A far cry from Hawaii

The wind and the cold were relentless out there today at the Vassar track. But hey. It could have been worse. A LOT worse. The winter storm and heavy snow that generated all that wind stayed well off to our east. Lots of snow on Cape Cod and the Islands. Here in eastern New York, we just had cold (what else is new) and high winds on a sunny day.

With the air temperature in the 30s and the wind chill in the teens, imagine our surprise to have actual SPECTATORS at our hasty track practice today. Turns out it was the parents of freshman distance runner Jaime Durso, here in Poughkeepsie all the way from their home in Hawaii. They have East Coast roots, so the cold and wind was not all that foreign to them. But as I told them, Jaime picked one helluva winter to decide to leave her tropical paradise home for her first year in college. Yikes! Great to see the Dursos, who said they are loyal blog followers. I would have taken photos of our visitors, but my fingers were frozen under my gloves.
