Happy New Year: First day of school finally arrives

Not sure why, maybe the protracted stretches of high humidity, but this summer has seemed interminably long. Don't get me wrong, it's been a great summer, and the warm-weather months and days of longer sunlight are perhaps my favorite of the year. But enough is enough and it's time for the kids to mercifully go back to school; yesterday was their first day back here in Hyde Park. I post this photo here for the benefit of all that are not connected to us on Facebook, the traditional "first day of school" photos: Joey, entering 12th grade; Natalie, entering 9th grade; James, entering 5th grade. A large part of parenting is being in a constant state of worry. Today, for the first time, Joey drove to high school with his sister riding shotgun. Down the road they went, bumpin' to the terrible music on K104, smiling and looking forward to the first Friday of the new school year. In the front yard, their nervous parents walked the dogs and waved goodbye. Another school year has started. Away we go ...
