Week in review: Back on track

After an interminable winter of cold and ice and snow and ice and cold, earlier this week we had a glorious few days of summerlike weather. Aside from the gloriousness of it, from a practical perspective it was SO well timed.

Because of the deep snow pack and the relentless cold weather, we had not been able to use our beautiful outdoor track at North Field since Finals Week back in December. We kept checking the track, morosely noting that it would be a while before we could get on it.

But then, this miraculous March heat wave melted it all, so much more quickly that we could have anticipated. And? We have been practicing all week on the track! Yay! Fantastic! Neat!

At this morning’s women’s distance practice, it was quite brisk – real feel of 25 degrees. But! No snow. No wind. No problem. The ladies got their work done. Again, we’ve been on there all week, multiple practices already. The pole vault and high jump mats are out. One of the long jump/triple jump pits has thawed out. Terry has hauled out hurdles. It’s an active scene. It’s awesome. For me, at least, practicing at that track will never get old and it will always be awesome and it will never be taken for granted.

As we look ahead to the beginning of our track season, we note here with excitement that our first-ever home track meet is full steam ahead for Saturday, April 18. We are hoping to get many of you back on campus for that! More details in the coming days and weeks.

For now, we’re just glad to be back on track. In any weather. After three months of it not being an option, it’s awesome to be able to shiver out there again.
