Happy New Year: Winter storm Hercules to flex its muscles!

Weather seems to be dominating the news in the early moments of 2014. We are expecting a big snowstorm over the next few days. This will be followed by bitter cold temperatures. And then more snow and ice on Monday. And then more cold on Tuesday. Stop me if you've heard this story before. Snow. Cold. Wind. In January. In Poughkeepsie. Yeah, it happens. It's called winter!

If you are in the area and you are a glutton for punishment, please join me and my Mid-Hudson Road Runners Club friends up at Norrie Point in Staatsburg for the Recover from the Holidays (Fat Ass) 50km race on Saturday morning. Charlie Sprauer and I have put this race on every year since 1996. This year, weather forecasters are calling for temperatures below zero and wind chill values at dangerous levels -- on Saturday morning! Lovely!!!! We will be fighting the elements the best we can, with a fire pit. I will get the fire burning at 7 a.m., and hope to keep it going all day.

Get the shovels -- and jumper cables? -- ready.
