Penn Relays: Racewalkers shine

Our program’s day started early at Franklin Field with the racewalk events at 8 a.m. It was well worth the early wakeup call for our walkers and for Coach Chuck, as Kristi Licursi notched a personal-best time and Katie Miale punched her ticket to USATF Juniors in June. We are proud to have these ladies representing Marist at the Penn Relays racewalk. Nicely done!

Penn Relays: 4x800 relays

Our 4x800 relays didn’t go as well as planned, but it was a great experience for our relay teams – both of which featured three freshmen each. Drew Burns’ leg was the highlight of the late afternoon. And for all of them, you cannot beat the thrill of racing in front of nearly 40,000 fans packed into Franklin Field.

Penn Relays: Stefan Morton breaks 15:00 for 5km

Stefan Morton became the 24th runner in track school history to break 15 minutes for 5,000 meters. He did it in tough, bruising fashion at Penn. He was in the second section, which was probably too fast for him. He hung tough and made moves early when he had to. After a relatively slow 74-second lap, he responded by lowering the pace and passing a few runners, and then he hung on with a solid last 800 meters in order to dip under the mark with a 14:58.19. Congrats to Stefan for joining this elite club. The updated list is below, and the splits below were taken from the finish line of the race.

Penn Relays: Men's 10,000-meter run

Spencer Johnson notched a painful PR and Dietrich Mosel had a tough return to racing, as the two men carried on a long tradition of Marist runners in the 10,000-meter run late at night at Penn Relays. Spencer was on pace for a monster PR before a stomach cramp slowed him down considerably during the second half of the race. He was able to battle through it and earn a two-second PR and another IC4A qualifier, but he was upset at not being able to run a sub-31:00 and a much bigger PR. Dietrich has battled a foot injury since mid-March and this was his first race back. I believe he is in better shape than this, but the fast early pace was too much for him to handle. After what has been a great sophomore year for Dietrich, this was a bummer of a race. We’re hoping for a strong, bounce-back effort at the MAAC meet next week.

Penn Relays: Women's distance races

Our two women’s distance runners had solid performances on Thursday night Nicki Nesi, who is redshirting this outdoor season, improved on her time from Bucknell two weeks ago (10:57.79), raced well by moving through the field and finished in 10:51.58. Kristen Traub battled through a lot of traffic, made strong and powerful moves throughout the race and finished in 9:57.00. Neither time is a PR, but the effort was great on a cold and damp evening at Franklin Field. Note that my splits here were taken from the finish line.

Penn Relays: Women's 4x400 relay

Even in the best of circumstances, the relays at Penn Relays are challenging for relay participants. You are huddled in the pre-race corral for a long time, then herded onto the track to race with little or no warmup. On Thursday evening, the women’s 4x400 had to endure not only that but also cold and rainy conditions. Considering those circumstances, their effort in heat 7 was admirable – with a strong, third-place finish. We are proud of them all, with a special nod to anchor leg Debbie Boerke, who did double duty on the day after her strong 400 hurdles race in the morning.

Penn Relays: Debbie Boerke in 400 hurdles

Thanks to Molly Weeks for sending me this awesome photo of freshman Debbie Boerke at Penn Relays this morning. Debbie did great, placing a close second in section 6 of the event. She was 21st out of 52 competitors in the event, in a time of 1:02.06 -- just a little slower than her school record from Bucknell a few weeks ago. Debbie will return later this afternoon in the 4x400 relay with her teammates. Nicely done, Debbie!

Penn Relays: Marist lineup

The phone rang promptly at 6:58 p.m., and it was Coach Terry Horton on the line. Based on the time of the call, I knew it was either very good news or not great news, regarding the Penn Relays packet pickup, which concluded at 7 p.m. It was good news! Terry got to packet pickup just in time, battling Philly rush hour traffic and making the deadline. Packet pickup for track meets is by no means a glamorous job, but for Penn it is extremely important. It is literally your ticket into Franklin Field. So we can rest easy knowing that one of most important tasks of the long weekend has been completed. We have a large and diverse group of athletes competing at Penn Relays, starting bright and early Thursday with Debbie Boerke in the 400 hurdles. The rest of the lineup is listed below (relay lineups are tentative). I will update things here at Blog Central as I can, and we will have Coach Chuck manning the Twitter feed as well.

Alumni race report: Fitz and Schab at Big Sur

Marist Running was well represented at Sunday’s Big Sur International Marathon in California. Ryan Fitzsimons (Central Park TC) placed eighth overall and third in his age group in 2:47:09 (6:22 pace). Strong winds slowed the times down, as Fitz noted the leaders were more than 10 minutes off their usual paces. Fitz reported via text: “I felt very strong and in control for the first 15 then the wheels started to come off. Fought some really bad leg cramps from mile 22 onward, which was frustrating.’’ Still, he is in great shape and the top finish proved that. Mike Schab followed up his Boston Marathon (3:10:13) on Monday with a nearly identical time six days later: 3:10:04 (7:15 pace) at Big Sur, good for 36th overall and 10th in his age group. Reported Schab via text: “Was a very scenic course with plenty of hills and wind. Took it out slower than Monday (1:33:15); may not look that way but with first 5 miles downhill.” He then excused himself from our text talk for a trip to the aquarium and followed by post-race beverages.

Alumni race report: Katie Messina's strong 10k in MA

Marist Running Alum Katie Messina posted a strong road 10km on Sunday at the James Joyce Ramble in Dedham, Mass. She was third out of 232 in the women’s 20-39 division in 36:29 (5:53 pace). Katie reported that she ran a negative-split race and was passing runners throughout the second 5km. She also reported that, in honor of Joyce, there were “people in costume reading James Joyce literature on the course.” How cool is that? In honor of rambling and James Joyce, here is a quote from him: “I am tomorrow, or some future day, what I establish today. I am today what I established yesterday or some previous day.”

Alumni race report: Louis Caporale at Sybil

Congrats to Marist Running Alum Louis Caporale for his excellent finish at the Sybil Ludington 50-kilometer run in his old stomping grounds of Carmel on Saturday. Louis lives in Stormville, where the big and hilly one-loop course goes through; I ran Sybil twice during the mid-1990s and it remains among my favorite races of them all. Louis finished fourth overall in 4:07:28 (7:57 pace). Not bad for a sleep-deprived 40-year-old with young children. Nicely done, Louis!

Boston Marathon: More alum results

Thanks to alert alums and blog followers for letting me know of the following additions to the Marist Alumni contingent at the Boston Marathon:

--Sarah Domermuth with a really strong debut performance of 3:23:54 (1:40:31 first half). She is pictured here having a blast along the course. Several Facebook photos show her thoroughly enjoying her first Boston.

--Todd Bivona, former sprinter turned long distance runner, clocking in with a personal-best 3:47:00 (1:56:14 first half). Todd has really taken to the half marathon and full marathon distances, and we are proud of him and Sarah.

Boston Marathon: Warm and windy

From various reports from friends and others I know who were running the Boston Marathon today, the conditions were less than optimal. The warm temperatures and bright sunshine may be a welcome feeling after the colder than normal start to spring, but it doesn’t do marathoners any favors. Add to that a strong headwind on the point-to-point Hopkinton to Boston course, and that made for a challenging day for most runners. The elite runners’ finishing times reflected this.

Among Marist alums, here are some results I could cobble together (more are welcome). Chris “Chomps” McCloskey, 2:54:40; Mike Schab, 3:10:13; Sean Hopkins, 3:50:09; Rick Hankey, 4:15:51. We continue to be amazed, impressed and proud of Chomps, the former middle distance star (he held several mid distance school records) who was never a fan of the endurance events. Now, he is an Ironman triathlete and a pretty darn good marathoner. And we are always thrilled to see Schab and Hopkins knock off yet another marathon to their ever-growing list (especially Schabby, who runs a lot of them). Rick was a teammate of mine back in the 1980s. He left the sport for a long time, but it's gratifying to see him back at it; this was his second finish at Boston, both times raising money for charity in the process. Thanks to Mike G for this photo of Schab, Mike G and his appropriately named son Miles (sleeping), Hopkins (with G’s daughter Lucy’s sunglasses) and Hopkins’ girlfriend Kate. Lucy was busy running around on the playground. The mid-race photo of Chomps was poached from his Facebook page.

A few other shout-outs to those in the Marist Running orbit:
--Mary Christian (mom of sophomore distance runner Mariah Christian) ran an amazing 3:20:38 and finished an elite level 16th place in her age group. Her first 13.1 miles were in 1:37:44, which means her pace over the final 13.1 barely faded despite the Hills of Newton and the relentless conditions. She is our hero, and a great role model for Mariah and for all of our runners who can see through her amazing race efforts that running is indeed a lifetime sport. Nicely done!
--Speaking of great pacing: Siobhan Dwyer, a Spackenkill High School alum who ran for Marist Running Legend Mr. Bucket (“David Swift”), ran a rare and extremely impressive negative split race at Boston. Her finishing time was 3:33:53, with 13.1-mile splits of 1:49:32/1:44:21 (if I did the math correctly). We remember practicing at Spackenkill (back when we used to do that) while Siobhan was a Spackenkill Spartan running for Swift, and then we saw her career continue to soar while running and racing at Iona College (yeah, THEM). This was a truly amazing race under any conditions, no less the challenging ones of today. OK!
--Finally, in the “friendly rivals” category, a quick shout-out to our western New York pal and coaching colleague Nate Huckle, who has done such a good job in reviving the track/cross country program at MAAC rival Canisius College. Nate finished in 3:06:03, easily requalifying for Boston (that was his goal) on the tough day. For Nate to continue to train at a high enough level to run this time – and for him to actually run this time during the busiest stretch of the coaching calendar on so many levels – is an amazing feat. He was darting all over the Northeast over the weekend, traveling from Buffalo to Lewisburg, Pa., coaching his team on the first day of competition at Bucknell, and then getting to Boston in time to race and race well.

Bucknell Bison Classic: Another record for Debbie Boerke

Freshman Debbie Boerke broke her own 400-meter hurdle record with a time of 1:01.70 on Sunday afternoon at Bucknell. Here is an awesome shot of Debbie in action, sent from her teammate and friend Molly Weeks. We just arrived home from a long and sunny weekend. I was driving the van (with excellent assistance from Cuesta) so I was not able to type up the results and splits from Sunday's events. I will do my best to post them at some point on Monday. Overall, it was an outstanding and productive weekend in the sun at Lewisburg.

Bucknell Bison Classic: Elizabeth Wasserman qualifies for ECAC in the 10,000-meter run

Congratulations to junior Elizabeth Wasserman on a tremendous effort in the Invite 10km under the lights. She exceeded the ECAC qualifying mark by more than 45 seconds and ran a superb effort from start to finish. Her 5km split was close to a personal-best time and she hung tough over the second half of the race. Nicely done, Elizabeth!

Bucknell Bison Classic: It was hot, then it was not

The weather was delightfully mixed on Saturday at Christy Mathewson Memorial Stadium at Bucknell University, one of our favorite meets of the year. The sunshine and warmth were welcome in the afternoon -- except by the roasted runners in the unseeded sections of the 10,000-meter run. When the sun went down, it cooled off quickly and considerably, but made for ideal conditions for the evening distance races under the lights. As is often the case, it was an excellent evening for our program -- especially on the women's side. I will post results, highlights and splits soon.

Feel the Bern

I took this photo on Monday night, when they were setting up for the rally ...
A few reflections on the morning after the remarkable Bernie Sanders Rally at Marist’s McCann Arena …

As I was watching this event unfold during the live stream on my laptop (No. I did not attend. I have an aversion to big crowds, especially in the building in which I work. I didn’t even attend many basketball games this year!), my youngest son James heard and saw what I was watching and got all excited. “Is that Bernie Sanders? I LIKE him. I want HIM to be president!” This, of course, stunned me. A 10-year-old knows Bernie Sanders? And he LIKES him? We rarely if ever talk politics at home, and I know for certain that Uncle Bernie has never come up in dinner conversation. Of course, I had to probe further. Why does James like Bernie Sanders? Here’s why. “Old men are smarter because they know more because they’ve lived longer. And besides, he must be rich because he’s so old.” Fascinating logic. And then he went back to watching the Mets game.

I stayed glued to my laptop, mesmerized by this grumpy, hunched back AARP guy on stage. I will admit to not taking Bernie Sanders too seriously. Politically, he digs in firmly with both feet in the left-handers’ batter’s box. Expand Social Security! Whaaaaaaaaat! Expand Obamacare! Whaaaaaaaaat! Free college tuition. Whaaaaaaaaat! Expand the minimum wage! Whaaaaaaaaat! All noble ideas. But! Who PAYS for all this? So yeah, I really haven’t paid too much attention, mostly because I figured with his needle pointed so far to the left, the old dude had no chance. But as I listened to this old man, I started taking him more seriously. He invoked FDR, a lot; FDR’s social programs were revolutionary, their impacts still felt today. He spoke with a passion and a conviction that was noticeable (although, to be fair, so does Ted Cruz … but I’m not going there …) But mostly, I was fascinated by this guy because he is so different than Cruz, Clinton (both of them), Rubio, Trump (oh gosh … HIM), etc. I don’t think he smiled once. He made one glancing reference to a poll. He didn’t even appeal for people to vote for him. He seemed annoyed at times when the crowd cheered him. Hey! Grandpa! It was a RALLY! For YOU!

Toward the end of the rally, the old guy spoke of love vs. hate – an indirect jab at that Trump guy. Speaking of which! Guess who’s gonna be in town on Sunday, at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center? Well, sorry, Donald, we’ll be 198 miles away running in circles at Bucknell. Anyway, to sum up the Sanders visit to Poughkeepsie, clearly the guy has a message, and he firmly believes in the message. And he delivered it, with passion, mostly free of the annoying traits of most politicians, at our college. Whether you agree with him or not, that’s pretty neat.
