Colonial Relays, Thursday results: 3 IC4A qualifiers in 10km!

Great night for our 10km men – Spencer Johnson, Chris Rivas and Mike Kennedy – who all earned IC4A qualifying marks and personal-best times on a perfect night for a 25-lap race. It was chilly and not much wind. All three men ran machine-like consistent splits. For Spencer, it was an 8-second improvement over his previous best; for Rivas, it was an improvement over his freshman year time by more than a minute; for Kennedy, it equaled his time from IC4As last spring (technically, he was .08 slower tonight, but we’ll cut him some slack. These guys have been training hard through the challenging winter and early spring. All of them have been cranking out high mileage, hard tempo runs and even harder segment fartlek workouts – no track workouts for them! – and it worked well for them. They earned every step of it. Nicely done, men!

Update: In the original post above and below, I neglected to mention our other racers on Thursday night. That was bad form on my part. Riley Hughes did not achieve our pre-race goals in the 10km, but he gave it a game effort especially in the first half of the race, before the pace dropped off. It's a bummer because Riley works just as hard as the other guys, doing the long grueling workouts at 7:30 a.m., doubling later in the day, long runs, lifts, all of it. He'll be back at it soon. In the 3km, Elias Platanias had a bittersweet PR -- his best time but just couldn't slip under the 9:00 barrier. Joey Miller admitted before the race to being a bit flat. He competed well but the result was, well, a bit flat for him. He'll be back on Saturday for a 1,500-meter relay leg. Dan Hillman had a true "rust buster," his first race in a while. Dan's been working hard and training consistently, and this race wasn't totally indicative of his fitness level. Again, sorry for not including this information in the original post about the 10km qualifiers.
