It has been a while since we checked in with an update on Marist
Running Alum Steve Hicks and his quest for the sub-15:00 5km. For those of you
that haven’t checked out his blog lately, get caught up on it. There’s great
stuff there at sub15minutes.blogspot.com. I think he has developed sort of a
cult following.
I saw Steve briefly on Monday as he passed through Poughkeepsie
with his mom, en route to Swarthmore for the excellent Last Chance meet they
have there. He raced late Monday night with his fellow sub-15:00 blogmate Sam
and Marist Running Alum Sean Hopkins.
Steve just missed the goal, finishing in 15:02.48. He provided
the following splits via text message:
70, 72, 71, 71 (4:44)
71, 72, 73, 74 (9:34)
76, 76, 73, 70
32
Steve closed his last 800 in sub-2:20 (nicely done!) and said he
was not too bummed about just missing the barrier. He “fell asleep” a little in
the middle/late laps but otherwise ran an excellent effort and a PERSONAL-BEST
time, of which we are very proud.
Sam struggled with stomach issues and DNFed (side note: Check out his insanely funny blog post about his race and post-race “lodging”). Hopkins “ate it” (not his exact words, but you get the idea)
and had a subpar race.
