What a way to start a Saturday meet! Freshman Spencer Johnson ran a thrilling 10,000-meter race at the Wolfie Invitational at Stony Brook University, winning and qualifying for the USATF Junior Championships in the process. Thanks a million to Dan Asaro for sharing these excellent photos of Spencer powering his way to the finish line, with his excited teammates in the infield and his dutiful coach holding the stopwatch as verification. Spencer ran 32:19.34 and placed first in the Marist-heavy race. The USATF qualifying standard for the event is now 32:20.00, after being 32:45.00 for many, many years. So, Spencer was up to the challenge in a big way. In his first 10,000-meter race, three weeks ago at Monmouth, he ran 33:01.78. So this was a huge breakthrough in many ways. Congrats to Spencer on punching his ticket to Eugene in early July!
