We revived a tradition after about a decade layoff today, 12 hours of running from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The women paired up and did a 1-mile campus loop, each runner doing between 8 and 10 miles throughout the day.
The men paired up and did 30-minute runs, all doing at least two runs and several doing three runs.
With 10 new men and 12 new women on the team, this was an excellent way to do some team bonding, and in my case, try to learn some of the new girls' names. I'm doing my best.
Everyone had a good time as I3 and I4 served as gracious hosts. The weather was good, no rain!
This also served as our primary Disney fundraiser. Any alumni and friends reading this that would like to contribute to our rather hefty pricetag to bring 20 men and 20 women to Disney for the MAAC championships can send checks made to Marist College to the address below:

Bowdoin Park on Wednesday
This morning, we (re)introduced the team to our official Home Course: Bowdoin Park.
We did a hill fartlek workout on the course, followed by some roughly 1k repeats on the flats/trails around the soccer fields/finish area.
It was early, but the team was peppy and ran well. And very little complaining about the hills.
We'll be going to Bowdoin more this year.
Back to Minnewaska on Thursday, followed by a return to the 12-hour relay tradition on Friday.

Fast kid with an old man

Check out the photo with this post from a 5k trail run recently in Beacon -- Dennings Point 5k. Joey was the youngest finisher at age 8 and he dragged his old man through the course in 27:32. Part of the course was single-track trails. Nothing too tough, but not a flat road, for sure.
Pretty respectable effort for the young guy. And he ran negative splits and had a kick!
It was fun running with him, but I came to the realization that his "race" pace is about the same as my "easy" training pace. This means that, in a few years if he keeps at it, his "race" pace and my "race" pace may be one in the same! How weird is that?
Joey enjoyed running around at the Ogden hills workout and is looking forward to attending other practices this fall.
Enjoy the day.
Minnewaska
Today's preseason destination was a perennial favorite: Minnewaska State Park Preserve west of New Paltz. Returning athletes love this trip. New runners learn to love it.
This year, we are planning a second Minnewaska adventure -- on Thursday morning. Any and all alumni and friends of the program are welcome to join us. We'll be there as soon as the park opens, at 9 a.m.
We'll do the usual 9- and 11-mile loops.
The weather today was absolutely perfect. It's always a few degrees cooler up at Minnewaska and this morning was no different. The team dipped into the lake afterwards.
The highlight/lowlight of that was when a pretty big and scary water snake slithered around unaware team members, until those of us out of the water pointed it out. Conor, being Conor, splashed menacingly at the snake, no doubt pissing it off -- and he pissed off the lifeguards, too! Ah, it's nice to have the guys back ...

Save the date: Friday, September 5
To all (any?) alumni reading this blog:
On Friday, September 5th, we will be hosting our first home meet at Bowdoin Park in 11 years. It will be a small meet. The only teams attending, other than your favorite Running Red Foxes, are:
St. Peter's
NYU (D3 National Champions, 2007!)
We will run the 5km course for men and women. A low-key, time-trial type meet.
After the meet (4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. race times), we will have a retirement celebration party at Bowdoin for outgoing women's coach Phil Kelly. Befitting our style (Phil and I), it will not be fancy: Pizzas, Gatorade, water, etc.
Please spread the word as all alums are encouraged and invited to attend this event.
Please get the news going via email, facebook, texting, etc.
Or even better: Direct your friends to This Fancy Blog!
Take care and thanks for reading.

Ogden Hills revisited
Hello again!
Remember the blog?
Well, I took a few months off. So sue me. Dock me my pay, already. Now it's time to make up for lost ground, hopefully, with more posts.
Now that the team is back in town, we're all energized by each other's company. It is a fun and serious group, and we saw that this afternoon at Ogden Mills with our annual, season-opening workout.
The "van talk" today brought up this fancy blog and why it hasn't been updated in months. So, for you blog fans out there on the team and beyond, I'll try to revive it a bit with team news and updates and the usual.
Obviously, as we get near and around meet times, I will use the blog as a way to summarize and analyze our performances.
Today's workout was excellent despite the heat. It was great to see the men's and women's teams practicing together, and that will happen with more frequency in the coming days, weeks and months.
We are heading into a new and exciting time in our program's history, and I am looking forward to it.
So after a summer of slacking off in my coaching duties -- what the heck, it is basically a 7-day-a-week job for about 9 months! -- I'm back at it and I will try to blog on a semi-regular basis.
Hopefully someone out there is still reading.
Have an excellent evening, everyone ...

A fine sendoff for Coach Phil; great job by the team
Great to see my good friend and coaching compadre of 17 years, Phil Kelly, get honored by the MAAC and by our teams at the awards banquet on Sunday at Rider. Well-deserved, and it was a great way to end his career.
In the "nice guys finish last" category: This was our best MAAC meet, as a team, in a long, long time. We scored in every event in which we were entered with one exception (and in that one exception, the guys ran tremendous!). There were highlights everywhere; I'll try to summarize them here:
-- Max Carow getting it done in the pole vault. School record, third-place medal. After a spring in which he battled illness and no place to practice. Max at MAACs: He got it done!
-- The Thrower Guys -- James and Dan -- scoring in the discus. James PRed. Again, great job on minimal practice.
-- Shaun Kippins scoring in both jumps and the 4x1, despite an ankle and heel that were ready to explode and finally did at the end of the TJ. Thanks for sacrificing in your final college meet, Kips!
-- Mike Cocca having perhaps the finest sprinting day in Marist Track history, scoring in the 100 and 200 in PR times and near school records, and anchoring a medal-winning 4x100 relay. Nice job, captain.
-- Colin Johnson (he of 4:59 and 2:13 high school PRs) breaking 2:00 in the 800 and winning the second section. Phenomenal season, my friend.
-- Nick Webster with perhaps the single most impressive performance of the meet: 9:23 in the steeple, 16-second PR, third-place medal, an EASY Jr National qualifier and closing in on IC4As. Something to shoot for next spring. We're heading for Columbus, Webs!
-- Tim Keegan with a stunning distance double, getting a hard-earned 6th in the 10k in a PR of 31:20 -- hanging with the Iona pack through a blazing 15:22 first 5k and hanging tough over the second half. Then, on tired legs, scoring another hard-earned point in the 5k on Sunday. Great season!
-- Dumb and Dumber (Vess and Shelley) were smart and smarter -- and tough and tougher -- in the 1500. In a typically tactical race, they kept their cool and kicked with a frenzy (59 seconds for Vess, 61 for Conor) and got two scoring spots (3rd and 5th) in a very competitive race.
-- Girma getting a hard-earned, tactical third place in the 5k, closing the last 800m in 2:08! Thanks to Rolek for doing the dirty work by breaking up the jogging, and sacrificing his own race in the process.
-- Ricky (Greg Masto, high jump) and John Keenan (400 IH) having some fun in "off" events and scoring points. Greg, if you can high jump 5-9 the day after a tough steeple, maybe we can get you up to 6-0 fresh next year! Why not?
-- Countless other PRs among the non-scorers -- Emerel lopping more than 1 minute off his 10k comes to mind, but there were others as well.
Did I forget someone? Probably, and if so I am sorry. You guys should be proud of your efforts and it is an honor to say that I coach you all.
Lastly, thanks to the seniors for all their efforts through the years. You clearly enjoyed your final road trip with the team, and I've enjoyed every minute with you boys.
Check back for meet splits in a while, when I come up for air.
While the majority of the season is finished, we still have a lot of spring left in us:
-- A few guys chasing some PRs on Saturday at Icahn
-- Vess, Rolek and Girma at IC4As on 5.16 in Princeton
-- A school-record three (3!) Jr National qualifiers, in Columbus, Ohio, 6.20-6.22.
The road never ends, my friends ...

Nicely done!
At the Senior Awards Banquet last night ...
-- Men's Track won the Athletic Director's Award for highest team GPA among male teams.
-- Mike Rolek was chosen as Sportsperson of the Year for his outstanding accomplishments.
It was a great dinner and a great night, and it was fun to honor the outgoing seniors.
And yes, Phil's speech was outstanding and was caught forever on video.

Why Sean Hopkins matters ...
Before I get into the heart of the matter here, I must state for the record -- and I know he would agree -- that Sean Hopkins was a big pain in the ass when he was running for me at Marist between 2001 and 2005.
Hopkins was part of the largest, most dysfunctional train-wreck of a recruiting class in my 17-year history as Running Red Foxes coach. While many of his classmates were either dropping out of school or quitting the team -- or some variation of both of those things! -- Hopkins kept giving me lip, kept showing up for practice, kept running ... right up to and beyond graduation.
Yeah, Hopkins often said rude, inappropriate things on those long van rides. But he kept showing up for practice, kept running. Three years after graduation, I am proud of the fact that he's still showing up and still running. And he's posting some pretty swell times now, too, having just PRed for 5,000 meters at Yale.
That's what I wanted to write about. The Yale race, and his involvement with the current team.
Two weeks ago at that endless USMMA meet, Hopkins showed up wearing the Sayville Running Company team uniform. But at the end of the day, he showed he's still a true, red-and-white Running Red Fox to the core. In the 5k at USMMA, he battled it out with freshman Nick Webster. The two of them worked together. Truth be told, Webs used Hopkins, kicked him down and rode the bearded old Fox to a PR time on a day when the conditions were not all that great.
So on Sunday Hopkins shows up at Yale, this time wearing the more familiar red and white of the Alumni Racing Team. His reputation preceded him, but not of being the smart-talking bad-ass from yesteryear. Oh no. Webs spread the word to the guys in the 5k that day: Sit on Hopkins. You'll get a great time. Lovely! My own, personal, living-breathing pacesetter.
Check out the splits from a few posts ago and you'll see this to be the case. Hopkins was the perfect prop for Emerel and Duggan, both of whom ran marvelous races and posted big-time PRs. But this time, Hopkins was not to be denied his own glory. He might have been used, but he prevailed with the fastest time of the day. And he was able finally to put to rest the ghost of Charlie Williams -- fittingly enough at Yale, where Charlie outdueled him many years ago -- and get that long-sought PR for the 5k.
Hopkins' reach on this team is far greater than as a pacesetting prop. He coached and advised Tim Keegan, who has put together a marvelous freshman year of running. He has remained close to the team, despite the fact that he was actual teammates with only a handful of the graduating seniors. He's on a first-name basis with guys a lot younger than him, who have gotten to know what the back of his singlet looks like.
Yeah, Hopkins was a pain in my ass back in the day. But one thing I'll never forget was how he put things together during his senior season -- not an easy task, at a time when many runners lose their way as they prepare for real life. I'll admit we probably didn't connect properly as coach-athlete for several years, but we finally made the right adjustments toward the end of his college career. I remember his last race at VCP, how he PRed and ran great. Afterwards, he hugged me and said: "We nailed it, Pete." I'll never forget that moment.
Usually, the memories end right there. Fortunately, this shaggy old runner just won't go away. And he's helping to create more great memories. For me and for a new generation of Running Red Foxes.
