Spring training. Spring optional.
As we concluded our first full week of outdoor track oriented training for all but the IC4A DMR team, we are still impatiently awaiting the arrival of spring. With overnight temperatures headed below zero and potential for another major snowfall on Monday, spring remains a fuzzy rumor in these parts. Undaunted, our athletes plug away in the cold and/or on the treadmill. Old Man Winter hangs on as we exit February and head toward March with a lion's roar of bitter cold air. Spring officially begins in three weeks. Yeah. Prove it.

Flint saves the day in the Q
Most of the time, when I am posting about alumni here on the blog it has to do with their excellent post-collegiate racing exploits. Without a doubt, at some point in the coming months/years, I fully expect to be posting about Marist Running Alum Matt Flint, who is one of the greatest XC/distance men to ever walk through the front doors of the McCann Center. But today, thanks to an assist from Marist Running Alum Lisa D'Aniello who sent me this info via e-mail, we share with you this information about a life-saving good deed performed by Mr. Flint. Here is the news that was posted on the Queensbury Union Free School District Web site, under the headline "QHS alumnus saves the day:
On Wednesday, February 12, Matthew Flint was in the middle school cafeteria – a place where he had eaten many lunches as a student. Only this time, he was a substitute teacher “on duty” as a cafeteria monitor. Normally a fairly routine duty, Wednesday became anything but routine for Flint.
During seventh-grade lunch, Flint was approached by a student who could not breathe and was choking. Flint recognized the problem and immediately began to administer the Heimlich maneuver. As district officials later learned, the seventh-grader had a grape lodged in his esophagus.
While the Heimlich maneuver did not completely dislodge the grape, it did shift it enough for the boy to take partial, struggling breaths. The student was immediately taken to school nurse Colleen Geczy, who administered emergency procedures and called 911. The student was transported to Glens Falls Hospital emergency room where the grape was removed from his esophagus.
Flint graduated from Queensbury High School in 2008. He was a standout cross country runner and a member of the 2005, 2006 and 2007 state championship teams. He continued his running career at Division I Marist College, competing in cross country and indoor/outdoor track. Flint graduated from Marist in 2012 with a teaching degree in Biology.
Nicely done, Flint!

What's next: IC4A/ECAC Championships
For the majority of our program.the indoor track season is over and training for
outdoor track has begun in earnest. However, we will be bringing a small
contingent of athletes up to Boston next weekend (March 8-9) for the IC4A/ECAC
Championships. For the IC4A (men’s) meet, we will be racing our distance medley
relay team. For the ECAC (women’s) meet, Kristen Traub will be racing in the
3,000-meter run.
Middle
distance runner David Marthy, who qualified in the 800-meter run and the
1,000-meter run (and who was an integral member of our IC4A-qualifying DMR),
cannot compete at IC4As due to a military commitment. David is heavily involved
in the ROTC program at Marist, and that weekend he has a commitment that he has
to attend to, so he will be sorely missed up in Boston. With the indoor season essentially
over with the exception of those two races, I thought it would be a good time
to post the updated school record lists for indoor track. It is our hope that
our IC4A/ECAC athletes will challenge the marks in their events, but for now as
we look toward outdoors, I felt it was a good time to post the records. I will do that in the next few posts ...

MAAC Indoor Championships: Men's results, with splits and comments
As stated in the previous post about the women's meet, this championship always seems to be a bit of a disappointment for us. One number that comes out of the meet was the remarkably tough and gutsy race by David Marthy in the 800. He ran most of the race in lane 2; it was physical, as is often the nature of indoor mid-distance racing. But here's the kicker: He ran a NEGATIVE SPLIT, which is virtually unheard of at this distance. Here are the numbers ...

MAAC Indoor Championships: Women's results, with splits and comments
With the exception of the aforementioned highlights -- if I could, I would like to add Molly Weeks' monster 400-meter split and leg in the DMR as a meet highlight, wow! -- I think it's safe to classify this meet as a disappointment. Oftentimes, this championship is just that for our program. Rather than analyze why, we would rather focus on working hard and looking forward. And that's what we plan on doing. Here are the numbers ...
