MAAC Indoors: Men's results and splits, Day 1

The meet started with a 35-minute delay because no one could locate a starter and a starter's pistol. As a result, the women's and men's mile trials were started by a whistle and were hand-timed. You can't make this stuff up. After that, the time schedule caught up and the meet went on as planned, a competitive and intense first day. Results and splits (Armory official splits, as well as team splits provided by Saad Baig and Omar Perez) follow. Back at it later today for Day 2.

We are on the JTR buses en route to the Armory for the MAAC Indoor Championships -- on a day when we could easily be outside for the MAAC Outdoor Championships, or any other outdoor meet, for that matter. Nice weather! Too bad we'll be cooped up in the Armory the next two afternoon/evenings. Anyway! The MAAC announced its All-Academic Teams and once again our women's and men's teams led the way with the most number of selections. As always, we are proud of our student-athletes -- "student" always comes first. More updates later from the meet (and perhaps on Twitter and Snapchat, if you are so inclined). OK!

Pre-meet fun: Retro ballin' day

The women's distance crew had a "theme" day of "Retro Ballin' " today and the outfits -- and, in some cases, the hair -- were truly outrageous. Neat!

Happy Valentine's Day

They don't call him "Bromar" for nothing ... fifth-year senior Omar Perez (demerits for not wearing Marist team gear!) showed his true class by getting flowers for the "grandmas" -- fellow fifth-years Brie Vess, Annie Gould and Nicki Nesi. Very sweet, Omar. Speaking of sweet ... it sure has been nice having these guys around for an extra year. A bonus year with our favorite "grandparents" of the team! Neat.

MAAC Indoors: A new view on a championship

For the first time in championship history, the MAAC Indoor Meet will be a two-day championship with trials in all events except the relays and long distance races. It will make for a different and exciting format and we are looking forward to it. Here is the preliminary time schedule for the meet. If there are updates, I will post them here. Hope to see many family and friends in attendance either or both days. OK!

Millrose Games: Kristi Licursi (PR!) and Katie Miale in the racewalk

We are very proud of our racewalkers – senior Kristi Licursi and sophomore Katie Miale – who represented our school so well on a national stage at the Millrose Games on Saturday afternoon at the Armory in New York City. Kristi was fourth overall in a personal-best time of 7:39.62 in the mile racewalk. Katie was seventh in 8:08.15. Their race splits are below. A few of us were tracking their splits live on Bryn Gorberg's laptop at a very crowded Boston University Track and Tennis Center It’s so great that Kristi and Katie were wearing Marist singlets in a national-championship race. Nicely done, ladies!

BU Valentine: Danisha Craig zooms to awesome 400 dash record!

Congrats to junior Danisha Craig for her awe-inspiring school record in the 400-meter dash on Friday afternoon at the BU Valentine Invitational. Danisha got out hard with a 200-meter split of 27.42 seconds. At about the 300-meter mark, she got bottled up in a box, tried to pass on the inside and got tied up a bit. In the finishing stretch, she muscled her way to a strong, third-place showing in her heat and edged past teammate Debbie Boerke and onto the school record board. Nicely done, D!

Weather geek update: Thunder snow!

Pretty significant snowstorm raging right now here and probably where YOU are as well. The weather geek highlight of the day: Thunder snow at around 6 a.m. Thunder during a snowstorm is a rather rare occurrence -- in weather geek speak, has something to do with "convection" and "tightly packed isobars." Basically, it's an intense weather pattern, one that is dumping a lot of snow in a short amount of time in these parts. The good news? It's supposed to taper down very soon and very quickly. Hopefully, we'll be able to get out of town tomorrow, heading to Boston for the David Hemery/Valentine Invitational at BU. The order of events has been posted, but the time schedule has not been updated to reflect the entries. If and when that is posted, I'll share it here with you. And, we'll update with results and splits throughout the weekend. OK!

Some sort of sick joke

When I get texts on my phone, it buzzes and vibrates to let me know there's a new message (or 7) awaiting my review. When I get calls on my phone, the first few heavy strains of Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks" are played -- side note: was there a better drummer on the planet than John Bonham? Well. Here's the thing! I'm not a big fan of my cell phone right now. Oh sure, this anger is misdirected, but what the heck. It has been the bearer of many ill-fated (pun intended) messages and calls, today and the past few days:

--Stomach bug
--Head cold and congestion
--The flu
--The flu
--THE FLU
--Walking pneumonia
--Slipped on ice in morning run, banged up knee
--Fell of my ass on the way to 8 a.m. class, not pleased!
--Stomach bug
--The flu
--The flu
--THE FLU

Just a sampling of what today has brought, or wrought. Yeah. It hasn't been a great day. Actually, it has kind of sucked. Lots of illness circulating -- the Marist campus in general, or team in particular. This is not uncommon. College campuses, because they are communal areas, can be a breeding ground for such things. While that is true, I honestly cannot remember such a rampant run of illness in our program. There's never a good time for such things, but a week prior to the MAAC Indoor Championships is far from ideal. Our depth will be tested. Our depth has been tested already!

In the meantime, pass the Lysol and grab a squirt of Purell for your hands, lest you be the next one to buzz my phone with more bad news.

What's next: BU Valentine, and bad weather (not necessarily in that order)

As we round the corner toward the championship portion of the indoor track season, our next meet is the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University. Our women compete on Friday and our men compete on Saturday. But first! Winter has decided it would pay us a visit this week, according to my weather-geek analysis. Looks like a wild, rollercoaster ride of the next few days. Today (Tuesday) is supposed to start out with ice and sleet and then change to rain, which leads into crazy warm (50s!) and windy and rainy weather on Wednesday, which leads to snow on Wednesday night into Thursday (6-10 inches, according to one Web site). Whoa. More meet info to be posted once the schedule is finalized. OK!

Metro Championships: Women's 4x800 gets ECAC qualifying mark

We earned the first ECAC qualifying mark of the 2017 season with the women’s 4x800 relay clocking a near school-record time of 9:20.97, easily making the ECAC cut of 9:25.24. The school record of 9:20.43 from 2012 held up by a few ticks. Our ladies ran remarkably consistent splits, as you can see below. Coach Chuck drove them down in a van so they wouldn’t have to wait around all day, and as he said, it was worth the trip to the meet for this express purpose. Nicely done, ladies!

Winter weather? Snow problem!

Thanks to Spencer Johnson (flag hat) for sending me this photo with the subject line of "This is why we run." Also pictured are Palmer, Joe Miller and Rizzo. Why does Joe Miller look mad? Because Joe Miller ALWAYS looks mad.

Racewalkers at Millrose Games!

Coach Chuck already posted this on Twitter, but I figured I'd share the awesome news here as well: Racewalkers Kristi Licursi and Katie Miale have been accepted into the Millrose Games 1-mile racewalk national championship. Kristi raced there (Armory) last winter and it's awesome that Katie will be joining her. Very proud that Marist will be represented in this prestigious meet, which is on Saturday, February 11 at the Armory in NYC. Neat.

BU Terrier: Day 2, Tim Johnson's school record in 200-meter dash

Senior captain Tim Johnson broke his own school record in the 200-meter dash, out of lane 5 in heat 18. Tim admittedly didn't get a great start and didn't feel it was a great race for him, but it's as good as he's ever run, so good for him. Nicely done!

BU Terrier: A smart and tough 5km

Through the years, they have exasperated me with their race splits. But before I continue, it must be stated: No one is a bigger fan of grad student Annie Gould and traditional senior Bianca Luparello. If my daughter were to grow up and to be like either of them, I would be a very proud and happy father. But, facts are facts. They are our athletes, and I’m one of their coaches, and when they run long distance races, the expectation is they will run smart, tough and even-paced races. I never question the “tough” part, because these two ladies care deeply about their running and about our program. The “smart” (Bianca) and “even paced” (Annie) part of the equation, though … well, that has always been a work in progress. Work in progress. I am being nice here. Both of them know that I have had stern, post-race conversations about their races. Many times, I have agonized over typing up the post-race splits for the blog. Dammit! That last 1km (or more) needs to be faster! Too slow! Why are you slowing down so much! Wake up, will ya?

Well. I’m here to tell you: Last night, together, they both GOT IT. Was it perfect? No. It rarely is. But, it was pretty darn good. I stood in my usual spot, by the pole vault pits, and quietly told them their splits throughout the race. I mumbled “45, good” many, many times. There was a slight fade toward the end of the race – trust me, they heard about it from the old coach -- but it was oh-so slight and Bianca finished with a flourish and a major breakthrough effort. Annie had an indoor PR by a lot and her best race in a long time. They got it, and they got it good. And so, in fairness, after all the stern conversations and angst-ridden split taking, this was a wonderful, breakthrough effort for both of them. We couldn’t be happier and more proud of their effort. Nicely done, ladies!
