Gotham Cup: Shaking off the rust

Just arriving back from the Armory after our first meet of 2014. As is usually the case after the holiday break, performances were a bit rusty. This is understandable and to be expected. By no means do we "accept" this, but we understand it and so do our athletes. All are hungry to improve upon tonight's performances, and quickly. For a first-meet-back rust-buster, we had some solid performances.

On the women's side, sprinter Danielle Asaro nearly matched her school record in the 60-meter dash. Freshman Molly Weeks ran the 500-meter dash for the first time and missed the 15-year-old school record in that event by .08.

On the men's side, junior captain David Marthy opened with a strong 800-meter run, placing second in 1:56.23 -- a decent early-season time. In the 3,000-meter run, junior Mark Valentino and freshman Zach Toner both set personal-best times and broke 9:00 in the process.

We are back at the Armory next weekend for the NYU Saturday Night Shootout. I will post complete results and splits from Friday's meet later on today.
