Metropolitan Championships: Day 1 results

Well, it could have been worse. It was chilly and damp, but no real steady rain. We did not have to pop open our umbrellas once during the several hours we were down at Ramapo for the meet. So, that is a good thing.

On the track, three of our four athletes competing scored points for us (top-8 finishers score). In the 10,000-meter run, freshman Omar Perez ran a personal-best time and placed fifth, and junior Doug Ainscow also notched a personal-best and his first sub-34:00 performance at the distance. There was no fully automatic timing (FAT) for the first day of Mets. Omar’s time of 33:43.9 converts to 33:44.14 (the standard hand-to-FAT conversion is plus-.24), which still beats his time from Richmond two weeks ago (33:44.97) by the narrowest of margins. However, this was a much better executed race, as you’ll see by his splits (both 5km splits were virtually identical). In Doug’s case, he continues to improve steadily in this event, and his race was further proof he is headed in the right direction. His hard work and dedication to our program is appreciated every single day.

Many thanks to teammates Billy Hild (split-taker, cheerleader, van music director, Schanz communications liaison) and Catherine Ferreri for coming along today. Neither of them had to come, especially on such a dreary day weather-wise. But they did, and it was appreciated.
