Yale Springtime Invitational: Women's results and splits

During the 3,000-meter run, as the wind whipped and ominous dark clouds loomed – in other words, typical weather for this Yale meet – I was bemoaning to several team members the fact that the weather generally is poor for this meet, and the general vibe is one of a pre-championship letdown for all of us. We’ve been coming to this meet each and every year, and most years we walk away wondering why the weather sucked and the performances weren’t what we were hoping for, all the while eyeing the league championship meet in a matter of days. And then, as if on cue to prove the old man wrong (a daily occurrence, these days) … Gianna Tedeschi busted through all this old-coach negativity with a blazing kick in the 3,000-meter run, a breakthrough time of 9:59.92, which punches her ticket to the ECAC Championships in two weeks and the USATF Junior Championships in June. Wow! So much for the Yale negativity, huh? As you can see by the splits, Gianna has to bust out that kick due to midrace slow laps that were no fault of her own. The race just slowed down. She picked it up enough at the end to get the job done and we are thrilled for her. She’s a tough young runner and she earned the qualifying marks with that toughness.

Speaking of tough: How about senior Jenna Robinson’s hard-to-fathom double of 800 and 3km? She had a great 800 and a gutsy 3km. Neat. Jill Laliberte had a strong 800 as well, and overall the meet was indeed a fine tuneup for next week’s MAAC Championships. Upon boarding the warm bus after yet another chilly day, I announced (to myself, mostly) that it was time to stow away the winter cap. The weather’s gonna warm up this week, and we’re hoping for equally hot performances at the MAAC meet and beyond.

Yale Springtime Invitational: Men's results and splits

Not a ton of highlights here today, just some good pre-championship work. Excellent effort from 400 hurdler Sean Patterson, who had a season best and seems to be rounding into championship form. And great to get our 4x100 relay together for the first time. Onto MAACs. ..

Sybil, my mistress

Since shortly after I met her more than 25 years ago, I have been madly in love with my wife Heidi. That dedicated passion remains today, nearly 23 years into our marriage. But alas, I have an admission to make. Yes. That’s right. I have another woman in my life. Oh! This is TERRIBLE. No worries, though. Fortunately, for the health of my marriage, as well as to appease you judgmental folks out in the blogosphere, my mistress – a legitimate Revolutionary War heroine named Sybil – has been dead for more than 175 years. Phew. I feel a lot better now. So. Who is this Sybil anyway? Glad you asked! Sybil Ludington is someone you probably have never heard of – but should! You’ve heard of Paul Revere, right? Well, Sybil was the female Paul Revere, only better! OK. Here’s the story, off the top of my head, without Googling it (feel free to look it up, it’s good stuff). Back in April of 1777, the British were invading Danbury, CT. Sybil’s father, Col. Henry Ludington, needed to gather his militiamen to save and secure this critical area. Not wanting to leave his command post, the colonel dispatched his oldest child, 16-year-old Sybil to round up the men. Sybil mounted her horse Star and galloped off into the cold and damp night. She had to dodge evil bandits along the way, but she did her job, banging her stick and yelling to the men gathered around the Dutchess (now Putnam) County countryside to report at once to Col. Ludington’s house. Danbury was burning! It needed to be saved! Sybil and Star completed the task wonderfully. Danbury was saved. We won the war. The United States of America would survive and thrive. Sybil. A legit American hero you’ve never heard of. You’re welcome. (Each of my children had to listen to me read them the children’s book version of this story, so they know it well!)

OK. What the heck does this have to do with anything? Well. The Taconic Road Runners, a great group, has put on a 50km (31-mile) originally called the Sybil Ludington Historical Run. The course roughly retraces the path of Sybil’s midnight ride in April 1777. This was the 40th year of Sybil (all locals and ultra folks now simply refer to the race as Sybil). For the first time, this year the race was a two-loop 25km ultra. Race director (and good friend) Bob Sweeney maintained the integrity of the original Sybil course – that is, it’s rural, it’s on roads that Sybil and Star galloped, and it’s hilly as holy heck. Bob is a multiple winner of Sybil and he drives in from Colorado each April to direct this race. How cool is that? Sybil was my first ultra, way back in 1995. I did it again in 1996, but haven’t since then, because, well, April’s pretty busy in these parts now, isn’t it? This year, I was somehow able to clear my schedule for Saturday, the day of the 40th Sybil. The 25km option was appealing as a convenient shortcut, and that was the original plan. Ah, but the spirit of my old, dead lady lured me into two loops. If you do Sybil, you gotta go the distance! And so, I slogged through the hills (Bob said more than 2,000 feet of climbing in all, seemingly on each loop). In particular, Gipsy Trail Road seemed to never end. I won’t bore you with the details, but with a judicious mix of jogging and power walking, I finished comfortably. As I said, Sybil was my first ultra, so she’ll always have a special place in my heart. Doing Sybil launched me into several decades of rather questionable decisions with regard to ultras – an odd fixation on fixed-time races, 40 miles for my 40th birthday, 50 miles for my 50th birthday, etc. There’s only one first time, however, and Sybil was my first ultra. And given the unique back story, and the fact that it’s a simple 45-minute drive from my house, and Bob comes back for it every year, it’ll always be special. And it certainly was neat to go back once more and tackle the Sybil hills. It was great to see Bob as well (note bad selfie, with me squinting through post-run sweat-encrusted eyes). He remains a loyal follower and supporter of this program, and it’s pretty awesome that he comes back every year to organize Sybil. Who knows when I’ll get back there to do Sybil again? If I wait another 22 years, I may be joining Sybil in the ground (speaking of which … isn’t it odd that her first name was misspelled at her gravesite?). For this day, anyway, it was fun to reacquaint myself with my long-lost mistress. Sybil.

Penn Relays: Saturday's racewalk result

Congratulations to junior racewalker Katie Miale for her outstanding personal-best time at Penn Relays on Saturday morning. She went out at a crazy, breakneck pace (sub-8:00 for the first mile!) but hung on for a great PR. Katie has battled numerous issues in training through the late winter and spring, so this PR was gratifying and displays how much grit, determination and hard work she has put in. Great for her. Up next is her primary racewalking distance, 20km, next weekend. Also, kudos to Coach Chuck for his extra dedication to the program this weekend. Chuck drove down to Philly for the Thursday night women’s distance races, drove back to northern New Jersey on Thursday night, stayed in a hotel, worked a full day of teaching on Friday, and then got Katie and drove her back down to Philly on Friday night. Then up early to Franklin Field for Katie’s excellent race, and back to Marist this afternoon. And tomorrow morning? On a bus to Yale for a full day at THAT meet. That’s a lot of driving and a lot of track in a few days and it shows Chuck’s ironclad loyalty to the program. Not many part-time coaches would do all that. Nicely done. To both of them. Today!

Penn Relays: Women's results and splits

Being an older coach gives you the benefit of having a lot of stories to tell. If you are honest and have a good memory, most of them are actually true stories! And so the story went like this, last week at practice, about a steeplechase racer long ago at Penn Relays (who now happens to coach track at Vassar College): “Oh man. Justin Harris. He was in great shape. Great shape! But his form on this night. Bad. Oh so bad! Two-footed landings in the water. Ugly. But man, he ran tough and hard between the barriers. Surging each one. Boom. School record. 9:09. Moral of the story: A great steeple doesn’t have to be pretty; it has to be tough.” Fast forward to 2018. Jordan Casey. Penn Relays steeple. Jordan is in great shape. She’s a very proficient hurdler. But the Penn race is a battle. Her form suffered. It wasn’t as ugly at Jut’s long-ago race, but it wasn’t as pretty and efficient as even her most recent steeple, in the oddly stifling heat at Bucknell two weeks ago. She battled. She grinded it out between the barriers, which weren’t pretty. And oh man, she had a marvelous kick. And voila! A PR time by nearly 13 seconds and the coveted ECAC qualifier. She was pumped after the race, and so was Coach Chuck (as you can SEE)! Very thrilled for her. Freshman Hayley Collins battled gamely in the 5,000, hung tough for a strong outdoor PR. And earlier in the day – way earlier, like at 9:50 a.m.! – Coach Terry Horton brought Debbie Boerke down for the 400-meter hurdle race. It wasn’t a great time for her, but as Terry said, 62.88 as an off day is pretty good.

Penn Relays: Men's results and splits

Weather for distance night was perfect for fast racing. Although the results for the men were imperfect, the effort was great on both parts. In the 5km, Dietrich Mosel went out in a blistering early pace – he was in the fastest section – and held on for the second fastest time of his collegiate career and one of the fastest 5km times ever run by a Marist man at Penn. This was his best race of the outdoor season and portends potential great things in the final two meets of his career – 5km at MAACs, 10km at IC4As. As a coach, trying to find the balance of seeding aggressively and honestly is a delicate one, and the aggressive seed put Dietrich in the fastest section, whereas the middle of the three sections may have been a better placement for him; I’ll take the blame on that one. Ah well, no regrets, he gave it a great effort. Similarly did Chris Rivas, who struggled mightily in the 10km. A balky hamstring issue affected him midrace, but he battled through it. He was rolling at the proper pace through 5km, but he lost contact with a chase pack, which is always crucial to success in the long race. This was a great experience for Chris, and he gets one more crack at the distance in two weeks at IC4As.

A bright moment for Dark Cloud Dan

We like to call him Dark Cloud Dan, a rather dubious nickname for a great and loyal team member – junior distance runner Dan Hillman. Sadly, Dark Cloud Dan’s nickname is hard-earned, due to a variety of ailments, injuries and misfortunes that have befallen him through the years. When you think of the phrase, “Life’s not fair,” you think of Hillman and his collegiate running career to date. This is a kid who does everything right in terms of process and work ethic, but always seems to be set back by … something, anything! Well, sometimes the sun has to shine on Dark Cloud Dan, and that was Sunday. A beautiful, sunny day for a long run. But alas, Dan couldn’t make practice on this sun-splashed morning, and for once the reason for missing a run was positive and uplifting! Dan took part in a ceremony celebrating his entrance into a prestigious honor society for psychology – Psi Chi. Not only that, Dan was elected vice president of the Marist chapter of Psi Chi for the next school year. “Honored to be a part of such a close group working with faculty,’’ Dan texted. “It was a cool milestone in my psychology experience and allows for some neat opportunities for research, scholarships and conferences.” We are proud of all that Dan does; although we joke about the Dark Cloud, he is shining light in our program, and we’re proud he is part of our team.

Family day at Stony Brook

In a rare convergence at a track meet, our entire family got to spend a few minutes together. Joey, a freshman at Stony Brook, went to the dining hall to fetch his old man a cup of coffee. Natalie's holding the clipboard and James is dressed like summer, sporting his favorite Stony Brook hat. Good stuff.

Stony Brook Wolfie: Women's results and splits

A great day at Stony Brook for our women. The above photo of our very unlikely 4x400 relay tells the story of some fast racers: Jenna Robinson led off the 4x400, but the bigger news was her nearly one-minute PR in the 5,000-meter run earlier in the day. She went from never having broken 19 minutes to nearly breaking 18 minutes (18:03.11, second place). Wow! Denise Grohn anchored the 4x400, but the much better news was her monster breakthrough in the 3,000-meter run, where she qualified for ECACs and was one second off the school record, with her stellar time of 9:55.31 (third place). Wow, wow! And hey. Let’s think about THIS: Who in their right mind does a 5k/4x400 double or 3k/4x400 double? These two track beasts, that’s who. So very cool to see! The other two 4x400 legs – Kerry Gaye and Emily Burns – had strong races in their open events as well; Kerry PRed in the 1,500 and Emily had her best 800 time in quite some time. So yeah, ladies, flex those muscles, because you flexed them on the track today. Nicely done!

A few other highlights: Debbie Boerke continued her stellar outdoor season with a victory in the 400-meter hurdles in yet another ECAC qualifying mark of 1:02.23. Fallon Quigley had her best day of high jumping in quite some time, placing second with a leap of 1.55 meters, just off her school record of 1.57 meters. Overall, it was a great day in the chilly/breezy sun at Stony Brook.

Stony Brook Wolfie: Men's results and splits

The Wolfie Invitational at Stony Brook University is always one of our favorite meets of the year. We have great alumni and family support and attendance. The Stony Brook track staff members are friends of ours, and they put on a high quality meet. The weather is usually favorable. This year, an added treat was that the meet venue, the Stony Brook track, is about a three-minute walk from my son Joey’s dorm room (he’s a freshman at Stony Brook). And! My wife and two younger kids made the trek down for the morning and early afternoon to see Joey and the running Red Foxes.

On the track, it was a pretty good day too! Freshman Matthew Ronan stole the show by winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a 9:43.90, a whopping 10-second PR from his race at Colonial Relays two weeks ago. Matt went out hard (harder than I would have liked!) but he made it stick and ran a tremendous race. Very proud of him!

The 800-meter run provided numerous highlights for us. Junior Drew Burns just missed the IC4A mark but placed a strong third in 1:54.42. Brian Henderson (fifth place, 1:55.88) and freshman Connor St. Germain (sixth place, 1:56.73) followed closely behind in personal-best times. Freshman Cole Ziskind (2:00.25) also notched a personal-best in the event. Freshman James Moehringer ran a personal-best time in the 1,500-meter run, placing sixth in 4:01.37. He was on pace for his first ever sub-4:00, but the last lap was tough due to a strong wind. Solid effort from Moe nonetheless. Junior Eamonn Beers had a solid debut at 5,000 meters, breaking 16:00 for his first time in the longer race.

Princeton Larry Ellis meet: Women's results and splits

Coach Chuck brought two of our athletes down to Princeton tonight to chase ECAC qualifying marks in the 1,500-meter run. While Janelle Solviletti and Shea Bohan fell short of the ECAC standard of 4:34.24, both raced extremely well – Janelle won her section and Shea was third in a tightly-packed section (first three places separated by 0.63 seconds). Chuck reported that it was cold and breezy down there. I just got home from my son’s Little League game in Salt Point – it was 41 degrees and the wind was whipping. Will spring ever arrive? Geez.

What's next: Stony Brook Wolfie meet

Our next meet is Saturday at Stony Brook University for the annual Wolfie Invitational. This meet has evolved into a very strong mid-season outdoor track meet, and it is one on the schedule that we look forward to every year. This year, there is a new reason to look forward to it: Our son Joey is a freshman at Stony Brook, and his dorm is a short walk from the track, so we'll be excited to see him at the meet. Many of our current and former team members are from Long Island, and we anticipate a strong showing of families and alumni. We'll have two 10x10 pop-up tents, and our "tailgate" is usually the most prolific of the meet. Again, we look forward to it. Running events start at 11 a.m. Here's an order of events on the track:

4x100
1500M
110Hurdles
100 Hurdles

100 M

Miss the bus

My daughter missed the bus this morning. As I was pulling out of the driveway at 7:03 a.m., prepared to speed down to the bus stop at the end of our short dead-end road at Smokey and the Bandit pace, the bus pulled up on Route 9G, stopped briefly, and continued on its way. Without Natalie. I pounded my fist on the steering wheel. Dang it. Another morning I gotta schlep this girl up to the high school. This was NOT in my morning blueprint!

We started north on Route 9G, I switched the radio to NPR. Natalie didn’t go to switch it to her “hit” music stations, the ones that make me grit my teeth in angst. I started asking her about school. What tests or quizzes did she have today? How’d that geometry test go yesterday? What’s your thoughts on junior year schedule? Weighing the risks/rewards of AP, honors or regents classes. We had a good conversation. A good back and forth. Her face was not buried in her phone. My mind was not wandering to the NPR story. She was not listening to the music I don’t like. We had a conversation for a good solid 8 minutes. I dropped her off at school, wished her luck at the track meet later. As I was driving back home, I realized that in moments like these, I enjoyed taking my daughter to school. Her missing the bus threw my morning schedule into a tizzy, but that’s OK. There are blessings in everything, even a not-well-planned morning for a sometimes moody 15-year-old girl.

Soon enough, there won’t be a bus to miss. Soon enough, she may be driving herself to school. Soon enough, she’ll be off at college near or far. Soon enough, there won’t be high school courses to discuss. Soon enough, she’ll blossom into adulthood, like our soon-to-be graduating seniors here at Marist, ones who not so long ago were procrastinating 15-year-old girls themselves. And soon enough, these quiet, soft car ride conversations will fade into memory, like the bus she missed, into the rearview mirror of our lives. So next time -- maybe as soon as tomorrow! -- perhaps I won’t be pounding my fist on the steering wheel. Next time, missing the bus once more will make the beginning of my day a little bit brighter. Especially if there’s a warm coffee in the cup holder.

Boston Marathon: Nicely soaked

Very proud of our Marist alums who battled it out in epic bad conditions today in Boston. Shout-out to all of them, starting with Deedy (!), who ran tremendously well out there. Our leading ladies, Kara Lights and Kelley Posch, killed it out there as well. Kell PRed by exactly two minutes. How do you PR in this nonsense? Others listed include Marist’s Dean of Admission Kent Rinehart, who dialed back the intensity in the slop and had a great run, and long sprinter Nate Lungarini, who gamely finished the race.

Here are some notes and photos from texts …

Deedy: Everything considered, happy with how today went. Loved the race.

Kell: Easily the worst I’ve ever been a part of. Numb feet for four miles, then I warmed up. But it was thrashing rain at times and never lightened up. Nevertheless it was legendary!! I’ll never forget cresting heartbreak and a bout of monsoon rains came smashing down. It was borderline celebratory!

Kent: What a day. Winds were relentless. By far the worst conditions that I’ve experienced in my 10 marathons. Rain came down in sheets. I decided in mile 2 to make this a fun run. I had an absolute blast from Hopkinton to Boston. So much fun for my first Boston.

Marist alum results, with net time (half marathon split) and age place
Pat Deedy 3:00:15 (1:28:41) 1427
Kara Lightowler 3:12:27 (1:31:35) 326
Kelley Posch 3:24:37 (1:41:11) 1052
Kent Rinehart 3:30:59 (1:43:56) 1167
Nate Lungarini 3:53:34 (1:34:15) 3533

Bucknell Bison: Day 2 results, men and women

April continues to be an unrelenting month of weather. Oh wait. We probably shouldn’t complain. We’re not running in the Boston Marathon on Monday, which will feature strong and gusty easterly winds and pouring rain throughout the day. Geez. Sunday at Bucknell was your standard issue damp and dreary day, with temperatures in the 40s and a light drizzle or cloudy or (at the end of the day) a steady drizzle turning to rain. As a result, as you’ll see, there are no splits for individual races and just a few relay splits listed here. For you numbers geeks out there, I apologize. A few highlights from today:

--Debbie Boerke with a strong second-place finish in the 400 hurdles.
--The 800-meter women with personal- or season-best times, as well as great doubles from Denise Grohn and Shea Bohan.
--A second-place finish in the 3,200-meter relay for women.
--A major breakthrough effort for Eamonn Beers in the 3,000-meter run, and a big PR from Matthew Ronan in the same event.
--Drew Burns winning his heat in the 800-meter run in a daredevil fashion, weaving in and out of traffic over the final 200 meters of the race.
-Some good, spirited instrasquad fun in the 4x400 relays, featuring some fast splits on a lousy day for sprinting. Special shout-out to Steven Rizzo who came back to anchor the “A” team in this relay, despite having done a 10-mile long run in the morning. He plugged the hole quite nicely.

Bucknell Bison: Women's results, Saturday afternoon/evening

Another great night for the women on the outdoor magic carpet, highlighted by some amazing races under the lights in the invitational 1,500.

--Emily Burns celebrated her birthday in grand style with a school record and an ECAC qualifying mark in 4:33.35. Her section went out relatively slowly, so she had to really blitz an impressive negative-split race. It was thrilling and inspiring to watch, as you can see by the birthday love she received immediately after the race.
--Denise Grohn won her section and got the ECAC mark as well (4:33.97), with a tremendous finishing kick. Also thrilling to watch! See photo above of Denise and Emily, newly minted ECAC qualifiers. In the same race, Janelle Solviletti ran a tough and aggressive race, and a PR of 4:35.12. Also in the same section, Shea Bohan ran an equally tough race with very fast early splits, as is her style, setting up a successful section and setting the tone for our team in this event.
--And the night concluded with an ECAC qualifying mark for Hayley Collins in her 10km debut (36:16.68). A strong debut for Hayley in the 25-lap race that it among the toughest in track and field. Nicely done!
--Earlier in the meet, during the insane heat, Jordan Casey ran a strong and gutsy PR in the steeplechase. She aggressively moved up throughout the field and got a top-5 finish. Neat.

Be patient for Sunday results updates, as I will be driving a van back to Marist after the meet rather than riding on the bus.

Bucknell Bison: Men's results, Saturday afternoon/evening

It was a long, strange day and evening at Christy Mathewson Memorial Stadium, perhaps our favorite outdoor track venue of them all. The afternoon portion of the meet -- the unseeded 1,500s, the steeplechase races -- were held in roiling heat, real feel temperatures in the mid to upper 80s. Even for me, a heat connoisseur, this was a bit much this early in the spring. Then, late in the afternoon, the clouds rolled in and the temperature dropped quickly, setting up decent to good conditions for the later distance races. We had a mixed bag of results for the men, highlighted by three strong debut races at 10km by Hogue, Graham and Draney in the unseeded, and an IC4A qualifying mark by Dietrich in the late night section. The weather tomorrow is shaping up to be chilly and rainy. Be patient for Sunday results updates, as I will be driving a van back to Marist after the meet rather than riding on the bus.

Racewalker Lauren Harris heading to China!

Check out this link about freshman phenom racewalker Lauren Harris, who set a personal-best time at 10,000 meters and qualified for the World Racewalking Championships in China in early May. Was going to post about this on Sunday but I couldn't find the official results. We are so proud of Lauren, as she continues to represent Marist on a national and now international stage. Very, very cool.

Colonial Relays: Wrapping it up

Here are the compiled and complete results from three days of competition at Colonial, one of our favorite meets of the year. Of course! Our mood was soured a bit on Saturday due to the horrendous weather that saw several teams fleeing Williamsburg for home and resulted in a condensed schedule (not to mention a lot of umbrellas and raw hands, feet and everything else). This meet provides us with a little bit of everything. But again, because it’s outside, it’s definitely weather dependent. We can usually count on favorable weather down there most years. Saturday was an anomaly. The weather was better back in Poughkeepsie than it was in Williamsburg. On to the next: Bucknell, which Coach Chuck has rightly dubbed our outdoor magic carpet. Hopefully, it will live up to that billing, next Saturday and Sunday. The awesome photo above is of Alyssa Lafave during her amazing debut in the 3,000 steeplechase on Friday afternoon. Thanks to Jess Howe for sharing this photo.
