Fast marathons by alums at CIM!

These things are difficult to quantify but ... Sunday's California International Marathon (CIM) might have been the greatest (marathon) showing ever for Forever Foxes on a single day. Wow!

Spencer Bossi-Johnson (2:16:54, 5:14 pace) and Hayley Collins (2:37:38, 6:01 pace) both ran personal-best times -- in Hayley's case, a major breakthrough! -- and fell just shy of the newer (and MUCH tougher) Olympic Trials standards. Both are believed to be the fastest Marist Alumni times in school history.

In addition! Kevin O'Sullivan (2:21:01, 5:23 pace) and Ryan Fitzsimons (2:33:27, 5:52 pace) both ran personal-best times.

A great day to be a Running Red Fox in California!

(first) snow day at the (new) track

First storm of the (winter) season? Snow problem! We had an unidentified staff member shovel lane 1, we had our (men's) distance team utilizing the "fast" lane and ... we had our first snow angel on the track. Neat x3!

Track season begins (in a week!)

Hello. Hope you all had a reasonably OK Thanksgiving and you are (currently) enjoying a long weekend. It's a safe bet that MANY of you ran a Turkey Trot race yesterday. Back in the salad days of this blog, there would be MANY posts about Turkey Trot results. Alas, we are getting old, and (in case you haven't already noticed?) the number of posts has decreased with the years. However! We have been posting (here) for close to 20 years, so that has to count for SOMETHING!

Anyway? The 2025-2026 track journey through indoor and outdoor track seasons begins a week from today. The majority of the team will be heading down to Ocean Breeze for the Fastrack Season Opener, hosted by our good friend Nick McDonough, next Friday afternoon/evening. Some men's XC runners will have a much shorter commute, as Coach Billy is bringing them to West Point for a (flat-track) 5km -- also on Friday evening!

That will be it for the December portion of our season, with a full slate of meets in January and February for our indoor track season. Our outdoor track season follows closely on the heels of indoors, taking up the second half of March, all of April and the first half of May. Of note, we will be hosting our inaugural home track meet on Saturday, April 18, 2026. We are (quite) excited about this! We hope you will attend.

MAAC XC Championships on Saturday

Once again, the MAAC meet with by at Twin Ponds on the Farm in nearby Montgomery, on Saturday, November 1. Race times are 11a for women's 6km and 12 noon for men's 8km.

Shagging flies at North Field

One of the many, many unique and cool things about having on-campus track practice is that we share our North Field space with the wildly successful softball team. Their Field of Champions is just north of the Track at Gartland Commons. When legendary coach Joe Ausanio is pitching batting practice to his outstanding young players, the right-handed hitters launch missile-like home runs over the left-field fence ... and onto our track! Well-meaning administrators (and others) expressed concern over this. Pffft. I think it's awesome! It hasn't caused an issue with our athletes and it's fun to watch these home runs soar toward the high jump mats. If I have time, I'll even collect the bright yellow softballs and retrieve them to the softball field, until my aching left shoulder allows. Maybe one day I'll bring my baseball mitt! Again, this is Highly Neat!

Up late with (Uncle) Terry

Did you stay up to watch Game 3 of the World Series the other night? My guess = NOT. The game went 18 innings and finished at close to 3a here on the East coast, when Freddie Freeman (one of my favorite MLB players) ended it with a home run. You know who WAS up for most (but not all) of the game? Legendary track coach Terry Horton, aka "Uncle Terry" to generations of Marist track athletes. Terry made it till around 2a, before he finally conked out. Terry is a Dodgers' fan. Can you guess WHY? Because he is part of a rapidly shrinking cohort of men who remember when the Dodgers actually played in Brooklyn!

The series is now tied at 2-2, which is great because it means there will be at least two more games remaining in the MLB season. I love baseball and I don't want it to end. Of course, with my (current) sleep schedule, I'm lucky to be awake in the middle innings!

Victory Lap - More Photos

Thanks to our loyal sports information supporter Caitlin Bombassei, a sophomore at Marist, for providing these photos from Saturday's memorable day. I was texting with an alum earlier today and he called the day "surreal, amazing and memorable." Agree x3!

What's next = Paul Short Run

Our annual pilgrimage to Lehigh University for the Paul Short Run is this week - college/university races are on FRIDAY.

Men's Brown race is at 2p

Women's Brown race is at 2:45p

Hope to see you there!

Personal tour = Dan Kuffner

Dan Kuffner, Class of 1968, was back on campus on Monday morning, joined by his classmate Joe Walsh and his son. Mr. Kuffner was a member of the first track teams back in the late 1960s. He had a long and distinguished teaching career in nearby Hyde Park. Through it all, he has remained a loyal Marist Athletics supporter as a longtime Red Fox Club member. Mr. Kuffner no longer lives in the area -- he splits time between Arizona and Long Island. He very much wanted to be at the Victory Lap celebration, but his schedule wouldn't permit. I told him, as I have told many others who couldn't make it back on Saturday, that whenever he was able to make it here, I would give him a personal tour. And, that's exactly what we did on Monday morning. Showing off our (new) track = it will never get old. Neat.

Drone photos = INCREDIBLE

The following drone images were taken by Marist professor of communication Jeff Basinger. These photos are HIS property so please do not share until I get permission from him to share. There will be more. THESE ARE AWESOME PICTURES

Victory Lap = it's about the kids

Thanks to Mark Valentino for sending this picture via text. When we do another alumni gathering at the track -- WHEN, not IF -- we will focus on alumni children and do many more kids' dashes.

More REALLY GREAT drone photos coming soon.

WHAT A GREAT DAY

It was an overwhelmingly successful Saturday at the track, a day we'll never forget. There's only one "grand opening" and this one was certainly grand, as alumni, family and friends came out in full force for the Victory Lap celebration. It represented all that is so very good about our Track and Cross Country Family at Marist.

This is one day I wish I were on social media, because I heard there were a lot of neat posts. For this post, this awesome photo will have to do -- Lisa Chase and her children, and the old coach, all smiling at the end of a fulfilling day.

As more photos become available, I will post them here.

Saying "thank you" doesn't come close to encapsulating the gratitude I have for everything involving this day. It was a long time coming, and it was worth a lifetime of waiting.

If you are one of the alums who could not make it today, please know that our new track is YOUR home too, and it will be forever, and when you do eventually make it back to campus, it will be my duty and honor to give you a Personal Tour of the track.

Going home, going home
By the waterside I will rest my bones
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
To rock my soul

Victory Lap celebration on Saturday

Looking forward to what should be a great day at the track on Saturday afternoon. The event starts at 3p but if you are reading this and coming from outside the area? Stop by the track anytime and it's likely I'll be there! The schedule for the day looks (something) like this:

3p = arrive, check in, etc.

3:15p = welcome words

3:30p = Victory Lap group photo and lap

4p = Mile race in three sections (fast one first)

4:30p = Track team senior day

Post-event dinner/drinks will be at Mahoney's.

See you tomorrow or SOON.

The bricks!

What an absolute Pleasant Surprise this afternoon at the track. The BRICKS -- for large donations and personalized messages -- started to be placed at the track! The work was in progress so it is not clear how many have been placed and how many more still need to be placed. It's great that some (maybe ALL?) will be on display for Saturday's Victory Lap Celebration. Highly NEAT. Here's a sampling,

(scenes from) track practice

A loyal blog follower -- a record-setting recent graduate who now lives Far Away -- says he checks the blog frequently "when he's bored" at work. He will be (GREATLY) missed at Saturday's Victory Lap Celebration (more on that later). But I promised him to post some pictures from a (recent) practice. Admittedly, I'm not great at Taking Pictures. This was speed and power practice (this blog follower had plenty of Speed and Power in his DAY).

Like it was always THERE

Received the following text from a (very) loyal alum/blog follower:

Is it weird using the track. As in. Has it set in yet that it's there and it's not going away?

This is a great question!

Now that we are several weeks into the semester, with (already) numerous practices on the Track at Gartland Commons (the official name of the track!), my general thoughts:

--It's friggin awesome! We love it! The weather has been great!

--It's been VERY easy to get used to! As my wife said, the first time we went to see the track in the (middle of the) summer: "It's like it always belonged here."

--The energy of the team has been fantastic. They are truly thriving in this setting.

--The track is very BOUNCY and feels great.

You'll be able to witness (all this) in person on Saturday, September 27, for the Victory Lap Celebration. We have (already) topped the 100 people registration mark, with hopefully more on the way.

Look forward to seeing many of you soon.

(ok)

It was really cool to see the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run come through campus on Wednesday morning. Numerous members of our track team were on hand to cheer them on and take this photo with them. Maybe next year, the Torch Run can take a lap around the Track at Gartland Commons!

PLEASE register for Victory Lap celebration!

I know this is redundant, but the College Advancement office (which is organizing this event) is urging me to urge you all to REGISTER IN ADVANCE for the Victory Lap Celebration on Saturday, September 27. This is not "my" event. If you show up on the day of and expect to sweet-talk your way into the Open/Alumni Mile without paying, it won't work. Also, if you expect a commemorative T-shirt by coming up to me and saying, "C'mon Pete, hook me up" ... it also won't work.

The early registration numbers are lower than they expected. So PLEASE register if you plan on attending. It would mean a lot to me if there are MANY alums (and others) who register in advance. It's gonna be a great day, and if you are reading this, then I definitely want you there!

Here's the link (to register) again = see you soon!

Register now for Victory Lap celebration!

In case you missed it on email, Instagram or elsewhere? Here's the link to register for the Alumni Mile race and/or a really cool T-shirt in conjunction with the Victory Lap Celebration on Saturday, September 27. Please register and support the event, and our team!

Ladies at Millbrook (dirt roads)

For most of these ladies, it was their first time at the Millbrook Dirt Roads. Cool and damp morning, prior to a very wet day. Good that the run was out of the way early. OK.

On the track

First full workout on the Track at Gartland Commons this morning, featuring some of the men (above) and Coach Billy in charge (below). Very exciting stuff. Images poached from Instagram (no, I'm not on Instagram, they were texted to me)

Preseason 2025: Mills Hills photo dump

Thanks to Coach Alisha for taking these (awesome) pictures from Day 1 of preseason XC practice at the Staatsburgh State Historic Site (Mills Hills) on Thursday morning.

Another year ...

Preseason XC camp begins with athletes arriving on Wednesday afternoon. And away we go!

The first practice, at the Mills Hills, will be Thursday morning.

Yes, I know, we have this beautiful new track and all. But tradition is tradition. Plus, it IS cross country season!

Will we be on the North Field Track more frequently this fall than in previous XC seasons? I think the short answer to that is YES. We have a home now. Might as well use it!

But long runs, tempo runs, tempo workouts, etc., will still be the domain of previously used venues. The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail in New Paltz. The FDR/Cator loop. Farm Lane. Minnewaska. Vassar Farm, where we will host our season-opening XC meet on Saturday, August 30.

The beginning of XC preseason marks the start of a 9-month journey through cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. It's a long grind and the train has to leave the station and head on down the tracks. Tomorrow's the day. Away we go ...

Painted silver light

Ned and me

In the screaming silence
I try to lose myself
There is no hiding place
No hiding place

Alert, long-time readers know that every August, I travel to nearby Pittsfield, MA, to participate in the Sweltering Summer 8-Hour Ultra. This race is held on a 0.3553-mile dirt “track” (it’s not really a track, just an odd-shaped dirt path) at Clapp Park in Pittsfield.

Through random doggedness – I have remained alive and ambulatory, my car has not broken down on the way to the Berkshires and I’m stubborn enough to sign up every year – I remain one of only two people to have participated in all 13 Swelterings (fun fact: the first year, it was a 6-hour, before race director and good pal Benn Griffin changed it to the current 8-hour format in 2014).

Because of the aforementioned, random doggedness, I also happen to be the cumulative laps/mile leader – although that lead diminishes each year with the dogged (and faster) pursuit of fellow Clappster Bill Odendahl.

Benn keeps track of the overall laps and mileage. Entering 2025, I was 111 laps (39.3 miles) away from the 500-mile medallion/coin. Based on my “training’’ (really, I should call it “activity”), I knew achieving this would be a big push.

For the past year (maybe more), my activities have consisted of 70 percent walking and 30 percent running/jogging. The walking is not a stroll but not particularly brisk either – about 3.5 miles per hour. The runs are whatever I can handle with my loyal running partners/friends – usually 5-7 miles at roughly 9:00-9:30 pace. I generally do something every day, logging more walking mileage in the summer, when I have a bit more time.

I’m neither proud nor ashamed of my activity level. It is what it is. The calculus that I had to face, entering Saturday’s ultra, was this: Would this level of training allow me to cover nearly 40 miles on a warm summer day on a dusty dirt path with virtually no shade? Is this even possible?

I tried. Lord knows, I tried. At the four-hour mark, I was ahead of pace, with 61 laps logged. But I was pushing it hard. I was mostly running, with a few walking spells, and always staying on the track. Under the beating sun, as morning turned to midday turned to afternoon.

That 70 walk/30 jog ratio from my daily activity log? I was blowing that out of the water, more like 80 jog/20 walk. Soon, I would come to realize, this was a grave mistake and a severe miscalculation on my part. A post-race analysis of my splits – and, more importantly, my alarmingly high heart rate – told the story of a kamikaze mission.

During the middle stages of the race, I would play games in my head. “OK. Let’s push this mile, comfortably hard, and then walk for half a lap.” I would push the mile, breathing heavy, not all out but pretty damn hard. My wrist would buzz and I’d look at my watch. “10:34. F**k. That’s as fast as I can go?!?!”

And then I did the math. And I got scared.

Somewhere around this time, the song “Painted Silver Light” by Gov’t Mule (my favorite band) came into my earbuds. I had never really listened to the lyrics of this bluesy song. As I was sweating and squinting in the midday sun, desperately trying to figure out how to hang on and get to around 40 miles, I heard these lyrics:

In the screaming silence
I try to lose myself
There is no hiding place
No hiding place

And I thought: Yeah. That’s perfect. That’s about right.

And then? It started to fall apart. My relatively max effort elicited slower and slower running miles, until the running miles became run/walk and then walk. And then, with about 80 minutes to go, I realized I had zero chance of getting that 500-mile coin this year.

And so, I did what comes most naturally to me these days. I walked.

But something strangely terrible happened as I walked around the track. It felt just as hard as my hardest running pace. I was really struggling, even just at my normal 3.5-mph. I tried to have a conversation with an old college friend who stopped by, and I was soon out of breath, and getting a little dizzy.

People noticed. Byron Lane, a fantastic ultra guy who I’ve known for years, said: “Pete, you don’t look good, you should go sit in the shade.”

About five minutes later, I knew he was correct.

I stumbled into a port-o-potty, sweaty and shivering, and … well, it was not pretty, on both ends of the digestive spectrum, let’s just say that. I stumbled through one final lap – 101 laps, 10 shy of the goal, with only 5 minutes of the 8 hours remaining, so I had used up as much time and energy as humanly possible. And then, finally, I sat. I sat in the shade. For a really long time.

For about an hour, every time I went to stand up, waves of nausea overcame me. Eventually, I recovered. A few hours later, I got my appetite back, devoured some pizza and eventually some ice cream, showered and went to bed.

Good friend Ned Kenyon and his wife Eva took good care of me during that post-race haze in the shade. Ned is a proud Forever Fox (note his old-school Alumni Racing Team singlet), now proudly retired from the NYPD. He is an ultra guy, and he covered more than 40 miles on this day – his longest distance ever. Ned did great!

As he helped load stuff back into the car, Ned said, “yeah Pete, I’m not coming back here next year.”

Ned’s a trail ultra guy and the relentless repetitiveness of the perpetually sunny Clapp laps got to him. Hell, it got to ALL of us on Saturday. I love Ned like a son and a brother combined, and his and Eva’s reflexive care for the old coach will not soon be forgotten.

God willing, I’ll be back in Pittsfield next summer. Why not? Where else would I be! My approach will be different and will more closely align with my activity level. There will be a lot more walking and a lot less running and no vision of 40 miles or anything close to that. To run 40 miles, you have to be a runner in training, and I’m only that for a small fraction of the time.

So, that’s that. One final race report until I go into hibernation for another year. Thanks for following along!

A mile PR ... at age 39!

This is a few weeks overdue, but congrats to Forever Fox Lisa (D'Aniello) Chase for running a lifetime PR of 4:50 for the mile at the Hudson Mile, a road race in Hudson, NY. Lisa, 39, would have crushed the competition in the soon-to-be masters field. She was second overall in the open division. This photo was poached from her Strava account = not sure if it was from THIS actual race, but it gives you an idea of how strong she is running, nearly 20 years after her collegiate career. Highly neat (and very fast)!

Prinz, 2nd at Brooklyn Mile!

Congrats to Forever Fox Sean Prinz (pictured above, kicking with ferocity!) who placed second in the masters division of the Brooklyn Mile, running 4:44. Here is the link to the results.

And here is Prinz' post-race text!

Morning Pete -- a real thriller in the masters race at the Brooklyn mile yesterday -- 2:27 thru 800 and then 2:16 home--I got kicked down with 50m to go -- brutal --  4:44 official time--but def happy with silver! Fifth avenue mile is next! Stay well, coach --

'Dawn' of a new era

This was the view on my morning walk at the North Field track. The Canadian wildfire smoke made for a hazy sunrise over the north end of campus. Forgive me if I post many sunrise photos from the track. It's a new view, and it's one that will never get old as we enter a new era of our program. Neat.

Mark the date: Saturday, September 27!

Yes, I know, I've already mentioned it a few times: The Victory Lap celebration of the new track (which, by the way, is friggin AWESOME) is all set for Saturday, September 27. A few more details since the last post (please note = all these details are tentative and will be confirmed in the coming days/weeks):

--The event will be from 3p to 5p on Saturday. If you arrive early and if you stay late ... that's OK! We'll be there -- before, during and after.

The "program" will consist of three main elements:

--1-The actual Victory Lap, where we all walk a lap of the new track (did I mention? it's AWESOME!). Hopefully, this will be chronicled with drone (or other) footage. At the very least! Many selfies and social media posts that I will likely not see!

--2-Kids dash races, modeled after the Mid-Hudson Road Runners Club summer track series (which, if we have our way, will be held on the North Field Track next summer!). It will be broken up by age groups, and dashes will range from 50 meters (for the youngest) and 200 meters (for the oldest).

--3-The Alumni Mile, which is open to all. Already, there is Much Anticipation (and perhaps even a little Trash Talking) for this race. It will be a mile, none of this 1,600 nonsense. We'll likely have pre-registration, so we have an idea of how many runners we'll have. We'll definitely have separate races by gender, and possibly by age group, again depending on the number of entries.

Aside from those three "formal" elements, mostly we'll just encourage you to hang out and soak in the somewhat surreal fact that we have an outdoor track on the Marist campus.

Also, we may host something informal off-campus for those who want to continue to hang out + those who want to get a pre-race dinner in advance of Sunday's Dutchess County Classic road race.

There are more things in the works for this day, but for now that's the update. Please come back to celebrate. Bring kids, family, friends, anyone! And please, spread the word to one and all. Neat.

Staff lap

The new North Field track is getting closer to completion, as you can SEE from this selfie taken from Coach Billy's phone with Coach Alisha and me in there as well. Not all the lines (and markings) have been completed. But it's getting MUCH closer to being a finished product. Neat.
