Chilly, fun day at Norrie

Well. The holidays are now officially over! On Saturday, we (my good pal Charlie Sprauer and I) hosted the Recover from the Holidays (Fat Ass) 50km ultramarathon up at Norrie Point in Staatsburg. Hard to believe, but this was the 22nd running of this race since we came up with the idea way back in 1995. Several years ago, we got the bright idea to bring a fire pit to keep us warm during the many hours while the runners do their 5km laps; good move today, as the temperatures were in the high teens and it was a snowy day.

Jason Friedman of New Paltz (photo above) won the race for a record fourth time -- all odd-numbered years, 2011, 2013, 2015, and now 2017, and he did it in negative-split fashion (1:50:00/1:49:20). Jason was a top finisher at the USATF 24-hour championships last summer, and he's had a great ultra career. This race signals the end of the holiday season for me and a cue to return to the live action as the team returns to campus over the next few days, with practice resuming on Monday. Here are the results from today up at Norrie:
