Catfish rising

Runners have their pre-race rituals. Perhaps these two new Running Red Foxes, freshmen Dan Czop and Ramsey Little, have come up with a new one: Fishing the Hudson River. Czop and Ramsey snagged this 15-pound catfish from the Hudson River on Friday afternoon, before our team dinner. No, this was not part of the team dinner. That fish was swimming in a river well-known for its PCB levels, which makes it a great candidate for catch-and-release. Hopefully, these two guys can 'snag' some fast 6km times in the morning at the Farm.

Home meet: Program cover, circa 2019

Check out this awesome program cover for tomorrow's home meet at Vassar Farm. This is one of the coolest productions for our program that we've ever seen. So thrilled. Of course, the idiot taking the picture (me) couldn't figure out the proper lighting. No worries. Come to the meet and get an actual one in person. Major props to our Sports Information Guy, the MAN, Pete Fagan, for doing this -- and so much more -- for our program. Pete's a track guy -- he was a fantastic pole vaulter at Binghamton University (look it up!) -- and he cares a lot about our team and our program. That care shows here in this program cover. Truly magic. Neat!

Scene from the 'home office'

This summer, more than most, I have spent a lot of time working and relaxing on our back porch. With the ongoing construction at the McCann Center -- the new McCann is set to open in December and promises to be amazing for all of us on campus -- we had been encouraged to "work from home" as often as possible. I'm a homebody, so such suggestions did not require a lot of arm twisting for me. Got me a laptop, a coffee maker and Alexa for music or sports talk, a few lazy dogs to keep me company, and away we go. This picture from the other day is pretty typical of the scene. I sat down to work and our extremely lazy beagle mix, Mikey, refused to move. So he nestled in with the old man. For some reason, this photo makes me look fat so I weighed myself for the first time in about two months. I did gain a few pounds -- probably due to my obsession with Stewart's lemon doughnuts, which thankfully now are out of season, and also a little less jogging than usual. And forgive me for not donning my usual Marist gear, but I am proud of my oldest son's school, where he is just starting his junior year. Alas, summer's over for me, and I'm back to working at work. Which is OK. It's gonna start getting chilly out here on the porch. Until next summer ...

Home meet information

Monday was the first day of classes at Marist, signifying the start of the fall 2019 semester. Another school year is upon us, my 29th as coach of the XC/track teams here at Marist. Upon waking up to meet the Hyde Park Early Birds, it sure felt like summer was over as the car thermometer read 48 degrees and I scurried to find my gloves. Coach Chuck, who was headed up to Columbia County early for a golf outing, reported seeing 41 degrees in his car. This is symbolic of the end of the summer and the beginning of what I like to call the "eight months of winter," as we get plunged into early-morning darkness from which we will not submerge again until late April/early May.

Ah, but every beginning has an ending, and every ending leads to a new beginning. On Saturday, we begin our 2019-2020 journey through cross country and track with our season opening cross country meet at Vassar Farm and Ecological Preserve. Our visiting teams include MAAC schools Iona, Manhattan and Siena, and NEC school Central Connecticut State University. We are grateful for their participation. Here's the morning schedule.

Men's 6km race = 9 a.m. start
Women's 5km race = 9:45 a.m. start
Senior Day festivities = immediately concluding the women's race

Please note that Vassar Farm is home to the Poughkeepsie Farm Project, and Saturday morning is a busy time for these fine folks. Parking will not be available close to the course. It'll be a relatively short walk, but plan accordingly. Thank you for understanding as we strive to be good neighbors. The weather forecast is looking good and we are hoping for a nice turnout of family, friends, teammates and alumni for our only "home" meet of the entire calendar year.

Preseason update: Team photo day

We dodged the raindrops and thunderstorms on Wednesday afternoon for team photos down by the Hudson River. Here is the complete team photo as well as a group shot of the seniors (missing only sprinter Santosh Krishnan, who will be arriving on campus shortly).

Spencer's solid half marathon. In San Diego!

Here is Marist Running Alum Spencer Johnson’s picture and race report from the America’s Finest City Half Marathon in San Diego, where he now lives: I placed 13th overall out of 4141 in 1:09.31. The first few miles were downhill coming from Cabrillo National Monument at the tip of Point Loma, and the last few miles were straight uphill going up from Downtown to Balboa Park. I ran most of the race alone besides the last few miles, but it was a good effort considering I did 106 miles the week before! Here are my splits:

Mile 1: 5:10
Mile 2: 5:10
Mile 3: 4:58
Mile 4: 4:54
Mile 5: 5:14
Mile 6: 5:16
Mile 7: 5:24
Mile 8: 5:17
Mile 9: 5:11
Mile 10: 5:12
Mile 11: 5:23
Mile 12: 5:32
Mile 13: 5:31
Finish, 13.1: 1:09:31

Preseason van selfie

On not on Instagram so I didn't initially see this "van selfie" that Coach Chuck posted on our team account. My daughter Natalie tipped me off to it. We spend a lot of time in vans from now through the middle of May, so here's a snapshot of it.

Preseason update

We are several days into the preseason. Sorry for the lack of posts. Here’s a quick recap so far:

Wednesday: The team reported to campus and for the first time our athletes were housed in the new North End housing – Ward Hall, in this case. These new dorms are state-of-the-art and, most importantly for August … air conditioned!

Thursday: Traditional first workout for the men, Mills Hills at Staatsburg State Historic Site.
Friday: Traditional first workout for the women, timed intervals at Bowdoin Park.

For the first time, both the men’s and women’s teams traveled together to these venues, which was nice.

Saturday: We traveled to Minnewaska State Park Preserve in Ulster County for a group long run, followed by a dip in the refreshing lake and then a picnic lunch. Kudos to Coach Chuck for organizing the lunch with sandwiches provided by Shelly’s Deli in Hyde Park. Upon our return to campus, it was a team lift in North Field Fitness (“the tent”), which was a sweltering 91 degrees because power was cut to the McCann Center area due to ongoing construction. By the end of the lift, power was restored and the tent cooled off somewhat.

This morning (Sunday) is move-out day, with a few recovery days before we embark on another challenging week of training next week, with late summer heat expected to kick in at full force. Glad to have the teams back on campus as we strive to Be Better in 2019-2020. We look forward to the arrival of our track team at the end of the next week as well.

Happy New Year!

Generations convene in Commack

While I was in Pittsfield on Saturday, my phone blew up with texts and photos from Long Island, where Marist Running’s past, present and future convened at the Commack Ambulance Run for Your Life 5K. Proud alum and good friend Ned Kenyon ran 21:01.35 and placed fourth in the EMS/Fire/Police/Veterans division (Ned is a NYPD police officer). Rising junior James Moehringer (16:15.48) won the race. Rising freshman Dan Czop (16:53.10) was third and rising sophomore Brendan Zeng (17:43.83) was fourth. Czop and Zeng are Commack High School alums. Very cool to see the generations together in a race.

Laps of Clapp, circa 2019

Yeah. On Saturday, for the seventh consecutive August, I participated in the Sweltering Summer Ultra in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. This entails running as many laps of a hard, dirt “track” that measures approximately 0.3553 of a mile for eight hours – 7 a.m. till 3 p.m. I won’t bore you with any of my race details, other than to say that I started at 7 a.m., and finished my last lap (no partial laps allowed!) at 2:57:48 p.m., so I utilized the entire 8 hours to get in 108 laps this year. But really, what this day is about is togetherness. Race director Benn Griffin has created a wonderful community of Clappsters (race is held at Clapp Park in Pittsfield). I’m not a big user/fan of social media, but Benn’s utilization of the race’s Facebook page throughout the year is masterful and has fostered this sense of community. By the time we all convene in Pittsfield in August, many of us “know” each other through this connection. It’s awesome and God willing I’ll go back every summer. Benn creates individualized, laminated race cards for each of us at the aid table. You can see mine here. But one of my fellow ultra brothers, Lee Dickey, sums up the feeling of the day – and the sport – beautifully on his card: “Ultrarunners are some of the most genuine people on the planet and I’m proud to be in the group.”

Long run on LI

Got this photo from Moe after a group long run (15 miles) on Long Island, with a request from Kutch to post this post-run feeding photo. Preseason starts in a little more than a week (Wednesday, Aug 14). Will be nice to have the men and women back on campus and running around these parts.

Alums in the city

Got this photo via text from Omar, with a request from Schanz to post to the blog. So here it is! Several young alums getting together in the city for a birthday. Great to see them all grown up, from left: Schanz, Datos, Mariella, Catherine, Omar, The Goat.
