MAAC Indoor Championships: Meet highlights, men

On the men's side, here were the highlights from the MAAC meet:

--Senior sprinter Jesse Aprile placed seventh in a highly competitive 200-meter dash and equaled his school record in the event with a time of 22.71. What a great way for Jesse to end his indoor track career. Nicely done!
--Sophomore hurdler Alex Cunningham emphatically put an end to an injury plagued indoor season by running two breakthrough, personal-best races in one night. In the preliminary round, Alex ran a personal-best time of 8.37 seconds and advanced to the final. In the final, he bettered that time to 8.30 and placed fourth overall.
--Equaling that fourth-place finish as the highest individual for us in the meet was junior captain David Marthy. In a bruising 800-meter race, David powered his way to a hard-earned fourth-place finish in 1:53.29. The time was a second off his school record, but his race was phenomenal.

This meet generally leaves us wanting for more in terms of team standings and individual performances, and tonight was no different. We continue to work hard and move forward.

MAAC Indoor Championships: Meet highlights, women

It was the usual long night at the Armory, as you can tell by the time stamp on this post. The Internet did not seem to be working on the bus ride home (at least not on my laptop). Anyway, some great highlights from tonight ...

--Junior sprinter Danielle Asaro continued her tour de force in the 60-meter dash. After setting and tying her school record at 8.11 several times, she had a breakthrough record at 8.03 in Boston two weeks ago. Tonight, she had two breakthroughs in one meet -- what a great meet at which to do it! In the preliminary round, she ran 8.00 and qualified for finals. In the finals, she ran 7.95 and placed sixth overall. Nicely done, Danielle!
--Freshman sprinter Molly Weeks eked out a school record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.04 seconds. This time bests Holly Burns' 2010 mark of 59.08 seconds by 0.04.
--Sophomore Kristen Traub was the only other individual scorer, placing fifth in the mile in 4:59.38, just missing an ECAC mark in that event. No worries, Kristen achieved the ECAC standard in the 3,000-meter run, which she will run in Boston in two weeks.

Hills in the snow, the story of our week

We did not know it was going to snow today. But of course, it did snow today. If the day ends in "day" chances are pretty good we'll get some snow around here. Undaunted, long sprinters Kyle Heubner (left) and Matt Edwards powered up the North Field/Hoop Lot hill for a solid workout. Even more amazingly, this photo was taken with my flip phone camera. Not bad quality for a soon to be scrap heaped dinosaur of a cell phone.

Hope in every morning song ...

The alarmed texts come from my dedicated alum as he tries in vain to train through this winter for a spring marathon. Mileage is suffering. Only got in 3 today. Terrible. Feel like I’m falling behind. I hear ya, bro. I feel your pain. This tired refrain of “this has been some winter, huh?” has really taken its toll and provides little consolation these days. Nobody wants to hear it anymore. You probably don’t want to read about it anymore. My text replies to our frustrated marathoner are always something to the effect of: Do what you can. Don’t worry about your weekly mileage. Get your quality days in and don’t fret the rest. You still got time. Plenty of time. I believe it. I believe it all. But as another “winter weather advisory’’ lurks in the forecast, it’s easy to get disheartened if your only option is training outside.

Not sure why, but I’ve been listening to a lot more music lately, which is why I share with you yet another song via this blog. It’s a song that’s getting a lot of air time on my favorite radio station, and its melancholy feel seems to capture our mood of late. It’s called “Morning Song” by the Avett Brothers, a lovely tune. Give it a listen if you want, and take a look at the following lyrics that seem about right for this February.

It's all right if you've finally stopped caring.
Just don't go and tell someone that does.
Even though I know there's hope in every morning song,
I have to find that melody alone.

Find hope in your morning song today. Keep trudging along. Better days are ahead.

Walking on the moon

Back in the early 1980s, when I was in college, there were few bands bigger than The Police, with their funky reggae/punk sound that we all loved. This afternoon, I found myself humming to the lilting beat of their hit "Walking on the Moon," as I meandered my way through my front yard and back yard, which is currently encased in three feet (or more!) of crusty snow. Specifically, these lyrics seemed to make the most sense to me as I comically trudged through the yard:

Giant steps are what you take. Walking on the moon.
I hope my leg don't break. Walking on the moon.

That's what it felt like. Yeah. There is a LOT of snow out there. I was doing my best to rake some of the heavy stuff off sections of our roof. I did what I could, given the limitations of my uncoordinated gait, and my certainly not well defined upper body.

This has been some winter, huh? Challenging. So very very challenging. With no room to run on the roads, I worry every minute of every day about the safety of our athletes and where they can train outside. Most of them have been limited to dreary, on-campus loops for safety. But even there, icy spots lurk.

Man. That first 65-degree day is going to feel really nice now, isn't it?
