The trials-and-finals format of these championship meets
makes it a nerve-wracking tightrope for our athletes. Denise Grohn was in the
third and final section of the mile. It was slow, and then it got fast, and
fortunately Deni was just fast enough to advance to Sunday’s final, eclipsing
her good friend Emily Burns’ school record from two years ago. Denise had to
close hard and nearly tripped over the final few meters. She closed extremely
hard! Em wasn’t so fortunate in her race, the first heat. She ran hard and
tough and gutsy. She got cut off/tripped up in the late stages of the race,
recovered gamely but not enough and she was the first runner that missed the
final. Dang. We tried to protest, but with no flag raised (the tangle happened
right in front of the head umpire) there was no recourse. Emily will come back
strong on the anchor of the DMR tomorrow. Denise moves on to the finals. Such
is the nature of the trials-and-finals format. We are proud of them both. More
updates from the women’s meet later tonight …
