Save the date: Track dedication/'grand opening' on Saturday, 27 September!

More details to follow but for now? Save this date (or weekend?): Saturday, Sept 27, when the new North Field Track and Turf facility will be officially opened and dedicated. This date was picked to coincide with the Dutchess County Classic road race, which will be held on Sunday, Sept 28 (half marathon and 10k) just up the road from Marist. We hope you can make a weekend out of it.

Again, details are still in the works, but if I have my way we'll have a "victory lap" with as many alums, children, friends, etc., as possible, followed by an "Alumni Mile" race, followed by good old family fun on the turf and the track -- celebrating a facility that we at Marist have been anticipating for ... well, forEVER!

Neat.

Masters mile in NJ

Thanks to (Sean) Prinz for texting results and photos from a masters road mile in which he and (Chris) Camp both ran well. Prinz for the win in 4:48 and Camp in ninth in 5:19, "us old men still got it," was Prinz' message, along with "40-year-old milers beware, I'm coming for ya" in his breaking-the-tape picture. Neat.

Just a thought: Maybe we can host a Masters Alumni Mile on the soon-to-be-completed North Field Track?!

ECAC/IC4A: Getting here + updated time sked

What a long, strange trip ...

I95 traffic on a Friday afternoon = slow, construction, congestion.

Tornado warning in Baltimore = sky black, bus swaying on a bridge, scary stuff.

Well-timed tunnel in Baltimore = out of the tornado-ish weather, out the other side to reasonably OK weather.

Finally arrived at Fairfax, VA after about 8.5 hours of traveling.

Fortunately! As you can see below? We have a very leisurely schedule on Saturday with the meet starting even later than the original schedule. Distance races were moved back into the evening to avoid the hot weather forecasted for tomorrow. OK!

MAAC Championships: Day 2 results, men

--Amari's double-win (100/200) and MAAC Performer of the Meet was epic, a meet for the ages.
--Easton continues to prove why he is the most valuable and enduring long sprinter in program history. He is our rock, and everything stems from him. Solid open 400 in a time that would win many (previous) MAAC meets. Want more roof? Look at his 4x4 split!
--Weston! Didn't make the cut at the indoor championships, and anchors the school-record 4x4 with a monster split!
--Making the finals in most MAAC events is incredibly hard now. Three freshmen -- Joaq, Miles, Miracle -- did that and scored valuable, hard-earned points.

Entering the final event, we were sitting in sixth place, a few points ahead of Sacred Heart. Their 4x4 was fantastic, winning the meet and edging past us. I mean, our guys DID run a school record! But ... they do keep score and we're aiming for better. We're getting there. Stay tuned, these next few years could be fun.

MAAC Championships ... champions!

Full results and details to follow (at some point) on Monday, but it was a fantastic finish on a brilliantly sunny Sunday at Rider, with Amari Mathis taking home the gold in the 100 and 200 and being named most outstanding performer on the track.

And, our women's 4x800 team of Kayla Hawkins, Grace Fletcher, Sierra Fisher and Parker O'Brien took first place, following a strong second-place finish from the men's team of Joe Logan, Sean Wilson, Joaquin Bell-Andrade and Miles Chamberlain (for those keeping score at home, that relay goes sophomore-freshman-freshman-freshman).

Many other highlights from a strong weekend, we'll catch our breath and summarize when we can. Highly neat.

Purple ribbon day (at practice)

On Tuesday at practice, all event groups wore purple ribbons (and most wore white team shirts). It was a coordinated event organized by sophomore distance runner Mallory Holloway. Mal is an Athlete Ambassador for the Boomer Esiason Foundation, where she helps raise awareness for the cystic fibrosis (CF) community. According to Mal in an email to the team:

May is CF Awareness Month, and one of the ways we celebrate it is through an event called Breathe Week—a week dedicated to being active and promoting movement for a great cause.

This year, I’d love your support! On Tuesday, May 6th, I’m asking everyone to wear a purple ribbon to practice in honor of the CF community. I’ll have ribbons ready for you, and all I ask is that you wear them to practice and take a few group/individual photos that I can share with the foundation.

To keep the photos looking clean and uniform, it’d be awesome if you could wear black bottoms and your white Marist track top that day.

If you’re interested, you can also choose to make a small donation to my team to support CF research and advocacy—but that’s totally optional! Here is the link: https://fundraisers.hakuapp.com/teams/team-mallory

Correction

Please note the following comment that appeared on my previous post about the Hudson Valley half marathon and how the runners ran closer to 12.5 miles rather than the standard half-marathon distance of 13.1 miles. The course was and is USATF certified. That is a rigorous, highly controlled and accurate process. The error was NOT in the course measurement but rather in where the half marathoners were turned around – obviously well short of the intended mark. Please note the following comment from Matt Slocum, whose company (Precision Course Design) DID THEIR JOB accurately and professionally ... and, well, precisely! My classifying it as a “course measurement snafu” implied otherwise and this post (and his comment below) aims to correct that error. In addition, you will note the mea culpa on Instagram from the race director (see below) = it is very professional and honorable of him to do so. Mistakes happen and we move on. But again, the “mistake” was not by Matt Slocum and Precision Course Design!

Here's the comment:

Pete, I am the course measurer. My name is Matt Slocum, and my company is Precision Course Design. I would appreciate an immediate correction in your post. This is absolutely *not* a "course measurement snafu". The measurement and the USATF-Certification are accurate. I don't know how the course was set up on race day and can't comment on that as I was not there on race day. But it should be noted that this is not a new USATF-Certification and—if it was a problem with a "course measurement snafu" as you have described— that would have come to light in 2023 and 2024 as well. The measurement is accurate and the USATF Certification materials are accurate. It is important to make that distinction here (as almost all other runners have done in Reddit and FB posts on this event). I am sure that you understand that the USATF-Certification process is very thorough. Please be much more careful with misusing that phrase as, while I'm sure it is unintended, it is inaccurate and can affect measurer's reputation. I cannot speak for the course setup on race day as I was not there, but I can confirm that the measurement USATF-Certified course is accurate.

Hudson Valley half marathon

It was a (Marist Running) family reunion this weekend at the Hudson Valley half marathon on the Walkway. Numerous members of the Marist Running family competed the half marathon on an overcast and damp Sunday morning.

Our athletes ran well and enjoyed each other's company AND came back to reunite with their old coach and their old team, many of whom were out there early to cheer on all the runners. A very neat thing all around!

(Note on finish times: The course was USATF certified and accurate, but due to race management error on the turnaround point, the runners ran a shorter distance, likely closer to 12.5 miles. The original USATF certification was and is accurate. All half marathon runners have the option to race the 2026 event for no entry fee due to this race management error)

White coat moment

Congrats to 2024 Marist Running alum Anthony Citera for earning his "white coat" after completing Year 1 of the Physician Assistant (PA) program. The White Coat Ceremony was held on Friday afternoon at the Culinary Institute of Ameria (CIA) and I was honored to be invited to be there. Citera started the program two days (TWO DAYS) after his graduation last May and it was an intense year of schooling. He continued to run with the team most weekends, but usually under a glaze of sleep-deprived, stressed-out haze from this rigorous program. Next, he does "clinical rotations" in which he will garner real-world experience. As always, we are proud of Citera and again I was honored to be there with his family to celebrate another milestone in his life. Neat.

Had her 'Pete moment'

This is a few days late, but thanks so much for women's team captain Emily Litke for standing in like a champ to fill the coach's role at last Saturday night's Vassar meet. She noted that she 'had her Pete moment' by going across the street to the Gulf station to get a cup of coffee, and she had my ubitiquous clipboard and pencil for race splits, which she and her teammates so dutifully filled out for future reference.

It was an unusual meet, with several weather shifts and even an hourlong lightning delay! Meanwhile, 10 minutes across town, I was at Omar and Catherine's wedding, obsessively refreshing my phone to check on results and fielding texts about the weather delays. An unusual, crazy night. Thanks again to Emily and friends for keeping the distance ship afloat at our home-away-from-home track.
