Since I was at the first day of the Bucknell/Bison meet, I was not at the Vassar/April Invitational on Saturday. But judging by the texts, calls and the actual results in print, it was a really strong day for us. Among the highlights, in no particular order:
--The aforementioned 400-meter school record. Just like last year, this relay continues to progress meet by meet. I think it’s interesting that both school records have left the relay with a bit of longing for more. At Richmond, the 43.33 tied the then-existing record. At Vassar, the 43.00 almost won (second place by .01) and almost broke the 43.00 barrier. So there is still much to shoot for!
--Becca Denise seems to save her best races for the Vassar track! She PRed and won the 1,500 in an excellent time of 4:58.23. Nicely done!
--Nicole Scicolone had another great day. She won the long jump for her second consecutive meet and placed second in the 100 dash, with teammate Amanda Luccarelli following closely behind in third. Good stuff.
--In the throwing events, there was some good stuff as well. Sophomore Jake Akey had his best javelin toss (42.68 meters, 140 feet) and his highest placement in college (seventh).
--In the hammer throw, school record holder (he set the standard way back in 1977!) and Marist Track Alum competed in his neighborhood meet – he lives close to the Vassar College track in the Town of Poughkeepsie – and hurled the hammer 28.01 meters (91 feet, 11 inches). Not bad for a not-so-young guy!
