A common refrain you hear people say all the time in the summer is: “It’s not the heat. It’s the humidity!”
Well, sorry folks. Today, IT IS THE HEAT.
Talk about dumb luck: Boston will have record temperatures today for the Marathon. It will be pushing 90. What’s worse is that it will be windy! Heat and wind are the two prime enemies of marathon racers. And also, it is a short-lived heat wave, as the next few days will be much cooler.
As my mother would say: Eh. What are you gonna do?
We hope and pray for safety and uneventful finishes for our many friends and acquaintances up in Boston today. This includes our very own Luke Shane, senior cross country team member, who trained so hard and so well and for so long for this very race today. His dreams of a sub-2:40 at Boston today have probably evaporated in the Bermuda high pressure system, but we know he will give it his all.
Many of our Mid-Hudson Road Runners Club pals – Fast Tony, Coffee Krys, Big Dog, Smilin' Connie, etc. – are up in Boston as well. I have been exchanging texts with them this morning, imploring them to take sports drink early and often.
