Our next meet is the NCAA Northeast Regionals, Friday in Buffalo. Race times are 11 a.m. for the women's 6km and 12 noon for the men's 10km. A quick glance at the forecast for Buffalo and Amherst for the next few days is calling for ... winter. Brutal, premature ... winter. Between now and race time, there is a good chance that close to a foot of snow will fall. When it's not snowing, there will be near record-breaking cold temperatures.
This is the third (and, mercifully, final) year that this meet will be held in Buffalo. For the record, I have nothing against this fine western New York city and the even finer folks at UB who host this meet. They cannot control the weather. All I know is, each year the weather poses a challenge. Each year, we think, "geez, it can't be any worse than last year." Hey. It's still Monday. There's still hope. But right now, we're preparing -- mentally, physically -- for cold and snow. Which is what the weather was like last year. And the year before that. Next year, we begin a three-year run at Franklin Park in Boston. Where, presumably, a foot of snow will not fall this week!
