For as long as we live (and, really, who of us knows?), we
may never feel another weekend of warm weather in January as we did on Saturday
and Sunday – at least while we’re living in this part of the Northeast. Yowza!
Record warmth – mid-60s both days – felt so very sweet. Especially on Sunday,
as we organized the Mid-Hudson Road Runners Club’s Recover From the Holidays
50km at Norrie Point in Staatsburg one more time. Usually, we are huddled
around the fire, worried about the ice, or as in 2018 just flat-out canceling
the race due to severe winter weather. Not on Sunday. After a freakish predawn
downpour, the rest of the day was windy but delightfully warm. No fire. No
winter hats. Plenty of warm sun. My good, old friend Charlie Sprauer and I put
this together again, perhaps for the final time. The race future is in flux; my
gut feeling is that it will continue, with other running groups taking the lead
in the organization. We’ll see. For today, Charlie and I basked in the sun and
savored every second of it (yes, that's my daughter Natalie and her friends in the background, they came out to help out with traffic control in the morning).
(Also, programming
note: Spartan meet posts have been updated with splits …)
