While nothing has been confirmed yet, it appears the MAAC Cross Country Championship (winter version) will be held on Friday, March 5, at a golf club course near Atlantic City. All signs are pointing toward that. There was a site visit by meet planners yesterday and everything seemed to go smoothly. A few weeks ago, there was serious talk that the “meet” would be held on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. Fortunately, it seems the momentum for such a “unique” idea has quelled, thank goodness. A golf course in southern New Jersey in early March? We’ll take it.
As always, the caveat has to be mentioned, with the following pandemic clichés that we are so used to hearing. All plans are fluid. All plans are aspirational. We may need to pivot, out of an abundance of caution. We’ll have to circle back to these ideas as the situation unfolds. Phew. How’s that for Covid-speak? Look. We are going on three full seasons (outdoor track 2020, XC 2020, indoor track 2021) of missed practices, meets, championship. There is “pent-up demand,” as economists like to put it. But there are also 4,000 Americans dying each day from this virus. It forms a complicated dichotomy that leads to complicated questions … questions I’m certainly not smart enough to answer. I just pray for the strength to guide our program through whatever comes our way during the next few weeks and months.
