MAAC XC Championships: Men's results

The men had their strongest race of the season, closing the gap on MAAC rival schools. It was a wild and exciting battle behind perennial powerhouse Iona. While we're not satisfied with 5th place, we are certainly pleased with the efforts exhibited today. Two of our true freshmen earned All Rookie honors. Neat.

MAAC XC Championships: Women's results

Very strong showing for our lead runner, Parker O'Brien, who moved up in the field and earned All-MAAC honors (top-15). Otherwise, we fell a bit short of our team and individual goals on a sunny and warm late morning. On to the NCAA Northeast Regional meet!

What's next = MAAC XC Championships

The first of three MAAC Championships of the academic year in our sport -- cross country -- will be held on Saturday at Twin Ponds at the Farm in Montgomery (Orange County). Manhattan College is the host. But really, we (Marist) are the closest school to the Farm, a mere 43 minutes away! One coach from a prominent MAAC powerhouse team texted me a few weeks ago, saying that his team would be "staying in Poughkeepsie" on the night before the meet. I replied: "Neat! So are we!" They may even do their team dinner at Cosimo's across from the Marist campus. Also neat! Anyway? The long-range weather forecast looks like it will be unseasonably mild this week, leading into Saturday's races. The women's 6km race is at 11a; the men's 8km race is at 12 noon. Hope to see (some of) you there!

Been a long time ...

Most days, you just go through the motions. Think about it. Think about all you miss by not truly paying attention. Randomly, one day last week at the track at practice, a place I’ve been hundreds and hundreds of times through the years, I stopped and caught a glimpse of an image in my horizon and I scrambled to take a picture with my crappy old Android phone. This is the picture, and this is the story it tells: A coaching lifer, Terry Horton, still coaching and caring and showing up every day, at age 75, more than 50 years after he started. This, too, is highly neat.

Ashokan view

Last Sunday, while the women’s XC team was getting ready for their truly outstanding showing at the University of Vermont, the men’s XC team requested a special long-run venue = Ashokan Reservoir in Ulster County. They agreed to an earlier departure (7:30a) and it was worth the slight sleep deprivation! It was a crisp and cool morning and the men enjoyed a great long run (along with a few recruits!) and followed it up with an awesome group photo in front of the reservoir. Highly neat.

Metro championships: Men's results

Strong day for a partial squad of men at Mets, with a third-place (hardware) finish on a fast course in Newark. Here are (some of the) men’s highlights:

--All 9 finishers posted personal-best times for 8km cross country (this is highly neat)
--Third-place finish was highlighted by a tight 1-5 compression (20.67 seconds separated first finish through fifth finisher). This continues to be a season-long goal for the men
--Mendonca’s lead-runner finish was a major breakthrough effort. Go Franko!
--Mendonca, Locker and Pattison earned top-5 scoring spots for first time in their Marist XC careers (also highly neat)
--5 of the 9 finishers were freshmen (Mayer, Wisker, Cavuoto, Ferreri)
--Next up for the men = IC4A Championships, Friday, 13 Oct at Van Cortlandt Park
