PRs noted below).

Nestor's 5km was not a PR but was close and he was doubling back from the 1500. Fitz PRed by 30 seconds in the 5km despite doubling back from 1500. Janzo had his best first steeple of the season. Duggan ran tough and PRed by about a second.

Perhaps the biggest star of the day was Tom DeVaney in the javelin, with his personal-best launch despite a lack of practice. Nicely done!

I will post splits at a later date, but at least the results list is here.

A few tidbits

A couple of quick items ...

-- Addendum to the weekend half-marathon results. Charlie Williams (the pride of Commack) ran the NYC race strongly in 1:28:30. He is training for the Vermont Marathon later this spring.

-- We WILL be running a men's 4x400 relay at Penn Relays this spring, provided everyone stays healthy and we have a strong team ready to compete well. This was not included in the preseason meet-by-meet breakdown. Everyone should be able to experience Penn, and this will give our long sprinters something to work for and chase as the spring meets proceed.

-- Murphy's Law of track weather was in full effect. Last week? Beautiful, sunny and warm. No practice. This week? Rainy and chilly (early) followed by extremely windy (today) at the Vassar Track. Much like youth is wasted on the young, the good weather was wasted on Spring Break week. Predictable.

-- Speaking of windy and chilly ... Monmouth. Saturday. Bank on it.

-- Speaking of Monmouth ... bus and van departure is 5:30. That's a.m., for those keeping score at home.

-- Mudders and Grunters this weekend. Big alumni turnout expected at Kirk and Liza's house. Be there or be square. Hopkins gets first dibs on comfy sleeping arrangements. Why? Come on! He's HOPKINS. He's the MAN.

Alumni run strong over the weekend

Great alumni texts came buzzing into my phone this weekend. In the order they were received ...

1. Sean Prinz placed 14th overall at the National Half Marathon on Saturday in his new home (DC) in 1:12:07, a 5:31 pace according to the official results. Aside from being a great time and a great effort, this was strong because Prinz has been dealing with a nagging Achilles that curtailed his mileage the past few weeks. The forced rest must have done some good.

Also, in a departure from his very meticulous ways, this was the first race post-college in which Prinz did not wear a watch. As a result, the only splits from the usually numbers-conscious Prinz came from the big splits at the race. Here's what he provided for me in the splits department:

1M: 5:29; 5M: 26:49; 10M: 54:39

Good stuff!

2. Joe Tarantello, in the midst of his high mileage buildup for Boston in a few weeks, ran a personal-best time of 1:14:52 at the NYC Half Marathon in what was a deceptively hilly Central Park. Here are Joe's excellent splits.

5M: 28:20; 10M: 56:57; 20km: 1:11:20.

Based on this, I would say Joey Tat's in PR shape as he gets ready to count down to Bean Town. Great job, Coach!

3. Mike Rolek, despite suffering from a severe sinus infection, had the most lucrative run of the weekend. Running in a 20km race in beautiful Newark, NJ, Rolek placed sixth overall and third among Garden State runners, in 1:05:34 (5:16 pace). For finishing third among NJ entrants, Rolek cashed a cool $1,000 prize. All righty then!

A great weekend for one and all. Keep running strong, men!

Looking ahead to outdoor track

Here's a quick look at our outdoor track schedule, with dates, meets and comments on the meets.

Saturday, March 27, Monmouth Season Opener, West Long Branch, NJ: It has been a long time since we have opened our season at this meet. We usually open up at Army, since it is convenient. But the Army meet was pushed back one week. So we head back to the Jersey Shore, where my last memory of this meet was standing like a frozen mummy in the chilly and windy conditions. The Monmouth campus is just a few miles from the beach, and it can be windy in late March. This meet features a full slate of events, including the coach's favorite (10km!). Most of our athletes will be running this meet, with the exception of those that competed late in indoors.

Friday, April 2, Sam Howell Invitation (Distance races): This is Good Friday, and the majority of the team will be back home for the short Easter break. For a few long-distance runners, this meet will be available. The time standards for entry into the meet got a lot harder this year, so our numbers might be lower than in the past.

Friday/Saturday, April 9-10, Bison Outdoor Classic, Bucknell: Really looking forward to this one, a meet that we have never attended. The Friday portion of the meet includes most distance races, with some elite-level fields. The Saturday portion of the meet includes the rest of the events. It is a competitive meet and should be an excellent, early-season test for us. On a personal note, I have always wanted to visit the Lewisburg, Pa., campus of Bucknell because it is where one of my favorite historical baseball figures went to college -- Christy Mathewson. The Big Six. The Christian Gentleman. Matty was a true American hero.

Friday, April 16, Larry Ellis Invitation (Distance races): Ditto Sam Howell. With Bucknell the week prior and Penn Relays the week after, our numbers for this night might be very, very light. We'll see.

Saturday, April 17, Metropolitan Championships, Palisades Park, NJ: Nice meet and a nice venue in the former swamps and toxic waste dumps of my otherwise beautiful Garden State.

Thursday, April 22, Penn Relays: Distance Night at Penn. Probably will include a handful of men this year and that's it.

Saturday, April 24, Penn Relays: Coach Chuck is planning on bringing a women's 4x800 this year as he did last year.

Sunday, April 25, Yale Springtime Invitational: An excellent, post-Penn meet at Yale. We have been going to this meet for many, many years.

Friday, April 30, Matthew Vassar Open: Ha! As close to a home meet as we get! Vassar's second annual (for us, anyway) Friday night meet. We will have a good number of athletes who will not be competing at MAACs attending this meet. I am trying to talk the Vassar coach (James McCowan) into adding a 10km for us. If he runs it, we will come.

Saturday/Sunday, May 1-2, MAAC Championships, Rider: I will not be in attendance for Day 1 of the meet because of my daughter's First Holy Communion. New this year: A 4x800 relay on Day 1. Otherwise, the usual deal.

Saturday, May 8, NYC Qualifying Challenge, Icahn Stadium: We have brought a few athletes to this meet the past couple of years. A decent last-chance meet.

Friday/Sunday, May 14-16, IC4A/ECAC Championships, Princeton: TBA, depending on qualifiers.

Friday/Saturday, May 28-29, NCAA Regionals, Greensboro, NC: TBA, depending on qualifiers.

June 23-27, USATF Championships, Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa: TBA, depending on qualifiers.

2010 Indoor track recap: Mid and long distance

Part two of the lists ... middle distances, long distances, mid-dist relays.

Interesting stats of note:

-- In the 3km, there were 24 performances faster than 9:00, achieved by 12 different individuals
-- In the 5km, the only sub-15:00 performances were run by fifth-year runners Girma Segni and David Raucci. Another reminder of how much they will be missed
-- While there were only 3 sub-2:00 performances in the 800, the first six performances in the 1,000 convert to sub-2:00.
-- There were no school records set in any events during this indoor season. This can be viewed in one of two ways: 1. Wow, Pete, it wasn't a great season, huh? 2. Wow, Pete, those are some pretty challenging school records the program has, huh? I'm leaning more toward #2, but I am a glass-half-full kind of guy ...

Enjoy the numbers!

Spring break

Most spring sports here at Marist are on the road for competitions and/or training at some exotic, far-away and/or warm weather spot for this week. Many coaches and administrators asked me last week if we were "all set" for spring break -- the assumption being we are doing something like this.

Well, we are not.

Spring Break is truly a break for the track family. We have been cranking non-stop since the New Year in terms of practices and competitions. This is a natural, albeit short, lull between our winter and spring seasons.

So, while other coaches have gone far, far away, we are just going home.

The same cannot be said for many team members! A whole gaggle of Running Red Foxes have migrated for the week to Myrtle Beach -- presumably for sun and fun ... and training, too!

If you are reading this down there, men, I have one simple message to you: Run, Rehydrate, Run Some More!

See you next week.

Some more AAU commentary

Thanks for the comments on the AAU. A few comments on the comments, if you do not mind ...

To Walsh: Easy does it on your Wantagh brethren Quimes! It was his coach (me!) who instructed him not to participate. As a general rule, anyone who runs at ICs really should not be taking part in this exercise, since the week after ICs is their in-between seasons recovery week. But Quimes (unofficial motto given to him by one of his teammates: No Brain, No Pain) was so moved by Nic's sub-10:00 and the fine and festive atmosphere that he felt compelled to strip down and race the boys. Technically, yes, doing just the second one would qualify as "sandbagging," but it wasn't an intentional sandbag. If that makes sense.

One more thing about Quimes, who I love having on the team, by the way: I think he is primed for a big spring. He is motivated and training hard. And as goofy as he can be (I sometimes refer to him as the only middle-schooler I've ever coached), he is tough and smart when it comes to his running. He has, and he will, make Wantagh proud.

To Mike G.: Not sure if it was always like this, but the intended rest interval was 10 minutes. At least that is what Conor said: 10-10-10. After about 8 minutes, though, we all got bored and started the second one.

To Prinz: Keegan is the man and is a great, great 10km runner (along with a sub-15:00 5km man). But when it comes to speed and kicking and the like, you might indeed have the edge. Although you are an "old guy," having graduated here several years ago, based on what I have seen and read you are fit and in your running prime right now. Even though Keegs has you in the PRs department, it certainly would have made for intrigue if you were up here banging heads with him and the other young guys.

To Rolek: I am not too up on who has the records and such. Glad that you still have it. Your history with "school records" is very interesting. Your 30:36 for 10km two springs ago ranks up there as one of the biggest highlights of my coaching career; I will never, ever forget that! It also was perhaps the most short-lived record on the books, as your pal Girma snatched it right away from you at Penn a few weeks later with his far less impressive (but still faster) 30:22. Here's hoping that Girm's mark gets lowered more this spring -- by him or one of his teammates!

Anyway, thanks for chiming in everyone. Your support of the program and the blog is always appreciated. We are heading into spring break, but I will try to keep the blog somewhat lively with a few posts ... if the spirit moves me.

AAU Championships, 2010

The fine Marist Running tradition of the AAU Championships (2x3200 meters at the McCann Center Track) was renewed today, on a day in which it easily could have been held outdoors.

Keegan was the overall champion, congrats to him, but no surprise considering he is our 10km specialist. A few other highlights of note:

-- Nicoletti was definitely the pre-meet focus of attention. He had never broken 10:00 for 3200 meters, and the buzz was to get him sub-10:00. He was nervous; according to Posch, his roommate and good friend, he was a basket case. But with the help of his friends and teammates, he came through it with flying colors. Nicely done, Nic!
-- Nestor broke away from the pack midway through the first race. The snickering that he wouldn't be able to hold it and would die was definitely audible. But our boy had a great day today and came close to Keegs for the overall title.
-- Brownie had never broken 10:00 until today! Congrats to him!
-- Joel M. continues to impress. After today, he is definitely pumped for the 10km. Me too!
-- Quimes decided on a whim to jump into the second one and cruised to victory.
-- Duggan had his usual strong showing and is looking really solid for 10km in the spring.

IC4As, day 2

Girma Segni (14:30.84, 10th place) and David Raucci (15:00.84, 28th place) ended their long and storied indoor track careers at Marist in the 5,000-meter race at IC4As on Sunday.

Girma had a great run. We were hoping he would get in the seeded (hot) heat of the event, but he just missed the cut. Believe me, I tried. I personally lobbied IC4A meet director Steve Bartold upon arriving at BU. He told me they would redraw the sections if the fast section scratched down below 12 runners. That seemed fair to me. Well, it scratched down to exactly 12 runners; Girma was the second fastest seed in the slower section. The fastest seed was scratched. So he just missed making the fast section by one scratch. Such is life.

Girma ran tough in the unseeded section, winning with a strong kick. His last lap was in 30 seconds. His last 400 was in 62 seconds. His last 1,000 was in 2:45. Excellent! Could he have run faster in the seeded section? It is certainly possible, but you can only run the race you are in, and run it well he did.

Lesson to be learned for future IC4A qualifiers: If you want to make the hot heat at ICs in the 3km or 5km, you better run a really fast time during the regular season. Girma did his best, running 14:31 at BU/Terrier, despite recovering from an early winter injury. I didn't think it was worth the risk of squeezing in another 5km (other than MAACs, which is generally a tactical, run-for-place race) to try to get a faster seed time; we figured the 14:31 would be borderline for the fast/slower sections. We were right.

David did not have a great finish. The early part of his race went well, but it really fell apart over the last 1,000, as you will see in the splits below. I felt he had a real shot at a PR as late as 4km into the race, but it just did not happen.

Girma's splits:
34, 67 (33), 1:43 (36), 2:18 (35), 2:53 (35)
3:28 (35), 4:03 (35), 4:37 (34), 5:13 (36), 5:48 (35)
6:23 (35), 7:00 (37), 7;35 (35), 8:10 (35), 8:46 (36)
9:21 (35), 9:58 (37), 10:34 (36), 11:09 (35), 11:45 (36)
12:17 (37), 12:52 (35), 13:28 (36), 14:00 (34), 14:30.84 (30.84)
Kilometer splits: 2:53, 2:55, 2:58, 2:59, 2:45.84

David's splits:
36, 70 (34), 1:46 (36), 2:21 (35), 2:56 (35)
3:32 (36), 4:07 (35), 4:41 (34), 5:17 (36), 5:52 (35)
6:28 (36), 7:04 (36), 7:38 (34), 8:14 (36), 8:50 (35)
9:26 (36), 10:01 (35), 10:37 (36), 11:13 (36), 11:50 (37)
12:26 (36), 13:05 (40), 13:45 (40), missed split, 15:00.84 (75.84)
Kilometer splits: 2:56, 2:56, 2:58, 3:00, 3:10.84

Both Girma and David end their careers with outdoor track eligibility. So today was an end, but not THE end.

This concludes the indoor track season. Our first outdoor track meet is in less than three weeks. The cycle never ends.

More thoughts and commentary on the upcoming season in the next few days.

IC4A/ECAC results, day 1

Overview: At IC4As, Matt Flint ran a strong PR in the 3k in a tactical race. Will Griffin struggled in the same race, but should not take away from a strong season for him. The DMR did well, achieving our pre-meet goal of sub-10:20. Everyone did their job. Could have been a little better, but definitely a positive outcome overall.

Across town at ECACs, the women ran 9:26.93 for the 4x800 relay. I was not there, but Chuck said the ladies did decent -- not great, not terrible. Individual relay splits are listed below. I do not have lap splits because I wasn't there to see it. Wish I could have been there.

On Sunday, we have Girma Segni and David Raucci in the 5,000. Race time is 1:45 p.m. I will post splits and results upon returning to Poughkeepsie.

Greetings from Burlington

Random notes while sitting with the laptop in my hotel room in Burlington, MA ...

-- It always seems to happen on IC4A weekend. The weather outside is beautiful! They are calling for sunny and near 50 degrees this weekend in Boston. I always have the same thought: The weather today is quite possibly better than it will be for many of our outdoor track meets in the coming weeks and months.

-- Last night was one of the very few van trips I have taken this winter. It has been almost exclusively bus travel. I like the bus because I do not have to drive, but I can never get comfortable on a bus. So I guess I like driving the vans better ... except when I'm tired, it's dark and there is the odor of smelly feet and Quimes' flatulations ... like last night.

-- Speaking of the bus, a few Marist Track Legends that have lived on through the years: 1. The DVD player is broken. I always say this; everyone always believes me; it's never broken; I just don't want to watch/hear movies. I'm not a movie person. 2. Is the bathroom occupied? Yes. Eric is in there. It's an old Pete/Phil Era joke from one of our endless trips out to Notre Dame. It endures to this day, and never fails to work when someone really needs to use the bathroom. 3. We have had our share of crazy bus drivers through the years. Now that we use a local bus company, we had a regular fleet of drivers and know most of them well. They are, for the most part, very good guys and very competent, which makes me feel good. I guess #3 doesn't really fit, but what the heck, I'm just typing randomly here ...

-- The IC4A meet has lost some of its luster over the past few years, but not for this program. There are other last-chance type meets that many programs chase; some programs blow off ICs all together. Again, NOT US. We are proud members, we are proud to have qualifiers (most ever this year) and we will continue to proudly attend this meet as long as I am alive to say something about it. I may expound on this subject later if the mood strikes me.

For now, back to chillin' in the hotel before cheerin' on the men down at BU later this afternoon.

I'll be back with splits, results and commentary tonight.

Putting the couch to good use

Last night, we welcomed three old friends and proud Marist Alumni Racing Team members back to the office – Prinz, Schab, Walsh. Great to see them! And, they got to see my very Victorian couch (Note: More than one astute office observers, last night it was Prinz, have called the couch Victorian … which is slang for “really old looking piece of furniture that looks like it should be at the Salvation Army.”)

I’ve seen Walsh a fair amount this indoor season, and it always seems as though Schab is around the team. But Prinz? Our boy has been out of the country – heck, off the continent! – for quite some time and I cannot remember the last time I saw him. So it was great to see another of Wantagh’s finest back in his old stomping grounds. He looks trim and fit and ready to rock and roll on the roads. Prinz is moving back to the DC area, where he has a great job opportunity.

Schab is fresh off his fancy new marathon PR that was documented here a few posts ago. He seemed intent on celebrating his fancy 2:45 race last night. My guess is he did.

Walsh is fresh off a great indoor season for Molloy in which he set some really excellent PRs. And he told me that law school is in the offing for him – probably in the fall of 2011. He impressed me with his LSAT score (of course, I do not remember it now!), which was higher than anyone else I know who took the test. I’m pleased that he has decided on this very admirable and noble career path.

Now, alert readers of this blog must be wondering: Didn’t Pete and Walsh not see eye-to-eye back in the day? Yes! We had our moments, to be sure. But we have both admitted errors in each other’s ways, mended fences and moved on. I’m glad we have, as I am proud to call him an alumni of our school and our program.

All of these guys “had their moments,” so to speak (hell, who didn’t in college?). But now they are all on great career tracks and equally as important (to me, anyway) they are seriously committed to running and running well with the MART singlets – home and away, as Prinz likes to say.

Did they like the couch? I hope they did. I liked that they were here on the couch, if only for a few minutes. Thanks for the coffee and for the company, fellas, and see you down the road soon.

IC4A/ECAC this weekend

For the majority of the team, indoor track is over and preparation has begun for outdoor track. But for a select few, indoor track -- the season that never seems to end -- plows on for one more week.

ECACs: We are bringing a 4x800 relay to the Reggie Lewis Center on Saturday. Tentative participants: Jillian Corley, Jackie Gamboli, Briana Crowe, Kim Bartlett, Laura Lindsley (alternate)

IC4As: We are fortunate to have the most qualifiers in school history (5 individuals, 1 relay). One qualifier (Vess) is not running as he continues to battle back from the severe anemia (low iron) that short-circuited his indoor season. Here's who's running, and when.

Saturday, 3km: Will Griffin. Matt Flint.
Saturday, DMR: Janczyk (1200), C-Fred (400), Panebianco (800), Quimes (1600). Interestingly, this is two seniors and two freshmen! I just realized this today. Fascinating.
Sunday, 5km: Girma Segni, David Raucci. One more time for the old men (fifth-year seniors)!

Goals: School record at ECACs. Personal bests for 3km and 5km guys. Sub-10:20 for the DMR.
