Marist Running was well represented at
Sunday’s Big Sur International Marathon in California. Ryan Fitzsimons (Central Park TC) placed
eighth overall and third in his age group in 2:47:09 (6:22 pace). Strong winds
slowed the times down, as Fitz noted the leaders were more than 10 minutes off
their usual paces. Fitz reported via text: “I felt very strong and in control
for the first 15 then the wheels started to come off. Fought some really bad
leg cramps from mile 22 onward, which was frustrating.’’ Still, he is in great
shape and the top finish proved that. Mike Schab followed up his Boston
Marathon (3:10:13) on Monday with a nearly identical time six days later: 3:10:04
(7:15 pace) at Big Sur, good for 36th overall and 10th in his age group.
Reported Schab via text: “Was a very scenic course with plenty of hills and
wind. Took it out slower than Monday (1:33:15); may not look that way but with
first 5 miles downhill.” He then excused himself from our text talk for a trip to the aquarium and followed by post-race beverages.
