End of the year

Well, ECAC/IC4A at Princeton last Friday night was a mixed bag for the Running Red Foxes.

On the positive side, Addie DiFrancesco ran tremendously well and got 2nd place in the ECAC 10km. Addie is our first-ever scorer at an ECAC/IC4A Outdoor Championship, and she led for much of the race. This is really exciting. Splits will be posted later.

On the not-so-positive side, Tim Keegan ran out of gas in the men's 10,000 meters, running an off time of 32:06. Perhaps it was one meet, and one race, too many, for Timmy, who had a fantastic sophomore year from start to finish.

Again, splits will be posted here as soon as I remember to bring the handy-dandy notebook with me.

Let the summer begin ...

Individual/small group meetings

Guys,

As mentioned at last week's team meeting, I will be on campus on Tuesday, 2-4 p.m., and Wednesday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., to meet with you individually and/or in small groups.

At that time, we can go over your seasons, plan for the summer and discuss any other training issues.

I will NOT be on campus on Thursday, and Friday, I will only be on campus to get ready for the trip to Princeton.

See you in the next day or two.

What's next: IC4A and ECAC

Our spring season concludes on Friday night, under the lights one more time at Princeton, with Addie DiFrancesco in the ECAC women's 10,000 meters (8 p.m.) and Tim Keegan in the IC4A men's 10,000 meters (9:15 p.m.).

Spectators, friends and fans are welcome to attend.

NYC Qualifying Challenge, 5.9.09

Results and splits from Saturday's meet at Icahn Stadium, Randalls Island, NYC ...

200-meter dash: Mike Cocca 23.20. Comment: A fine farewell performance for a fine sprinter and excellent team leader. Thanks for everything!

400-meter dash
: Colin Frederickson 50.74. Comment: A solid ending to an amazing comeback track season(s).

800-meter run
: Brian McCormick 1:59.17. Comment: Nicely done, proving something we already knew, and that is the sub-2:00 for 800 meters is no fluke. That is what you are. We will miss you, and we wish you well at your new track (and college) home at Ithaca College.

1,500-meter run: Tom Lipari 3:59.54. Personal-best time. Splits: 63.6, 2:08.6 (65.0), 3:13.1 (64.5), 3:59.54 (final 400m, 61.54). Comment: An excellent end to a great freshman year. Fell short of the goal of 3:57, but still a strong PR. Nice job.

3,000-meter steeplechase
: Nick Webster, 9:30.23. Fifth place. Splits: 70.6, 2:23.8 (73.2), 3:39.0 (75.2), 4:55.4 (76.4), 6:13.1 (77.7), 7:32.8 (79.7), 8:50.5 (77.7), 9:30.23. Comments: You gave it your all, but you definitely looked tired. Strong sophomore year, and we're hoping for big things in your junior seasons.

Splits: 71.7, 2:23.1 (71.4), 3:35.0 (71.9), 4:46.7 (71.7), 5:59.9 (73.2), 7:15.4 (75.5), 8:31.8 (76.4), 9:47.5 (75.7), 11:07.3 (79.5), 12:28.0 (80.7), 13:47.1 (79.1), 15:02.3 (75.2), 15:38.62 (36.32). Comment: A long wait for a tough race. Do not let it diminish what was a great freshman year, from start to finish.

Icahn meet and team captains

Hello all blog followers:

I will post Icahn splits here as soon as I can. For the most part, they are not pretty. But overall, it was not an awful night. The meet was run better than last year. But not by much. Why they split the men's 5k into two sections is beyond me. And then: They decide to run the decathlon 1500 (all 2 athletes) in between sections, making the seeded 5k runners wait some more. Most had warmed up 2 hours prior to their race. Ridiculous. To his credit, Will Griffin did NOT use this as an excuse for a subpar race. Just not a good night for him. However, it had to have some negative impact.

Again, not a great night for us, but at least the weather was nice.

Second point: During my endless down time at this meet, I counted and tallied the Team Captain vote ballots. I will tell everyone the results when I see you at individual/group end-of-year meetings both Tuesday and Wednesday. Unless you would like me to post them on the blog sooner.

If you would like to find out the results sooner via blog, please post a comment and/or send me a text message. Note that I will not be on or near a computer until much later tonight. But I will check back in and get the splits up when I can later.

Otherwise, I'll see you all soon.

Next up: Keegs and Addie in the IC4A and ECAC 10,000 meters. Friday night. Princeton.

MAAC commentary and splits

Sorry for the delay. It has been a busy few days. Below are the results again, with appropriate commentary and splits.

Thanks to team member Mike Holinko for recording all splits. A huge help, especially in the pouring rain on Sunday.

Team standings: 1. Manhattan 225, 2. St. Peter's and Rider 119 (tie), 4. Marist 77, 5. Iona 73. PETE SAYS: This is awesome. A memorable day and a lot more points than expected, considering a redshirted Girma, an injured Vess and a recovering Conor Shelley. A testament to our depth and heart.

200-meter dash: 1 point
6. Mike Cocca 23.95
PETE SAYS: With the track virtually under water, our captain pulls out a great race and scores a key, late-meet point out of the slower section. I'll remember that for a long time!

400-meter dash: 7 points
3. Colin Frederickson 51.38
6. John Carabetta 52.12
PETE SAYS: C-Fred got out there and just got edged out by some pretty darn good sprinters. Solid time in the rain. Carabetta runs the first of two superb 400s, scoring out of the slow section. Great stuff, men!

800-meter run: 6 points
3. Kyle Havard 1:59.42
PETE SAYS: Perhaps the most bizarre championship event I have ever witnessed. Kyle gets second in the slower section and gets 3rd overall, the winner of the slow section wins the event! Strange. Kyle saved his best race of the season for last. Awesome. Gave me chills.

1,500-meter run: 1 point
6. Will Griffin 4:01.99. 62.5, 2:09.9 (67.4), 3:15.1 (65.2) 4:01.88 (62.99 last 400m)
David Raucci 4:05.99. 65, 2:12 (67), 3:17 (65), 4:04.99 (63.99 last 400m)
Conor Shelley 4:11.68. 65, 2:12 (67), 3:19 (67), 4:11.68 (69.68 last 400m)
Colin Johnson 4:16.18. 65, 2:12 (67), 3:21 (69), 4:16.18 (72.18 last 400m)
Kris Geist 4:18.56. 67, 2:19 (72), 3:29 (70), 4:18.56 (63.56 last 400m of your life!)
PETE SAYS: In a crazy tactical race, Will gets shoved off the track by an Iona runner, who gets DQed and we get the point. Excellent doubles by Raucci and Geist (great way to end your career, KG)

3000-meter steeplechase: 6 points
4. Nick Webster 9:22.77. 73, 2:31 (78), 3:51 (80), 5:12 (81), 6:34 (82), 7:56 (82), 9:13 (77).
5. Matt Flint 9:39.21. 77, 2:37 (80), 3:59 (82), 5:24 (85), 6:46 (82), 8:11 (85), 9:30 (79)
Tom Lipari 9:46.91. 77, 2:37 (80), 3:58 (81), 5:22 (84), 6:46 (84), 8:13 (87), 9:36 (83)
Matt Janczyk 9:46.96. 76, 2:37 (81), 3:59 (82), 5:20 (81), 6:44 (84), 8:11 (87), 9:36 (85)
John Keenan 9:49.37. 76, 2:36 (80), 3:57 (81), 5:22 (85), 6:46 (84), 8:13 (87), missed last split.
PETE SAYS: Weird event. Went out hard. Flint was the only one to race it smart. Across the board, top to bottom, times were off 5-10 seconds. Not sure why. We were hoping for more points here, but the MAAC got stronger in this event this year. That's a fact.

5,000-meter run: 6 points

3. Tim Keegan 15:00.59. 72, 2:25 (73), 3:36 (71), 4:48 (72), 6:02 (74), 7:12 (70), 8:23 (71), 9:34 (71), 10:46 (72), 12:00 (74), 13:15 (75), 14:25 (70), 15:00.59 (35.59)

Curtis Jensen 15:30.64. 72, 2:25 (73), 3:34 (69), 4:48 (74), 6:02 (74), 7:12 (70), 8:23 (71), 9:37 (74), 10:52 (75), 12:09 (77), 13:29 (80), 14:50 (81), 15:30.64 (40.64)

Joe McElhoney 15:34.28. 73, 2:28 (75), 3:39 (71), 4:51 (72), 6:05 (74), 7:18 (73), 8:38 (80), 9:54 (76), 11:12 (78), 12:28 (76), 13:45 (7), 15:00 (75), 15:34.28 (34.28)

PETE SAYS: We gave back a lot of points to Iona in this event, but it wasn't for a lack of trying. Excellent doubles by Keegs and Webs and JoeMac, fantastic PR for Zak and an off day for Curt.

10,000-meter run: 17 points

Another great MAAC meet, and the team should be proud of its efforts. It was a TRUE TEAM performance, and we scored some amazing, unexpected points all around.

Vassar track meet, 5.1.09

We had three guys run at the Vassar open meet on Friday night. It was a beautiful night as the rain and wind subsided. Assistant coach Joey had a lot of fun playing with Conor's Blackberry stopwatch.

Even an old-school fart like me had to fess up that the thing was pretty cool.

Anyway, Brownie had a fantastic PR in the 5km. Geist and Masto ran one last steeple in a race that featured just those two guys and a pretty fast Vassar guy who took the race out at like IC4A pace (everyone suffered). Anyway, the splits ...

3,000-meter steeplechase

Greg Masto: 10:28.76. Second place.
72, 2:34 (82), 3:58 (84), 5:23 (85), 6:49 (86), 8:17 (88), 9:44 (87), 10:28.76.

Kris Geist: 10:39.55. Third place.
74, 2:37 (83), 4:02 (85), 5:29 (87), 6:58 (89), 8:29 (91), 9:58 (89), 10:39.55.

5,000-meter run

Ryan Brown: 16:07.34. Fourth place. Personal-best time.
76.3, 2:35.8 (79.5), 3:52.4 (76.6), 5:10.1 (77.7), 6:27.0 (76.9), 7:44.9 (77.9), 9:03.0 (78.1), 10:21.2 (78.2), 11:39.7 (78.5), 12:58.4 (78.7), 14:16.6 (78.2), 15:32.3 (75.7), 16:07.34 (35.04). 1600m splits: 5:10.1, 5:11.1, 5:11.1. Comment: Wonderful, fantastic end to what has been a great and promising freshman year. You have established yourself as a legitimate D1 distance runner. You should be proud of that. I am.
