Sub-5:00

We received very exciting news on the bus ride down to the MAAC meet on Saturday afternoon. My son Joey, a sophomore at FDR High School, broke 5:00 for the 1,600-meter run for the first time. This has been a goal of his -- and most high school distance runners -- since he started running track seriously a few years ago. You can see the splits from Heidi's iPhone -- a typical, vintage high school runner's race: Out hard, fade a little, kick at the end. The first word I got of his sub-5:00 clocking was from Pool, a rival coach in the Mid-Hudson Athletic League but a friend of Marist Running as he ran for us back in the 1990s. Joey's FDR team is strong and deep -- he's not even sure he will qualify to race at their MHAL Championships. He's got a young and passionate coach who is building that program from the ground up, and they will be very good for a very long time. I've told Joey that his group of athletes may look back someday as the ones that formed the foundation of future success. Go Presidents!
