ECAC/IC4A: Get on the bus!
For the first time in school history, we will be taking a BUS to the ECAC/IC4A Championships in Boston this coming weekend. For many programs, this may seem like ho-hum news. For us, it's a big deal! Combined, we have the largest number of qualifying athletes in school history. We'll give the details in a later post with the time schedule, but we have seven individual and two relay qualifying athletes for the women, and two relay and one individual qualifying athlete for the men. All totaled, with coaches, that's a travel party of close to 30 for meet. No vans for us! We're pretty excited about this and about the prospect of ending our indoor track season on a high note as outdoor track season rapidly approaches. Neat.

Fastrack Last Chance: Men's results and splits
Oftentimes, these “last chance” meets
have a purgatorial feel, and tonight at Ocean Breeze was no different. It was a
small meet and the building was eerily quiet, especially on the heels of a
raucous Big East championship meet that preceded this meet. But for our team,
don’t mistake small and quiet for meaningless. Far from it! We accomplished a
lot here tonight – an elusive IC4A qualifying mark in the distance medley
relay (which missed the standard by a fraction of a second last week at MAACs), and a series of strong individual performances that serve as a
springboard not only to next week’s IC4As but also to the outdoor season that
is looming on the horizon.
First, the DMR: So glad we got that
out of the way. As usual, the table was set by our 1200-meter leg of Brian
Henderson, who took control of the race, ceded the lead but then regained it
and handed off in first place. Our middle legs (Tanner Senius, Steven Morrison)
were a little flat but got the job done, as did our anchor leg (Steven Rizzo).
The time of 10:16.58 was unspectacular but effective; it easily met the IC4A
standard of 10:19.00. Our travel party to Boston swelled a bit more, and we
have successfully required a bus for that trip to BU for the weekend. This, of
course, is very neat.
Other highlights from the meet:
--Freshmen James Moehringer and James
Pratt notching sub-9:00 times in the 3km, and senior Will Duggan ending his
collegiate indoor track career with a big PR in the event.
--Freshman Connor St. Germain (CSG)
popping a monster season-best in the 800 (1:56.65).
--Sophomore Connor Levins notching a
PR in the mile.
--Last but definitely not least, Conor
Stack throwing down a scintillating kick for a completely huge PR in the 5km
(15:19.99). Classmate Alex Hogue also PRed and freshman Graham Strzelecki
popped a monster PR in the event as well to end the evening on a very positive
note.

Fastrack Last Chance: Women's result and splits
With all of our ECAC qualifiers taken
care of already, we were planning a very small crew of women’s athletes for
tonight’s meet at Ocean Breeze. That crew got even smaller with an illness bug
that is swirling around our women’s team. How small? It became reduced to one
(1!) athlete – sophomore Alyssa Lafave in the 3,000. Alyssa was a great “team”
all her own, as she placed second in the 3,000 in a monstrous personal-best
time of 10:13.12 – topping her previous best in the event by more than 25
seconds. She ran a strong and powerful race, moving up through the field with
each lap, and she finished with a strong kick. Nicely done, “team!”

USATF Indoor Championships: 3km racewalk results
We are very proud of our racewalkers,
who traveled out to New Mexico to represent Marist at the USATF Indoor
Championships. Both Lauren and Katie suffered from the effects of altitude.
Lauren earned All-American honors with her top-6 finish. Katie struggled in the
race but hung tough to finish. While the team was at the Armory for the MAAC
Indoor Championships, we are proud of these ladies for repping our team at
another championship.

MAAC Indoor Championships: Women's results, day 2
Tremendous finish to a great weekend for the ladies. We had five individual scorers -- Debbie Boerke in the 400; Emily Burns and Shea Bohan in the mile; Jordan Casey (big PR!) and Maria Smith in the 3,000. We had two near school records in the relays -- the 4x800 placed second and came within a half-second of the school record, and the 4x400 was surprisingly close to the school record as well (one second off). Last but not least, freshman Hayley Collins (2nd in the 5km on Saturday night) was named MAAC Top Rookie Performer on the track (see picture above, from Coach Chuck). Nicely done, Hayley! Nicely done, everyone!

MAAC Indoor Championships: Men's results, day 2
We didn't have a lot of competitors today, but the ones that did race made the most of their time on the Armory track. The 4x800 relay qualified for the IC4A meet with a strong and steady performance from all four relay team members. The 4x400 relay team ran an equally solid race and got a season-best time by three seconds. And the 3km featured a killer double by Dietrich Mosel, who followed up his monster 5km PR with an 8:26.09 and fifth place. Sophomores Conor Stack and Alex Hogue both ran big PRs in the 3k. In the team standings, we were just an eyelash out of fifth place. A good end to the meet.

MAAC Indoor Championships: Men's results, Day 1
UPDATED with official Armory splits ...
Senior Dietrich Mosel had a monster race in the 5,000, placing third overall and breaking up the usual Iona gauntlet in the event with a personal-record time of 14:38.25. That time is believed to be the fastest 5km time by a Marist runner in a MAAC Championship. He ran like a champ and will be back for more on Sunday in the 3,000. Our DMR team missed an IC4A mark by an excruciating 0.24. Dietrich and the DMR were the only scorers on the day for the men. Back at it on Sunday with competitors in the 3,000-meter run, 4x800 relay and 4x400 relay.

National academic honors
Check out this snazzy graphic that Marist Athletics put together to honor our teams, which once again were named the USTFCCCA All-Academic list. We continue to set the pace academically, as our program had the highest team GPA of any Marist athletics teams and our men's cross country team had the 8th highest out of nearly 200 teams honored. Check it out. Very neat.
No Walkway races this June. Dang.
It was just announced today that the Walkway Marathon race series would be canceled for 2018. The tentative plans were for the race to be held on June 9 with an early evening start for the 5k and half marathon. The marathon race was being discontinued. Now, the entire event is being discontinued. This is a bummer as this race really showcased our campus and our program -- current and alums. Hopefully, it will return in the future. Here is a link to the story that was published in Dutchess County's Finest Daily Newspaper.

BU Valentine: Men's results and splits
The men’s portion of the
Valentine meet at BU was extremely long but worth the wait, as there were
several strong performances – highlighted by Dietrich Mosel’s IC4A qualifying
mark in the 3,000-meter run. Dietrich has now qualified in both the 5km and 3km
for the championship meet, three weeks from now back in Boston. He PRed by
around 10 seconds – pretty impressive at that speed.
There were several other
highlights: Five guys well under 2:00 in the 800 meters, with Hawker getting a
big PR; Henderson breaking 2:30 in the 1,000 for the first time; two sub-4:20
milers; huge 3km PR from Draney; another PR from Chris Rivas in the 5k; and a
strong debut in the 500 dash from Josh Hindle.
And now we steer indoor track
into championship season, starting with the MAAC meet next weekend at the
Armory. The meet is on Saturday and Sunday night.

BU Valentine: ECAC qualifiers, better together
Although they are becoming more
and more commonplace on our women’s team, it’s still a special moment when we
get ECAC qualifying marks in both individual and relay events. It’s extra
special when you get what happened in the mile run at the Valentine meet on
Friday night – two teammates both getting the standard, together, within hundredths
of seconds of each other (and of the school record, too! Wow!). Such was the beautiful
synchronicity of Emily Burns (4:55.92) and Shea Bohan (4:55.96), teammates,
training partners, good friends, and now two of the fastest milers in school
history, both punching their tickets to the ECAC Championships, right back here
on the Magic Carpet in a few weeks. A few events prior to that, Denise Grohn
had a monster race at 1,000 meters, getting the ECAC mark and getting
remarkably close to one of the oldest school records on the books, with her
2:53.95. No one is more consistent and tough than Denise, and she showed that
today. In the “better together” category, she shared the same heat as her
teammate, friend and relay partner Kerry Gaye, who eclipsed that elusive 3:00
barrier in the event with a 2:59.10. Excellent running, ladies. And it’s even
better together, isn’t it?

BU Valentine: Distance qualifiers, twice as nice
The late night qualifiers on
Friday were twice as nice: Maria Smith (3,000) and Hayley Collins (5,000) not
only punched their ticket to the ECAC Indoor Championships, but also their
times qualified them for the ECAC Outdoor Championships. And although the
standards have yet to be posted, we’re almost certain this will qualify them
both for the USATF Junior Championships in June. Talk about getting the most
out of some great races! Nicely done, ladies. And as you can see by this photo,
Maria got spiked several times during the race. It certainly didn’t slow her
down. Great stuff.

Five ECAC qualifying marks.
Numerous PR times – including a great comeback race from senior captain Mariah
Christian in the 5k. Good heavens. The Magic Carpet lived up to its billing –
and then some – tonight. What a great afternoon and evening of races for the
