Back to the floating track

Monday was the first day of 2014 track practice. For our sprint crew, it was over to SUNY New Paltz and the big blue doughnut (as I called it in a previous post), the elevated, three-lane 185-meter surface that our friends in Ulster County so graciously allow us to use several times per week.

For many on our sprint team, it was their first time over there. When asked what they thought of it, the responses were generally positive. One guy called it the “floating track” and another made some Super Mario reference that neither Coach Horton or I understood. Speaking of Coach Horton … what an odd sight and sound it was to see Big Papa T holding Alex Cunningham’s phone (upon Alex’s request) while it “bumped” music that would definitely not emanate from our CD players (of course, neither Terry nor I can store music on our not-smart phones).

Anyway, the first foray to New Paltz – the first of MANY – was a success. Everyone seems to have done their homework and hit the track running with a solid first workout. We will venture back over there today with the distance crew, and then back again on Wednesday with the sprinters. This will be our general routine: Monday/Wednesday, sprint crew at the floating track; Tuesday, distance/mid distance runners. We will be burning a groove into that Mid-Hudson Bridge – but let’s not forget to get the bridge toll receipts!
