Yeah. It was a beautiful, summer-like day down at Rider on Saturday. Sunny, breeze and very WARM. Not ideal conditions for some of the track events, but it sure felt good for everyone lounging in the sun. When we departed the Lawrenceville, NJ, campus in the late afternoon, the temperature reading in the van was 82 glorious, sunny degrees. By the time we arrived back at Marist just a few hours later, it was 40 miserable, cold, rainy degrees. In other words? It was Poughkeepsie, NY, in March. There is volatile weather, but a 40-plus degree temperature drop, on a 2.5-hour ride? Come on, man.
While we were over at the Vassar track for practice, an alert team member sent me this photo from the north end of the Marist campus, site of our future track. Construction is moving along! Those big light poles? They are for the track and turf facility! It's getting real, people, and it's exciting. Neat!
Spring has sprung? Depends on who you ask and how you dress for it! Out at the (Vassar) track yesterday, freshman Kevin Cannon (Cannon) was stripped down and ready for his interval workout. His old coach was layered up and ready to bark words of encouragement. Same day, different outfits.
In one of the more remarkable twists in recents memory, at last Sunday's school-record 4x400 relay at ECACs, the third leg from our Marist team (Julie Cristinzio) received the baton and almost the identical (get it?) time as the third leg for the St. Joseph's team (Stephanie Cristinzio). Yes. They are sisters. Yes. They are twin sisters. Yes. They are identical twin sisters! While they didn't run identical relay splits, both ran their fastest 400-meter splits ever (57.91 for Stephanie and 59.86 for Julie). In Julie's case, it was almost two seconds faster than she has ever run and along with the other breakthrough efforts by our ladies made for a perfect ending to a wonderful indoor season. Neat.
