Well, well, this has been quite the active winter weather pattern, huh? At my house in historic Hyde Park, about 10 minutes north of Marist, the precipitation never changed over to sleet and freezing rain. Just snow, and lots of it. By my estimation, we probably have 12-16 inches on the ground here, to go with the 3-4 inches we received in Monday's surprise attack storm. I've never really considered purchasing a snow blower, but a storm like this makes you want one, if only for an hour or two. Lots and lots of shoveling.
But hey! Let's call it cross training, right? My brothers and sisters on the sprint team frequently mock me during their team lift, goading me to "bench the bar" one of these days. Well, fast friends, today's shoveling marathon might just be good preparation for that.
Many inquiring minds have asked: "Coach, do you make your runners run outside in this?" The short answer is, "Well, no. Not really." The very serious rule is no one gets to leave campus when the roads are unsafe for driving. Several men and women would rather brave the elements than be tormented by the evil dreadmill. So yes, today there was a hearty group of women and men who did campus miles and returned no worse for the wear. The rest of the team logged many many miles on the treadmills and stationary bicycles.
The chatter is growing about another doozy of a storm for Sunday into Monday. The weather geek in me says it's too early to get excited or depressed about these prospects. The middle-aged, sore shoveler in me openly says, "No thanks, go out to sea already."
When does spring start?
