Winter weather, Chapter 3: Road race canceled

As you may recall from previous posts, each January my old friend Charlie Sprauer and I organize a low-key, free road race each January called the Recover From the Holidays (Fat Ass) 50km. This year's race was (key word) to be on Saturday, but we have decided to cancel it for 2018 given the extreme weather forecast. First of all, the roads at and around Norrie Point in Staatsburg are already icy and slick in spots, and the parking lot at Norrie Point is like a darn skating rink. Add the anticipated few inches of snow we're supposed to get tonight, and then mix in brutal cold and wind on Saturday (forecast wind-chills around 20-below!), and it really made no sense to hold this race. In keeping with our long-standing policy, we are not rescheduling. It's canceled. If we don't have it on the appointed date, we skip it and move on. Hopefully, we'll be back to doing the 5km loops there again in 2019. Only a few days into this year and a few weeks into this winter, and we've had enough. August, anyone?
