Valleys and peaks

Please excuse the sun-like reflection in the middle of this screen shot from my laptop, but I hope you literally "get the picture" here. This is a map of new Covid cases in Dutchess County since the pandemic started in March. This map was displayed during a staff-wide Webex call yesterday afternoon. Like so many things pandemic-related, it was sobering. And it made me think the following: Look at the "valley" during the summer months -- June, July, August, September. Certain days, the number of new cases was in the single digits. Recall back to that time: This is when entire college athletic seasons -- including cross country -- were being canceled. Please note that I am not making a value judgment of that decision, just noting that it was made when it was made (in hindsight, probably a smart move as much as it pains me to say that). Now, fast forward to the recent past and present. We are facing an Everest-like climb in cases. Another database I check daily reported 229,603 new cases and 4,402 deaths yesterday. And what are we doing? Playing a basketball season (albeit stop-and-start due to multiple postponements and rescheduling of games) and planning for all other sports in all other seasons to resume practices and competition. No one wants to return to practice and competition more than we do. But ... once you get past the glare of an idiot who cannot take pictures with his cell phone ... what's wrong with this picture?
