The Winter Storm Warning for our area officially began at 1
p.m. today. It continues until 1 a.m. on Wednesday. Flurries began breaking out
during the late morning. By a little after noon, the flurries became more
consistent, into what most of us would refer to as “snow.”
This left us with a difficult decision. We were scheduled to
travel to SUNY New Paltz for our indoor track workout. We travel in the
athletic department vans. Sometimes our students drive these vans. And it was
snowing. And, a big storm is on the way. The wheels in my head started
spinning. Should we stay or should we go? It was a tough call, but we decided
to play it safe and stay on campus for some North Field hills – a LOT colder
than the fall versions of this practice … it was 19 degrees and snowing.
Could we have gone to New Paltz? Probably. The roads were
mostly wet and passable. But you never know. And those vans are top-heavy and
not the most reliable vehicles on snowy roads. We opted for the safe decision
and our sprint athletes got their work in, all bundled up as you can see.
Hopefully, the storm will be cleared out and we can dig out in enough time to
venture back to New Paltz on Wednesday for some track work.
