Paul Short: Men's results

Tight compression for the men, with 1-5 spread of 25.6 seconds (1-6 was just 26.4 seconds, too!). That's the good news. Now, that tight pack needs to get a bit faster in the coming weeks. Something to work on, for sure! Times were significantly slower than 2022, due to sloppier conditions.

Be safe. Be grateful.

(this was) originally posted on my Substack blog (petecolaizzo.substack.com)

It started out like so many other beautifully awesome cross country practices.

--A jovial, free-spirited van ride, filled with music, conversation, laughter.
--Arrive at a cherished, mid-Hudson Valley running venue – miles and miles of forgiving dirt trails.
--Lovely early-autumn weather – partial sunshine, warm but not too hot, light breeze.
--Quick bathroom stops, pre-run drills and instructions, and away we go.

Very fit young ladies head out for a steady-state run on a traffic-free rail trail. All is well with the world.

Until it isn’t.

Until a dangerous road crossing, where a car was driving too fast around a sharp curve and not noticing the fast runners going from one part of the dirt to the other. Tires screech. Voices screech. The dream afternoon turns into a nightmare.

“It happened so fast” was the common refrain from the ladies in the lead group, one of whom got clipped in the heel by the car. Police and rescue vehicles arrive. An ambulance trip to the hospital. An X-ray shows no fracture, just some bruises.

The x-ray cannot reveal the emotional bruises of such an occurrence.

This rendezvous has a happier ending than most car-runner encounters.

The van ride home was far more somber. The runners were stunned silent, what-ifs furiously channeling through their brains. Wise coaches reminded them: “No one did anything wrong. It was an accident. Accidents happen.”

Aside from being a dodged disaster, of which we are grateful, this practice – and now, this post – serves as stark reminders of the following:

--The danger lurking out there every time we run in areas shared with cars. This describes most runs by most readers of this space.
--How every day and every run is a gift to be cherished. “It happened so fast” happens so fast – when we least expect it.

Long after the memory of an afternoon gone sideways fades, we hope – for our team and for you readers – that these reminders linger for a long time to come.

Be safe. And be grateful. Two things we strive to do. Every day.

Manhattan meet: Men's results

Clearly, our competition in the MAAC is very strong (this year). Our top-3 finishers ran in a tight pack, led by a breakthrough performance by Jeremy Mbogo. The rest of the pack needs to step up and move up. A lot of work to do in the next 6 weeks, leading up to the MAAC meet on this same course.

I didn't write this.

This, my friends, is freaky. I went into ChatGPT and typed "write a Marist Running blog post" and here's what it spit out. Seems like AI might be paying as much (or more!) attention to my material than my athletes!

Title: Mastering the Art of Consistency: A Guide to Sustainable Running

Introduction:

Welcome to the Marist Running blog! Whether you're a seasoned athlete or just starting out on your running journey, one thing is certain: consistency is the key to progress. In this post, we'll delve into the importance of consistency in your training regimen and provide practical tips to help you maintain a sustainable running routine.

The Power of Consistency:

Consistency is the cornerstone of any successful running program. It's not about pushing yourself to the limit every day, but rather about showing up regularly and gradually building your endurance. Here's why consistency matters:

  1. Adaptation: Your body adapts to the demands you place on it. By running regularly, you signal to your body that it needs to become more efficient at this activity.
  2. Injury Prevention: Gradual progression and regular rest days reduce the risk of overuse injuries. Consistency allows your body to adapt without pushing it too hard, too fast.
  3. Mental Toughness: Establishing a routine builds mental fortitude. It instills a sense of discipline, helping you push through challenging workouts and stay committed to your goals.
  4. Continuous Improvement: Small, consistent efforts over time yield significant results. It's the cumulative effect of your training that leads to breakthroughs and personal bests.

Tips for Maintaining Consistency:

  1. Set Realistic Goals: Define clear, achievable objectives for your running journey. Whether it's completing a 5k, improving your pace, or increasing your weekly mileage, having tangible targets provides direction.
  2. Create a Flexible Schedule: Develop a training plan that fits your lifestyle. Consider your work commitments, family responsibilities, and other obligations to ensure your schedule is manageable.
  3. Prioritize Recovery: Rest days are just as important as your training days. They allow your body to repair and grow stronger. Incorporate active recovery techniques like stretching, foam rolling, and yoga.
  4. Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how you feel during and after each run. If you're experiencing excessive fatigue or discomfort, it's crucial to adjust your intensity or take an extra rest day.
  5. Variety is Key: Mix up your workouts to prevent monotony and overuse injuries. Incorporate a combination of long runs, speedwork, hill training, and cross-training activities like cycling or swimming.
  6. Nutrition and Hydration: Proper fueling is essential for sustained energy and recovery. Focus on a balanced diet rich in carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats. Stay well-hydrated to optimize performance.
  7. Stay Accountable: Join a running group, partner with a friend, or use a fitness app to track your progress. Being part of a community or having a support system can provide motivation and accountability.
  8. Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Recognizing your progress will help maintain your motivation and reinforce the habit of consistency.

Conclusion:

Consistency is the secret ingredient that turns aspirations into accomplishments. By implementing these tips and making a commitment to show up for yourself, you'll not only become a stronger runner but also cultivate a healthier, more resilient mindset. Embrace the journey, trust the process, and remember that every step counts!

Happy running, Marist athletes! 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️

LIU meet: Men's results

 LIU Fall Festival

Notes:

--It was hot. Crazy hot. And humid. Comparisons to Paul Short and Fairfield meets in the past that featured athletes heading to the Emergency Room? Accurate

--Plenty of LI area alums and friends in attendance. Great to see!

--For the men, it was 12 freshmen that raced. That's it. No upperclass runners. Just first-years. A neat experiment.

--Times were greatly impacted by the heat and humidity. Of course! For all men racing? This was an 8km XC personal-best!

Home meet: Women's results

A fantastic start for our ladies.

From GoRedFoxes.com:
"I am really proud of how tough this group of women ran today. We held out many of our key upperclassmen from last year and I really wanted to see what this young group could do. They showed up in a big way and set the tone for the rest of the season. We have lot of work in front of us and we know it won't be easy to achieve our goals, but today was a good step towards making that possible," said women's head coach Chuck Williams.
