Bucknell Bison: Day 2 results, men and women

April continues to be an unrelenting month of weather. Oh wait. We probably shouldn’t complain. We’re not running in the Boston Marathon on Monday, which will feature strong and gusty easterly winds and pouring rain throughout the day. Geez. Sunday at Bucknell was your standard issue damp and dreary day, with temperatures in the 40s and a light drizzle or cloudy or (at the end of the day) a steady drizzle turning to rain. As a result, as you’ll see, there are no splits for individual races and just a few relay splits listed here. For you numbers geeks out there, I apologize. A few highlights from today:

--Debbie Boerke with a strong second-place finish in the 400 hurdles.
--The 800-meter women with personal- or season-best times, as well as great doubles from Denise Grohn and Shea Bohan.
--A second-place finish in the 3,200-meter relay for women.
--A major breakthrough effort for Eamonn Beers in the 3,000-meter run, and a big PR from Matthew Ronan in the same event.
--Drew Burns winning his heat in the 800-meter run in a daredevil fashion, weaving in and out of traffic over the final 200 meters of the race.
-Some good, spirited instrasquad fun in the 4x400 relays, featuring some fast splits on a lousy day for sprinting. Special shout-out to Steven Rizzo who came back to anchor the “A” team in this relay, despite having done a 10-mile long run in the morning. He plugged the hole quite nicely.

Bucknell Bison: Women's results, Saturday afternoon/evening

Another great night for the women on the outdoor magic carpet, highlighted by some amazing races under the lights in the invitational 1,500.

--Emily Burns celebrated her birthday in grand style with a school record and an ECAC qualifying mark in 4:33.35. Her section went out relatively slowly, so she had to really blitz an impressive negative-split race. It was thrilling and inspiring to watch, as you can see by the birthday love she received immediately after the race.
--Denise Grohn won her section and got the ECAC mark as well (4:33.97), with a tremendous finishing kick. Also thrilling to watch! See photo above of Denise and Emily, newly minted ECAC qualifiers. In the same race, Janelle Solviletti ran a tough and aggressive race, and a PR of 4:35.12. Also in the same section, Shea Bohan ran an equally tough race with very fast early splits, as is her style, setting up a successful section and setting the tone for our team in this event.
--And the night concluded with an ECAC qualifying mark for Hayley Collins in her 10km debut (36:16.68). A strong debut for Hayley in the 25-lap race that it among the toughest in track and field. Nicely done!
--Earlier in the meet, during the insane heat, Jordan Casey ran a strong and gutsy PR in the steeplechase. She aggressively moved up throughout the field and got a top-5 finish. Neat.

Be patient for Sunday results updates, as I will be driving a van back to Marist after the meet rather than riding on the bus.

Bucknell Bison: Men's results, Saturday afternoon/evening

It was a long, strange day and evening at Christy Mathewson Memorial Stadium, perhaps our favorite outdoor track venue of them all. The afternoon portion of the meet -- the unseeded 1,500s, the steeplechase races -- were held in roiling heat, real feel temperatures in the mid to upper 80s. Even for me, a heat connoisseur, this was a bit much this early in the spring. Then, late in the afternoon, the clouds rolled in and the temperature dropped quickly, setting up decent to good conditions for the later distance races. We had a mixed bag of results for the men, highlighted by three strong debut races at 10km by Hogue, Graham and Draney in the unseeded, and an IC4A qualifying mark by Dietrich in the late night section. The weather tomorrow is shaping up to be chilly and rainy. Be patient for Sunday results updates, as I will be driving a van back to Marist after the meet rather than riding on the bus.

Racewalker Lauren Harris heading to China!

Check out this link about freshman phenom racewalker Lauren Harris, who set a personal-best time at 10,000 meters and qualified for the World Racewalking Championships in China in early May. Was going to post about this on Sunday but I couldn't find the official results. We are so proud of Lauren, as she continues to represent Marist on a national and now international stage. Very, very cool.

Colonial Relays: Wrapping it up

Here are the compiled and complete results from three days of competition at Colonial, one of our favorite meets of the year. Of course! Our mood was soured a bit on Saturday due to the horrendous weather that saw several teams fleeing Williamsburg for home and resulted in a condensed schedule (not to mention a lot of umbrellas and raw hands, feet and everything else). This meet provides us with a little bit of everything. But again, because it’s outside, it’s definitely weather dependent. We can usually count on favorable weather down there most years. Saturday was an anomaly. The weather was better back in Poughkeepsie than it was in Williamsburg. On to the next: Bucknell, which Coach Chuck has rightly dubbed our outdoor magic carpet. Hopefully, it will live up to that billing, next Saturday and Sunday. The awesome photo above is of Alyssa Lafave during her amazing debut in the 3,000 steeplechase on Friday afternoon. Thanks to Jess Howe for sharing this photo.

Colonial Relays, Saturday: Women's results, splits and 4x1500 school record!

The dismal weather did not stop our vaunted 4x1500 relay team from obliterating last year's school record by 10 seconds. Our team placed second in the meet and cracked the 19-minute barrier for the first time. We are so glad that the bad weather did not deter this deserving relay from setting the new school standard.

Colonial Relays, Saturday: Men's results and splits

How bad was the weather today? Entire TEAMS bolted town and didn't compete in the relay portion of the Colonial Relays. It was cold, windy and rainy. Not what you'd expect for Williamsburg in the spring. But alas! It is what it is. We stayed and we got our work in. Times were unspectacular at best. Here's hoping for better weather moving forward. Thanks to Jess Howe for sharing this photo of Drew Burns in the 4x1500 relay, and thanks to Kennedy and Riley for helping with the splits in the rain.

Colonial Relays, Friday: Women's results and splits

Lots of highlights for the women today:

--Danisha Craig came within .03 of the school record in the 100-meter dash, an event she rarely runs. Great job!
--Debbie Boerke got us on the board with a scoring place in the 400-meter hurdles.
--Personal- or season-best times in the 1,500 for Maria Smith, Kerry Gaye, Jordan Casey.
--An incredibly strong a positive debut at the 3km steeple for Alyssa Lafave. And when we say debut, we mean the first time she's ever raced the steeple. Alyssa shows a lot of promise in this event.

Colonial Relays, Friday: Men's results and splits

A solid day of competition on a windy and warm afternoon and early evening. Big highlights included freshman Matthew Ronan with an outstanding collegiate steeplechase debut and an 8-second PR, and Alex Hogue with a truly bizarrely run 15-second PR in the 5km. Rizz (1500) and Stack (5km) came close to PR times as well. Note: It will not be sunny and warm tomorrow.

Colonial Relays: A visit from Marthy

His name is up there, among the pantheon of track greats past and present at Marist, for all to see on the way to practice in the McCann Center. On the record board, it states that David Marthy set the school record in the 800-meter run and the 1,000-meter run in 2014. The name, events and time are up there for all to see and chase. Today, our young middle distance runners got to meet the man in person, as Marthy drove down from the Washington, DC area, where he is currently stationed in the US Army, to visit with his old team and talk track. It's gratifying to know that Marthy still follows the team and cared enough to drive several hours each way in his trusty old truck to watch his old school. Neat.

Colonial Relays: Final updated Saturday schedule

Colonial Relays, Thursday results: 3 IC4A qualifiers in 10km!

Great night for our 10km men – Spencer Johnson, Chris Rivas and Mike Kennedy – who all earned IC4A qualifying marks and personal-best times on a perfect night for a 25-lap race. It was chilly and not much wind. All three men ran machine-like consistent splits. For Spencer, it was an 8-second improvement over his previous best; for Rivas, it was an improvement over his freshman year time by more than a minute; for Kennedy, it equaled his time from IC4As last spring (technically, he was .08 slower tonight, but we’ll cut him some slack. These guys have been training hard through the challenging winter and early spring. All of them have been cranking out high mileage, hard tempo runs and even harder segment fartlek workouts – no track workouts for them! – and it worked well for them. They earned every step of it. Nicely done, men!

Update: In the original post above and below, I neglected to mention our other racers on Thursday night. That was bad form on my part. Riley Hughes did not achieve our pre-race goals in the 10km, but he gave it a game effort especially in the first half of the race, before the pace dropped off. It's a bummer because Riley works just as hard as the other guys, doing the long grueling workouts at 7:30 a.m., doubling later in the day, long runs, lifts, all of it. He'll be back at it soon. In the 3km, Elias Platanias had a bittersweet PR -- his best time but just couldn't slip under the 9:00 barrier. Joey Miller admitted before the race to being a bit flat. He competed well but the result was, well, a bit flat for him. He'll be back on Saturday for a 1,500-meter relay leg. Dan Hillman had a true "rust buster," his first race in a while. Dan's been working hard and training consistently, and this race wasn't totally indicative of his fitness level. Again, sorry for not including this information in the original post about the 10km qualifiers.

Colonial Relays: Back on the bus

For those of us (athletes, coaches) who went to Raleigh last week, this is a quick turnaround. We're back on the bus tomorrow at 5 a.m. for another long trip, this one to William and Mary for the Colonial Relays, an annual favorite. Was hoping to post the final time schedule, but it hasn't been released yet. We have athletes competing on Thursday night, Friday and Saturday. A long weekend of hopefully good weather and good performances.

Bitmoji mania

My daughter helped me create my "Bitmoji" and now I'm hooked on it. As the team is acutely aware. Here's my favorite bitmoji. My middle-aged jogging friends and I have a group text in which we try to one-up each other with different bitmojis. So yeah, I guess you could call this one a "PeteMoji."

Raleigh Relays: Wrapping it up

We are on the bus now for our long ride back home after two days at the Raleigh Relays. Here’s hoping our trip home goes much more quickly than our trip down. While I’m loathe to make excuses, our 17-hour excursion on Thursday (6 a.m. to 11 p.m.) probably had an impact on our performances at the meet on Friday. It’s also important to note that with the cancellation of Monmouth last week, this was our first meet of the outdoor track season (although, in fairness, most athletes competing this weekend probably weren’t slated to race at Monmouth). Regardless, it’s great to get our team and our program some exposure at a big meet like this, but it’s also a bummer to travel this far and not achieve many of our stated goals. But alas, we have the remainder of the season in front of us, with some excellent meets stacked up one right after the other. The outdoor track season goes by in a blur. We’ll get back to work next week, and back on another bus in a few days for yet another trip south (Colonial Relays, next Thursday/Friday/Saturday). We had positive down here: Debbie Boerke and Danisha Craig had great meets, and several women had personal-best times or splits. Speaking of splits, complete (official) splits are listed here with the composite results.

Raleigh Relays: Women's results and splits, Saturday

Sprinter Debbie Boerke capped off an excellent season-opening meet in style with her stellar ECAC qualifier in the 400-meter hurdles. Her time of 1:01.92 placed her ninth overall and was just an eyelash off her school record of 1:01.70. For the third year in a row, she punched a ticket to the ECAC Championships.

Our 3,200-meter relay team also dipped under the ECAC standard, but that relay had already qualified by virtue of their school-record run at the indoor ECAC Championships. Saturday, the team placed eighth in 9:13.99, while the B team was a few strides behind in 9:20.85. Both teams got some much needed early season work in the delightful sunshine in Raleigh. We are headed back north to early spring weather, where chilly rain awaits us in a few days.
