Track! Here are a few LINKS ...
The excitement -- the buzz -- continues about the proposed new track facility at North Field, which we are hoping to be ready for spring 2025. For those keeping score, that's less than 1.5 years from now! The Poughkeepsie Journal did a nice piece on the topic, and here is the link to that story by our pal Stephen Haynes. And, I would be remiss to not include a link to DONATE to the fundraising campaign to get this project to the finish line. Please consider donating here. And stay tuned throughout 2024 for track alumni initiatives to continue to generate excitement for this really neat project.

Spencer's San Diego TC team = National Champions!
Congratulations to Marist Running alum Spencer Johnson (second from right) and his San Diego Track Club teammates for winning the USATF club national cross country championships on Saturday in Talahassee, FL! The team scored 73 points to edge out second-place Minnesota Distance Elite in a field of 25 teams. Spencer placed 11th overall and was third man for SDTC, finishing the 10km course in 31:49.2. SDTC's top three men were ninth (Steven Martinez, 31:43.3), 10th (Jacob Mitchem, 31:46.7) and 11th (Spencer, 31:49.2). Nicely done! Also there was Marist Running alum Dietrich Mosel, racing for the Central Park TC team (Deet was 66th overall in 33:31.8). Ryan Kutch of CPTC was second overall in 30:55.4 - Ryan's brother Patrick Kutch is a Marist Running alum. Congrats to all. Neat!

Hotel haircut
Thanks to junior middle distance runner Neel Viswanathan (aka Neel Vis-cuts) for his outstanding haircutting skills -- this is already well-known on the team -- on his old coach here in our hotel in Natick, MA, in advance of tomorrow's season-opener at Boston University. Neel called this "the easiest haircut" -- and really, who could argue with this logic? There wasn't much to work with! In classic infomercial style, I gave a frowny face (before) and a smiley face (after) -- the only thing missing was the black-and-white/before imagery with somber music, followed by a quick switch to color and upbeat mood (if you've watched enough bad before/after commercials, you know what I mean). Neel did fine work, and it was much overdue. Don't worry, my guy Sal (my regular barber) will still be in the heavy rotation. For tonight, in the hotel, Neel did great work. Neat. (Thanks to Gabe Rodriguez for taking the photos)

Indoor track, 2023-2024
The 2023-2024 indoor track season begins with two December meets. On Saturday, we will be at Boston University for the season opener meet there. This meet has grown in popularity during the past several years -- especially in the distance events. We always cherish an opportunity for meets on the Magic Carpet, which has been newly renovated. Neat. Next Friday (8 Dec), we will be at Ocean Breeze for a meet hosted by Wagner College. Then, we will be off from meets for a little more than a month before resuming the 2024 portion of the schedule. We look forward to "playing track" this winter!

(Some) Turkey Trot results/photos
Nice way to brighten (my) Thanksgiving morning with these photos from various Turkey Trot races in the Northeast. In the above photo! These four young men placed in the top 10 of the Nissequogue River State Park 5k on Long Island = Daniel Czop third in 15:31.74, Brendan Dearie, sixth in 16:21.71, Anthony Citera, seventh in 16:34.13, Patrick Kutch, 10th in 16:58.38. In Flemington, NJ, it was Ian Wiesinger, second overall in 16:35; John Ignacz, second in age group in 17:07 and Gary Wiesinger (the "old guy") a very impressive second in age group in 23:29, after only a week of training following a foot injury. At the Port Washington Turkey Trot on Long Island, Marist Running alums Ellie Davis and Bianca Luparello went 1-2 (sorry, no photo of them!). Nicely done to one and all.

Philadelphia Marathon: (Some) great results!
Marist Running Alums were well represented at Sunday’s Philadelphia Marathon:
--Graham
Strzelecki (Class of 2021) had an outstanding debut at the distance, placing 69th
overall and ninth in his age group with a time of 2:35:07. First half split =
1:16:00. Nicely done.
--Mike Guarascio (Mike G!) was sixth in the 40-44 and notched a two-minute PR and negative split with a time of 2:41:36. First half split = 1:21:02, second half split = 1:20:34. Very neat. Mike G also ran into '06 alum Andrea Ditrani volunteering at the finish. She works at Neumann University teaching physical therapy. See photo below.
--Our
old pal Lurch (“Todd Coulson”) had an admirable finish at 3:48:58, and send the
following text afterwards: “FYI: my watch
time was 3:38. I stopped in the med tent at mile 23 for 15 minutes, legs locked
up again. But this year I was able to run the entire course unlike last year,
just have to figure out why the cramping keeps happening to me. I felt like I
ran pretty conservative this year, I stayed with the 320 pace group for most of
the race, I fell off a little bit at my 20 to 23, but I felt really good until
the stinger hit.”

One direction = down!
Scene from track practice today (courtesy of Coach Billy's phone) = two sprinters, captain Easton Eberwein and freshman Weston LaBreque, are splayed out on the track after another torturous workout from the Coach Billy catalog. Yes, I'm well aware that our men are named Easton and Weston, and those directional names could very well be handing off to each other on a 4x400 relay. Neat! For this moment in time, the direction was neither East(on) nor West(on) but rather down and out. OK!

MAAC XC Championships: Men's results
The men had their strongest race of the season, closing the gap on MAAC rival schools. It was a wild and exciting battle behind perennial powerhouse Iona. While we're not satisfied with 5th place, we are certainly pleased with the efforts exhibited today. Two of our true freshmen earned All Rookie honors. Neat.

What's next = MAAC XC Championships
The first of three MAAC Championships of the academic year in our sport -- cross country -- will be held on Saturday at Twin Ponds at the Farm in Montgomery (Orange County). Manhattan College is the host. But really, we (Marist) are the closest school to the Farm, a mere 43 minutes away! One coach from a prominent MAAC powerhouse team texted me a few weeks ago, saying that his team would be "staying in Poughkeepsie" on the night before the meet. I replied: "Neat! So are we!" They may even do their team dinner at Cosimo's across from the Marist campus. Also neat! Anyway? The long-range weather forecast looks like it will be unseasonably mild this week, leading into Saturday's races. The women's 6km race is at 11a; the men's 8km race is at 12 noon. Hope to see (some of) you there!

Been a long time ...
Most days, you just go through the motions. Think about it. Think about all you miss by not truly paying attention. Randomly, one day last week at the track at practice, a place I’ve been hundreds and hundreds of times through the years, I stopped and caught a glimpse of an image in my horizon and I scrambled to take a picture with my crappy old Android phone. This is the picture, and this is the story it tells: A coaching lifer, Terry Horton, still coaching and caring and showing up every day, at age 75, more than 50 years after he started. This, too, is highly neat.
Ashokan view
Last Sunday, while the women’s XC team was getting ready for their truly outstanding showing at the University of Vermont, the men’s XC team requested a special long-run venue = Ashokan Reservoir in Ulster County. They agreed to an earlier departure (7:30a) and it was worth the slight sleep deprivation! It was a crisp and cool morning and the men enjoyed a great long run (along with a few recruits!) and followed it up with an awesome group photo in front of the reservoir. Highly neat.
