Put your shoes on

Thanks to Fast Tony for sending me this link to a very interesting blog post on the New York Times.

Basically, it refutes the notion that barefoot running is more efficient than shod running.

  1. Some thoughts:
    1) They were on a treadmill. I know for a fact that my running changes when I am on a treadmill. I know its practically impossible to study running without the benefit of a treadmill, but the treadmill changes the mechanics of how one runs.
    2)They weren't actually running barefoot! They were running with socks on. How do we know that if they maybe took the socks off, that this study would of come out differently. Walk around your home with socks on, then walk around without socks. Tell me their isn't a difference.
    3)They didn't actually study whether or not, barefoot running was effective in preventing injuries. All they examined was what way will save the most energy. And if their conclusion is that running with more weight is more efficient for us, would you like us to start racing in our trainers?
    4)None of us really train barefoot, some guys train in the lightweight trainers (i.e. frees, speedstars), but the article basically concluded that training in heavy trainers is not beneficial, and that lightweight trainers are the best way to train!

    If you can' tell, I really really miss arguing with you.
