Penn Relays: 100-meter final

Glenmour Leonard-Osbourne placed sixth out of nine finalists in the college men's 100-meter championship on Saturday afternoon in Penn Relays, equaling his previous school-record mark of 10.39 seconds. In Friday's qualifying heats, he had run 10.36 seconds, which is now the current record. Coach Chuck watched the race from the infield, saying that Glen had a very strong first 75 meters before tightening up over the last 25 meters in the national-caliber field that featured sprinters from the University of Indiana, Houston, Ohio State, Arkansas and Clemson. We are proud of Glen's efforts and we look forward to the remainder of the championship season in the coming weeks.

Penn Relays: Huge racewalk news!

Here’s what was written up (by me) for GoredFoxes.com … huge racewalk news from Penn Relays this morning, further validating Coach Chuck Williams as the creator and curator of a national-caliber racewalk tradition here at Marist!

PHILADELPHIA -- Freshman racewalker Marissa Sciotto zoomed to a personal-best time by more than two minutes, in the process qualifying for the USATF U20 National Championships in June in Oregon, after her stellar performance early Saturday morning at the Penn Relays.

Competing in the Olympic Development 5,000-meter racewalk elite, which started at 8 a.m., Sciotto placed 12th overall, covering the 12.5-laps, 3.1-mile race in 26:25.83. This time easily exceeds the USATF U20 championship standard of 28:30. Those championships will be held at historic Hayward Field at the University of Oregon from June 23-25.

“So unbelievably proud of Marissa with her breakthrough performance at Penn Relays today,’’ Marist women’s head coach Chuck Williams said. “She has been training so well on her own and to open the season with a monster personal best validates all of the hard work she has been putting in! She becomes the latest in the long tradition of Red Foxes to qualify for the USATF Under 20 National Championships. Now we focus on training for that opportunity at famed Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.”

In the same race, two former Marist racewalkers also notched personal-best times. Katie Miale, now representing New England Walkers, was seventh overall in 24:43.80. Kayla Shapiro, now representing Walk USA, was 11th in 26:22.90. Both Miale and Shapiro – along with Lauren Harris – participated in the US Olympic Trials in the 20km racewalk last summer.

Penn Relays: Results so far

We’re very excited to report that sprinter Glenmour Leonard-Osbourne has qualified for the final of the 100-meter dash at Penn Relays. In this afternoon’s opening round heats, Glen ran a school-record time of 10.36 seconds. This time was the third-fastest of the 29 competitors in the field. The top 9 make finals. So … Glen is IN! We’re very thrilled at this development. It is highly neat!

Also on Saturday! Freshman racewalker Marissa Sciotto will be starting off the day with the 5,000-meter racewalk at Franklin Field. Then, later in the day, at 2:26p, Glen will be in the 100 dash final.

On Thursday night, distance runner Ramsey Little had a tough one out there at Penn in the 5km. He just couldn’t get into a rhythm and seemed out of sync the whole race, placing 60th in the race in a subpar (for him) time of 14:42.44. Ramsey has had a strong several months of track racing in 2022 and this is a bummer of a result. Here’s hoping he can bounce back during championship season in the coming weeks.

Fox Tracks: Episode 2

The second episode of our nascent podcast on the history of Marist track and cross country -- Fox Tracks -- dropped last week. For those of you who haven't given it a listen, here's the link to this episode.

We have a busy few days ahead, with some of our athletes competing at Penn Relays on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and then a larger swath of the team racing at Yale on Sunday. OK!

Happy Easter from the runnin' bunnies

Got this text from Kutchy this morning. There was no practice but that didn't stop these Running Red (Foxes) Bunnies (Pech, Sween, Steven, Kutch) from getting in their long run on a surprisingly chilly day. It was even SNOWING briefly this afternoon. Happy Easter.

Bucknell Bison: Men's results

The weather turned nasty for most of Saturday and what was gratifying is despite that, our two men's relays brought the fire at the end of the long day -- 4x800 wins, 4x400 runs fastest outdoor time in many, many years. Roman Katona had a stellar debut at 100 meters too. Overall, and up-and-down weekend at Bucknell, but it was great to be back. In any weather!

Bryan Clay Invitational: 5km results -- Ramsey's school record!

Two great races last night out in Azusa Pacific! Ramsey Little broke the 11-year-old outdoor school record in the 5,000 with his stellar performance in the fast heat, running 14:15.17. This time is about one second off his all-time school record, set last month at the IC4A indoor championships. He breaks Will Griffin’s 2011 mark of 14:31.91, a record that lasted a remarkably long time! Although we don’t have splits, from what the guys who watched the race live said, he rolled very even 1km splits in the 2:50/2:51 range, toughing it out on a night when he admittedly wasn’t feeling his best. Awesome stuff! Similarly, Tori Mariano notched a PR time in the women’s 5km, running 17:33.22 and basically matching the time she ran two weeks ago at Colonial Relays (she was 0.21 faster out in California). Like Ramsey, she hadn’t been feeling 100 percent in the leadup to the race; any PR is great, and she’ll take it as another excellent building block. We are on our way to Bucknell now; internet on the bus is spotty, so we’ll update the blog as we can tonight and tomorrow.

Bryan Clay Invitational: 10km results

What a great series of texts to wake up to! Just a few hours prior to my usual early-rising time, Coach Chuck texted me the results, splits and photos from last night (early this morning, East Coast time!) at the Bryan Clay Invitational out in California, where several of our athletes are racing this week. Last night, it was graduate student Hayley Collins in the 10km, where she notched a personal-best time and ECAC qualifier, and also Marist Running Alum Spencer Johnson, now racing for the San Diego Track Club, also notching a PR time on the track. Spencer texted a bit later (earlier?) with this race report: “Race went very well! New PR – fell asleep a bit the last mile/mile and a half but it was extremely helpful having Chuck out there yelling splits, haven’t had that since college and it really helped me stay on pace as best I could.” Highly neat! We hope for similar positive splits from late-night West Coast races in the coming days.

Empty nest

So. This is what it’s gonna be like! If my wife Heidi and I are lucky enough to make it to retirement (or something resembling that) in many, many years, THIS might be a slight glimpse into the future. What’s this? An empty nest! An eerie quiet has descended upon our humble Hyde Park homestead. Oh, there’s still noise in these parts: The rumbling barks of three easily agitated dogs (they are a conveniently free home security system, and they show off their falsely dangerous barking alarms when the Amazon truck or oil delivery guy or mail truck or any sort of movement in the yard occurs!) and the constant whirring of the three pumps futilely trying to keep our basement dry (if we get more rain this week, I will strongly dislike). But other than that? Not a lot of human activity here. Our three kids are out of the house. At least for a few days. Joey is in full-grown adult mode, out in the suburbs of Pittsburgh in the Air Force; Natalie continues her sophomore year at Siena College; and James, our constant presence since birth? He’s down in Myrtle Beach for the week with his FDR High School baseball team for their every-other-year spring trip, the first one in a while (obviously). So? It’s just the two of us. It’s weirdly nice. Should we feel guilty about this? I can only speak for myself when I say … NO. We love our kids, and this is nice at the same time. We cherish the rare moments when they are all home, and this is nice at the same time. We are proud of all that they have done, that they are doing and that they hopefully will continue to do, and this is nice at the same time.

Thoughts of retirement creep into the brain a bit more these days – I mean, I turn 58 later this year, so while that’s understandable, it’s likely still a murky vision in the distant future – and a quiet house is a strong possibility at that time. And oh yeah: This is NOT what retirement is like because we’re both still, uh, WORKING -- a lot, these days, by the way (this is a good thing!). But here at home, the pantry shelves are staying stocked a little longer. There is far less garbage to throw out and far less laundry piling up in the hallways and bathrooms. There are no construction- or baseball-themed YouTube videos (James’ favorites) playing on the big screen downstairs in the living room. There’s less competition for hot water at morning shower time. The dogs are still eating and barking and sleeping. I’m still swilling my coffee. Heidi’s still scanning antiques online and on social media. All’s quiet and tranquil here at the dead-end swamp. Did I mention? This empty nest thing is not so bad at all. I should also mention? It’s short-lived: Natalie comes home for an extended Easter break on Wednesday night. For now, for the next two days when we’re home, we’ll soak in the sounds of silence.

Met championships: Men's results

We only had a few athletes traveling down to Icahn Stadium in vans on Saturday morning and afternoon, but we made the most of the events we were in, scoring in every event. Sprinter Glenmour Leonard-Osbourne once again led the way with a school-record time in the 100 dash (10.39), a win in the 200 and a leg of the 4x100 relay. Including the 100 prelims, Glen raced four times! Our 5km guys completed a nice double (all of them raced the 1,500 on Friday night at Vassar), with all of them notching personal-best times. Up next = Bucknell, next Friday night and Saturday.

Vassar meet: Home cookin'

Great weather and good vibes were in abundance on Friday afternoon/evening at Vassar's April Invitational. The Vassar track is our home away from home. Actually. I say that all the time and probably should correct it. The Vassar track IS our home. It's where we practice almost every day. And although it's not on our campus, it is where we do our work. So to have a meet at the Vassar track is quite neat. Lots of family members, alumni and even local running friends were in attendance to watch our women and men compete. This was a good meet! Vassar has an outstanding team, a top-flight D3 program. While we didn't run our entire squad, the women and men who raced got some great competition out there, as well as some solid early/mid-season marks. It was really nice not to have to board a bus for a long ride home after the 4x400 relays were over. Instead, we got to hang around, no rush, with only a 10-minute commute back to campus awaiting us. Here's hoping our good friends at Vassar will continue to host this meet. Because if they do, we'll be there!
