Blizzard schmizzard

Well, well. At least in the mid-Hudson Valley, the Blizzard of 2015 was a bust. Oh sure, we got snow, but probably about 6 inches when it's all said and done, maybe less in certain areas. It's still snowing out there now, but not too bad. Blogosphere readers to the east of us -- eastern Long Island, eastern Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, etc. -- well, it's a different story. You got a lot of snow! But around here, it was, as Hild texted, a "snowverrated" storm.

Now, before you go ahead and trash the weather forecasters for blowing another storm forecast, understand that they did NOT blow the forecast. The nor'easter/blizzard did happen as they had predicted. It's just that the storm wobbled (they like to use that term) about 75 miles east of the projected path. For those who were closely paying attention to the weather forecasters, that's EXACTLY WHAT THEY SAID! To paraphrase, if you were listening, you probably heard this phraseology: "If the storm tracks even 50 miles east or west, the storm total amounts will vary greatly." And! That's exactly what happened! So, our pal Luke Shane over in Connecticut? He reported a fancy 20 inches earlier today. That sucks for him. If the wobble wobbled our way, the tone of this post would be quite different. And, I probably would not have been able to take the above photo of the not-so-hostile takeover of the Fitness Center by our team. The other photo (dubbed "treadmill track takeover") was taken by Jake Hensler. This is what we do when it snows and when we do not have access to an indoor track.

Community service at West Point

Thanks to senior Alexia Santiago for sharing these photos and this information, and for continuing to be a team leader (along with several others) in our community service initiatives.

On Sunday, January 25, a total of 21 Marist Track and Field members drove to the United States Military Academy at West Point with Marist softball, their “sister” team, to assist Wreaths Across America collect previously distributed holiday wreaths from 3,500 graves. And after, we all visited the West Point Museum.

Team members in attendance: Spencer Johnson, Ken Walshak, Saad Baig, Stefan Morton, Zach Toner, Charlie Asaro, Tyler Schwarz, Josh Siegel, Danielle Asaro, Jennifer Horner, Tim Johnson, Molly Weeks, Meaghan Gillespie, Cassandra Iacono, Kelly Nash, Joe Cafaro , Alex Cunningham , Brandon Heard, Fallon Quigley, Nate Lungarini, Alexia Santiago.

Racewalk victory: Kristi Licursi opens strong

Sophomore racewalker Kristi Licursi, who made USATF Juniors last year in the event, opened up her 2015 season with a victory at the USATF Adirondack All Comers meet at Union College in Schenectady last Friday night. The walk distance was 1,500 meters, but there appeared to be some confusion with the finish line, as Kristi explained in a text:

"The sheet my lap counter gave me says 7:42 but they messed up my finish because they didn't tell me where the exact finish was, so I stopped before the line and then was told to keep going so my real time was faster but that is what they recorded when I crossed the line!" Phew. Got that?

In defense of Kristi, the Union indoor track is a bit challenging. I recall racing there back in the 1980s. If it's the same facility now as then (and, judging by what I found at the Union web site, it is), it's a square track, probably in the 150- to 160-meter range, which makes start and finish areas for all distances rather chaotic. As this winter storm approaches, oh how we would love to have such a sub-standard facility on which to train (you know, like the one we used to have)!

Great job, Kristi, and here's hoping for bigger and better racewalking results as the semester progresses.

Winter Storm: Practice decision

The Winter Storm Warning for our area officially began at 1 p.m. today. It continues until 1 a.m. on Wednesday. Flurries began breaking out during the late morning. By a little after noon, the flurries became more consistent, into what most of us would refer to as “snow.”

This left us with a difficult decision. We were scheduled to travel to SUNY New Paltz for our indoor track workout. We travel in the athletic department vans. Sometimes our students drive these vans. And it was snowing. And, a big storm is on the way. The wheels in my head started spinning. Should we stay or should we go? It was a tough call, but we decided to play it safe and stay on campus for some North Field hills – a LOT colder than the fall versions of this practice … it was 19 degrees and snowing.

Could we have gone to New Paltz? Probably. The roads were mostly wet and passable. But you never know. And those vans are top-heavy and not the most reliable vehicles on snowy roads. We opted for the safe decision and our sprint athletes got their work in, all bundled up as you can see. Hopefully, the storm will be cleared out and we can dig out in enough time to venture back to New Paltz on Wednesday for some track work.

Winter storm: Early warning

Friday meets like the past two weeks afford me as a track coach the rare luxury of a weekend “off” from competition. It’s odd to get a glimpse of how the rest of the world spends their Saturdays. Such was the case a few days ago. After we swept away what will seem like mere nuisance snow (about 4-6 inches in these parts) compared to what’s coming, Heidi and I went to Sears to shop for new appliances. (Side note: We are totally renovating our kitchen and laundry room; our house is in utter disarray; but, the finished product should be worth the wait; if interested in the progress, I suggest you “friend” Heidi on Facebook as she has been chronicling the work on a near daily basis).

While shopping for said appliances, I got a text from Hild. Nothing unusual there, he is a regular texting correspondent. He knows full well that I am a Certified Weather Geek. However, even he took me by surprise with the text, time stamped 2:26 p.m.: “Apparently we could get 3-5 feet of snow next week?’’ My curt reply, as I was sifting through information on Kenmore dishwashers, was “Not that I’m aware.”

Word did not really start circulating about this storm till midday Sunday. Now, the hype is out of control, and probably with good reason. They’re talking feet and not inches with this storm. Hild was ahead of the curve on this one. It pains me to admit when Hild is right (which is most of the time). Here we go again.

Be safe in the storm. Here’s hoping that you and/or loved ones do not lose power. Happy shoveling.

Metro Team Challenge: Women's results and splits

Kristen Traub was the big highlight, with her awesome ECAC qualifier and strong anchor leg of the DMR. There were several other notable performances:

--Senior captain Danielle Asaro's season-best in the 60 dash of 8.00 despite dealing with hamstring issue all week. Nicely done!
--Sophomore Jenn Horner with a fabulous double -- 800 and 4x400.
--Senior Siobhan Pokorney with a personal-best high jump -- she's having a great season!

Thanks to Nicki Nesi with excellent assistance with results and splits.
