Terry Horton: Hall of a good guy!

While we are in the congratulatory mode, I was honored to be at today's Sports Museum of Dutchess County Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at the Knights of Columbus in Wappingers Falls. One member of the Class of 2012 Inductees was our very own Terry Horton. Terry was honored for his longtime commitment to our sport -- most notably his volunteer efforts in meet management and course management at Bowdoin Park. It is fitting that the Sports Museum would honor him, as that group had put on a 5K race at Bowdoin on the course that Terry mapped out and maintained. But really, every one of us who has ever toiled up those hills and trails owes Terry a big bow of thanks for his countless hours out there.

It was great to see someone from our sport being recognized by this excellent group. It could not have happened to a more deserving guy. It was also great to catch up with some old-time track friends from the area, as well as some old-time (emphasis on OLD) local sports personalities from my days as a writer for the Poughkeepsie Journal. At Marist, where I am among the longest tenured coaches and I hang out with college students all day, I am considered the "old man." Today, hanging out with the Sports Museum types, I felt young again.

Congrats again, Terry.
