Even in the best of circumstances, the relays at Penn Relays
are challenging for relay participants. You are huddled in the pre-race corral
for a long time, then herded onto the track to race with little or no warmup.
On Thursday evening, the women’s 4x400 had to endure not only that but also
cold and rainy conditions. Considering those circumstances, their effort in
heat 7 was admirable – with a strong, third-place finish. We are proud of them
all, with a special nod to anchor leg Debbie Boerke, who did double duty on the
day after her strong 400 hurdles race in the morning.
