MAAC Championships: Men's results

This meet was a long time coming and this was the perfect team to execute it. Our men had their best conference finish in six years, edging out a very strong Rider team and trailing only the perennially powerful Iona team and the incredibly deep and talented host school, getting a hard-earned third-place finish. This is a special group of young men and they showed it today. They wanted it and they closed hard and they made an old coach very proud. Highly, highly neat.

Track time trial + birthday visit

Today was a good day in our universe. It was sunny and incredibly warm for the end of October. And great timing! As we planned a track team time trial "meet" at the Vassar Track. Coach Horton even summoned our good friend Ken Kraft to fire off a starting gun in the three races -- 150-meter dash, 300-meter dash, 600-meter run. We had music, full team support, fast times and good vibes. And! We had a special, unexpected visit from Marist Running Royalty Conor Shelley (the Original Dumbass!), who was in town on business. Conor mixed easily with our current team members and noted that the "velocity" of the team got a bit faster from when he was here (translation: we have a lot more sprinters!). Conor even hung around and spoke with the XC men who are preparing for Saturday's MAAC Championship as we had a brief planning and goal-setting meeting. Highly neat all around.

Scrudato wins marathon!

Congrats to Marist Running Alum Ryan Scrudato, who placed first at the Suffolk County Marathon on Long Island on Sunday in 2:46:57. And thanks to loyal blog follower Louise Valentino for sending a copy of this clip from Newsday!

CCSU Mini Meet

We are sending a small contingent of the team (10 men, 2 women) to the CCSU Mini Meet on Friday at Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain, CT. Women's race is at 3:30p. Men's A race (7 runners per team) is at 4p and B race at 4:30p. Women's race distance = 3km; men's race distance = 5km.

A note from Dietrich Mosel

Marist Forever Foxes Running alum Dietrich Mosel emailed me the following note to send along and share with Running Red Fox Nation, a topic about which he is quite passionate. OK!

To My Marist Teammates, Friends and Colleagues,
I am writing you today to inform you of an abusive practice happening right now in New York City, the operating of Horse Drawn Carriages in Central Park. This industry has been under scrutiny for years due to the neglect these animals have been subjected to which often results in serious injury and even death.
In the case of Ryder, a horse that collapsed in Hell’s Kitchen this past summer due to exhaustion, the carriage industry and their representatives lied to the public about his age, condition and whereabouts. His owner bought him on the cheap and told a colleague, who informed the New York Post, that he was aware the horse was too old to work but would simply squeeze every last dollar out of it.
He was too old to be working, a veterinarian (who has been fined and suspended for malpractice) blamed his condition on ingesting possum droppings rather than being overworked in the heat and he was sent to a “farm upstate” to heal but we never learned of the location and his status.
Here is a series of articles written by those at The New York Post which clearly depict the timeline of events and abuse. The most recent unfortunately breaks the news that Ryder has passed away. This is the direct result of political inaction and pay for play economics given Mayor Adams and Speaker Adams are both endorsed by the powerful Transport Workers Union which represents the carriage drivers.
These horses will continue to suffer unless the New York City Council chooses to take action by scheduling a hearing for Intro 573 (The Bill to Ban Horse Carriages) to be discussed in an open forum. Speaker Adams has the power to do this and simply won’t. The TWU has even taken to calling Council Members who were going to sign on as co-sponsors to the bill to convince them not to.
Celebrities have even stepped in to try and persuade the City Council to effect change, here is the link to the article should you wish to read more. Below are emails from NYCLASS (New Yorkers for Clean, Livable and Safe Streets) and VFAR (Voters for Animal Rights) which also communicate the most recent news.
We need everyones help to help push this forward, it would mean so much to me and the horses if you have a few moments to:
1. Call Speaker Adams office and demand that she schedule a hearing for Intro 573. Her numbers are (718)-206-2068 and (212)-788-7210
2. Please use the template hyperlinked in the second email, attached below from Voters For Animal Rights, to send an email to Speaker Adams and other Council Members. You only need to input basic information, their email is pre-written, it’s quick and easy!
3. Please send this email to any and everyone you know, the more calls and emails they receive, the more likely it is that they take action
Thank you so much for your help and please reach out to me with any questions or additional ways you can help!

IC4A Championships results

No way to sugarcoat this one; disappointing day for the men. Only silver lining was the 3-through-6 pack of Czop, TP, Kieran, Pech, who zoomed in a 6-second compression. This should not be a middle-of-the-pack team in a field like this. But today, we were.

ECAC/IC4A races on Friday

 IC4A/ECAC Championships
Friday, October 14, 2022
Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx, NY
ECAC women's championship race = 11a
IC4A men's championship race = 11:45a

Note that the men's 8km course will NOT be the traditional Van Cortlandt course -- no Back Hills, no Cemetery Hill. It will be a "preview" of the NCAA Northeast Regional course, which consists basically of 2km loops through the park, cowpath and up "freshman" hill. Great spectator course!

Hope to see you there.

Forever Foxes -- coaching and (still) racing!

Thanks to Mark Valentino for sending me this picture (and these results) from Saturday's coaches race at the mammoth Manhattan XC Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park. Marist Running Alums Matt Flint, Conor Shelley and Mark Valentino all participated in the race, with Flint leading the way! All are coaching in high school now -- Flint at his alma mater Queensbury, Conor at Chaminade and Tino at Roslyn. Very cool.

‘The finish line will surrender’

Right before the start of cross country races, the nervous energy on and around the starting line is palpable. At a huge meet like Paul Short, it’s purely electric. Most teams huddle up a few minutes before the race to get themselves fired up. Coaches are often (but not always) involved. Women’s head coach Chuck Williams is a master motivator of the team, and that is always evident in the pre-race huddle. Before Friday’s race, his “huddle speech” was especially eloquent and he shared it with me, so now I can share it with you here!

Here’s what he SAID:

It’s important to realize that you will be the one controlling the dialogue in your head throughout the race, so let’s start scripting a positive result. Find your mantra to use when times get tough to remind you that you are more than tough enough to handle the challenge. Mine is always, “If it’s to be, it’s up to me!” When I say this, I simply put my head down and get the job done, realizing no one else is going to do it for me. Will you get tired? You bet! Your legs will ache. Your mind will get fuzzy and you’ll just want the race to be over. But, you must fight. You must keep going just like you do in workouts. Just get to the next mile marker and then the next and so on. I guarantee you that if you can just keep fighting, the finish line will surrender. It will acknowledge your bravery and toughness and appear before your eyes. And, the more you can be engaged while in the latter miles of the race, the sooner the finish will come.

As soon as you start having doubts, you will lose time. My advice is to accept that you are going to hurt, but know that everyone else is hurting too so don’t worry about it. You’re going to have to dig deep late in the race and if you’ve learned nothing else through training is that you can dig deep, that there is a strength in you that you never knew existed. We all remember that run you gutted out and learned something about yourself. That toughness is still in you and probably even to a greater extent than before. As fatigue sets in, dig deep. You have it in you and the more determined you are in the last part of the race, the better your finishing time will be and the more proud you will be of yourself – not just at the finish line but for weeks to come.

Gianna T wins 5k, makes alumni connection!

Earlier today, I got this photo via text from Chris Camp (Running Red Foxes, Class of 2005) who coincidentally shared the same uniform, starting line and finish line with fellow Forever Fox Gianna Tedeschi (Class of 2021) in Little Silver, NJ. Said Camp: "Yeah it was cool. We both had Marist warm up gear. I had never met her before obviously. She beat me by a good 10 seconds. Just happy to have been in shouting distance." Gianna won the race in 17:48 and seemed equally excited at the new team uniforms, courtesy of Tracksmith. Feel good, race fast. Neat!

Pull-up Pax

Congrats to junior captain Christopher Paxis, who -- along with being a pretty decent XC and track runner -- last week broke the Team Weight Room pull-ups record. Under the watchful eyes of Strength and Conditioning Coach Aaron Suma (a great friend to our program!), Pax demolished the previous record of 32 and made it all the way to 40. The guys were around him, hyping him up. It was highly neat!
